Let's Sperg Marathon 2025 - Bungie's new AAAA Extraction shooter

It seems like modern games have rejected the 360 era of brown and brawn to now become gay rainbow barf with androgynous twinks robots or women*

*may not actually be legally considered a woman in the UK or US
The characters look like troons, androgynous, visually unappealing, flat. There is no grit, the art style is completely infantilized to the point Fortnite feels like its for adults. Its going to go the way of the Concord and I hope that they suffer for it.
Agree 100%

This shot with the s'pht looks like a level from the OG Marathon I pretty sure, they will probably just shove random Marathon levels and call it a day.
I dont know how I feel about that, a remake would be good, but going through a match just to get to the level sounds stupid.
Speaking of original marathon levels, it would be cool as hell if someone made an extraction shooter with non-euclidean level design like OG marathon sometimes had. Im specifically referring to the physically impossible layout of some of the maps.

One slop YouTuber mentioned a 400 million dollar budget, which I find hard to believe.
Come on man, that's what Concord was, and you really don't think Bungie is capable of blowing at least that?
There's a huge difference between wanting Appleseed, GITS, Genocyber, and Tank Polce, and recreating hotline miami via that one wallpaper every hack YouTuber uses as a title card.
Man, I legit love Appleseed's art style, its like GitS but in a post-cyberpunk optimistic setting that actually works for people (well, mostly...) instead of being the dehumanizing hellscape known as Japan.

On a second thought the garish overloaded design of the characters is most likely just to sell more skins to dumb kids who care about that. Every bit of retarded crap you see on them is gonna cost you money, want that auto-cloak thing? $200 buckaroos.
I forget where I read it (might be this thread) it's one game mode with 4 maps and around 6 classes? I forget, but it's a shockingly low amount of content for a full price AAA game.
So literally nothing, unless they add a campaign.

After concord and hyenas its almost a standard budget.

Crazy times.
wasn't cars driving into a wireframe sunset with a VHS filter.
That would still be better than whatever this is.

Speaking of that just what's the name for this style of bold letters with no fade-in/fade-out almost filling the screen? a bunch of movies are doing it too.
Im specifically referring to the physically impossible layout of some of the maps.
Which ones?

Never understood why they made it for mac. For the zoomers here macs were fuggin' dead in the 90's, a dead platform, if you had a mac back then you got the shit kicked out of you at school. And yet Bungie made the game for mac and didn't port it to PC until I-shit-you-not 2024. The sequel did get launched on windows, probably because if not Bungie was gonna go broke, but infinity was mac only again in 1997 when apple just almost went bankrupt, and after that Bungie started Halo on the mac too!.
Alex Seropian who started Bungie just happened to have a Mac, and built the early company selling shareware shit since that was uncommon on the platform.

Honestly, being on Mac probably sustained Marathon more than any other factor, since it was essentially the only Doom clone on the platform, and a good one at that. The Windows release of M2 was a failure since, as much as I love it, Marathon 2 is a hard sell to PC gamers in 1996. It's a great game, but tech-wise it pales even compared to Build Engine games like Duke3D, let alone fucking Quake.

Bungie was essentially the only major Mac developer, so they reaped the benefits of having no serious competition, rather than trying to compete in fever pitch that was PC gaming after id. They lucked out hard with the Microsoft acquistion and especially being an Xbox launch title, no doubt about that.

Marathon so far doesn't do anything genre defining to justify the price tag.
Brace yourselves for the influx of 'BUT HELLDIVERS 2' copers. I've not played Helldivers 2, but I can tell just looking at it it's probably an experience I wouldn't get in another game --not since the Lost Planet IP got abandoned any way-- although I'm still not paying 40 bucks for a live service.

Aside from liking some of the robot designs, I've seen nothing in Marathon that makes me want to even try it, never mind pay for the privilege.

BTW I just found out the art director for this game is Joseph Cross, the same art director for the turd that was the GITS live-action movie.

Fucker took the landscape of the original and ruined it adding icons and other random bullshit because oversaturated crap on screen=futuristic or something.

I understand your skepticism, but as a former Destiny player, this is Bungie. I'd even go as far as saying that's a conservative estimate. This is the studio that found it hard to create one area map per year the size of the average Battlefield 1 map, full of basically recycled content, with minimal story, and sold it for full price with premium versions for $100 to a captive audience. With a full microtransaction shop and season passes printing money. And that captive audience was large, filled to the brim with living embodiments of the sunk cost fallacy (mea culpa).

Yet, after a year of going at it alone they were so on track for bankruptcy that they started desperately looking for a buyout. After loudly celebrating that they had freed themselves from the shackles of oppression for the second time.

I thought Concord was in development for much longer than Marathon was, which would make sense why so much money fell into it.

You miss Lost Planet too, huh?

This explains so much, because my favourite robot design reminds me of that one robot geisha that appears right at the start then nothing as cool happens ever again.

I didn't hate live-action GITS as much as everyone else, main issues for me were the terrible CGI and the fact they cast Michael Wincott then had him die immediately.
You miss Lost Planet too, huh?
So much. I'm a sucker for glowing weak points and giant bugs, and even though I thought 2 mostly sucked the boss fights were incredible.

I, like many others itt, quite enjoyed the reveal trailer for this game. Even if it was hard carried by the Justice song featured in it. Justice rules. Gonna leave the song here in case anyone wants to jam out to it. EDIT: This is the original, which is an instrumental. The marathon trailer uses a remix that has added vocals. I like this version better but ymmv

This is the specific version used in the trailer:
Yeah, that's true. It has the cool glitchy sounding part in it. I just personally don't care for the added vocals, but tbf Heavy Metal would be a hard song to come up with vocals for so the remix singer guy did about as good as one could hope. But I feel like there's a reason they didn't include the vocals in the trailer

Helldivers is nothing like an Extraction shooter, Marathon will probably be more akin to Tarkov or CoD DMZ, what upsets me the most is that they basically dumped Destiny for a fucking Extraction Shooter of all things, if it were just a normal FPS everyone would have been happy but no these faggot developers insist on this weird one-life shit like with Battle Royale games, you could have easily made a Halo and CoD competitor and if you played your cards right you would still have a happy playerbase in Marathon and Destiny 2, I don't see why Bungie thinks its going to make them money

Helldivers is nothing like an Extraction shooter,
I'm not saying it is, but it's the example people always give to justify charging money for a live service game while conveniently ignoring all the other games that did the same and flopped completely.

If Marathon has to exist at all it should have been a $20 expansion for Destiny 2 at most. Charging (estimated) $40 for one game mode and a handful of maps is insane.
