Mafia

I’m very interested to see what kind of weapons we’ll have since it’s set before WW1.
Early Semi Automatic pistols like the Mauser C96 and Borschardt C93 will definitely be present as well as some revolvers.
Bolt action rifles probably as well.

Somehow, I only just learned of the new Mafia game being announced, and I decided to read this entire thread.

I remember playing the original Mafia as a child, so young, in fact, that the person in the games shop (when those still mattered) warned me that I might not properly grasp or understand the game. It was not long after I had bought the original The Godfather game. I think I actually did get a pretty good understanding of the game, though and it left a lot of memories somehow. I remember Sam being my favourite character, for some reason.

I played the remake 2/3 years ago and I never really realised how much it deviated from the original—since I hadn't played it in years—aside from knowing something wasn't quite right. I'm glad I now realise the full extent. The whole thing about his entire character being less of an average guy being dragged into something was something I really did feel, I think. The loss of its soundtrack was a big blow to the game, too. Watching the original Mafia's game director reacting to the remake was very eye-opening. Though I did enjoy the remake on its own, and found a lot of surprising satisfaction in learning how to drive the cars manually, that was also something you could do in the original.

Mafia 2 gets the more memorable rock music soundtrack that people will appreciate
Very old thing to reply to, but I laughed a bit. I remember being really sad after the entire 1940s sequence was over: I preferred the cars (getting to drive a 1940s car again with Galante was so welcome), the music and the general atmosphere so much. I loved that mission in which you return home from the war and you walk around the neighbourhood carrying your suitcase whilst people greet you; it felt so atmospheric and interesting.

I never bothered much with Mafia 3 as the politicisation of it really irked me. The most interesting thing I remember was feeding people to the alligator in the introduction mission. I thought the execution animations were quite cool so I kept trying to get into it, but the rest of the combat just feels so cheap and ugly and the missions are so boring (especially as I tend to do things in far too much of a perfectionist way, as others have pointed out you should not do in Mafia 3).

I remember Cassandra's introduction felt so fake and weird. It felt like they retconned her being that man's sex slave part-way through as it would be too much of a 'weak female stereotype' and actually made her the secret boss.

The underboss mechanic just feels inferior to The Godfather 2 in every way, which was not a perfect game to begin with and has probably aged very poorly. Though I actually don't think it looks much worse than the original Mafia 3 (I have never played the DE version).

Mafia: The Old Country's release date was accidentally released through a Steam blog to announce a PAX East reveal. August 8, 2025.

Gameplay is expected to be at the PAX East reveal.

Mafia: The Old Country has been rated by the ESRB.

Rating Summary

This is an action-adventure game in which players follow the story of Enzo Favara's ascension through a Mafia family in 1905 Sicily. Players engage in various criminal activities (e.g., extortion, theft, murder) at the behest of the Mafia. Some missions can involve using knives, pistols, rifles, shotguns, and explosives to kill enemy rivals and bandits. Combat is accompanied by realistic gunfire and cries of pain. Blood-splatter effects occur as enemies are killed; blood pools are depicted under bodies. Players can also employ stealth takedowns (e.g., throat slitting, stabbing from behind) to kill enemies discreetly. A handful of story sequences require players to execute characters at close range in order to progress. Cutscenes also depict intense acts of violence and/or gore: characters shot in the head; a man's throat slit at close range; a bound man in a chair beaten to death; a character's finger sliced off. The game contains some suggestive material: women escorting men inside a brothel; a man tied to a bed by two women inside the brothel; dialogue such as “I found them still in the whorehouse an hour ago” and “Give me…more vino and all the lovely boobies." During the course of the game, players' character can consume alcohol and drive while under the influence. The word “f**k” is heard in the game.

Driving while drunk at will is new. The last games I knew that did that was GTA IV and V. I know Playboys didn't exist back then in 1905, so I wonder if there will be suggestive paintings in lieu of Playboys for the player to collect. AFAIK, collecting gentleman's magazines is a Mafia tradition. Lastly, it also detailed "In-Game Purchases." I hope it's just pre-order bonuses like from Mafia III (which was later free for all players,) not microtransactions.

To me, that does not look like "gameplay footage." I would expect a HUD. Also, they said Unreal Engine 5 but the one handed gun combat looks like Mafia III's (and subsequently Mafia: Definitive Edition) animations.

If they're using UE5 then that explains also why the "gameplay" trailer is not recorded at 60 fps.

I'm guessing Unreal Engine 5 is too complex for 60 FPS with today's computers? Or is it a design choice? $50 for a linear game like Mafia: TOC isn't a bad ask. Of course, it'd help to be patient with sales.

It's bloated and they don't give a crap about optimizing their games anymore. They expect players to enable DLSS/FSR/XeSS and enjoy the blurry game.
It's mostly the lighting, ie ray-tracing, global illumination. 1-2 gens more and things will feel solid with easily affordable hardware.
Resolution scaling is a positive thing though, considering how much more hardware you need for when the action really starts going vs when you're just chilling and 'mirin.
I'm severely CPU limited with my current setup and Frame Gen actually makes the dips quite manageable.

I hope it's an 6-8 hour story with a free roam similar to the first Mafia. I understand not wanting it to be an open world like Mafia III tried. That said, it would be a treat to explore 1900s Sicily since they're painstakingly rendering it in Unreal Engine 5.

Mafia 1 remake is really good, even if there are a few things that I bitch about it (as I am a huge fan of the orginal).
get it, but be prepare to rage at the race level.
