I'll forgive his parents to a degree. They're only getting info from him, and he's demonstrated himself to be a somewhat less than reliable narrator of information. People are always going to reflexively say "My kid would NEVER do that!" its natural. Every parent is supposed to be protective of their kids.

I just wish they were also instinctively protective of their grandkids in a way that would genuinely shield them from harm or neglect or whatever might be going on in that house. However, given that they've got money and like to be active bigshots in charities and shit, I imagine they're probably also the kinds of people who would be protective of their reputations by downplaying everything bad.
