I actually agree with this.
That was a different situation. The explicit idea behind the Michigan State Group in 1955 was to give a little support now and not have to send a lot more support later on. If you want, I can go digging for the primary source documents this weekend. I have them laying around in digital form somewhere.
Of course, the problem became that the communists in Vietnam were not fucking around, followed by all the communists in the US media who ran defense for them in the 1960's. Eisenhower did not want to send troops to Vietnam and neither did JFK. LBJ and his camp were the ones who pushed for US military intervention in Vietnam.
Either way, my point is that Vietnam was a lot more complicated than "nothing happens, Bay of Pigs, WAR." It was a conflict that really began with the Haiphong Incident in November 1946 and the US was tangled up in it from that point on.
