I'm glad we're finally moving on from that, but I feel so bad for Aspinall. People will never see him as the goat because even if he reigns for ages to come, the rest of the heavyweight division just really, really fucking sucks. His wins will never seem that impressive because all he has left are bums, with the only guy left he hasn't beaten yet being Jon's leftovers.

I don't agree with this. Jones' legacy at light-heavyweight is secure. The title has changed hands repeatedly since he left the division. He fought three generations of fighters and never truly lost a fight.

Heavyweight is hard to call a legacy, Stipe was ancient and Gane was overhyped to hell. There was no reason for Jones to move to heavyweight and I think he burned most of his last years bulking up. By the time he moved up Ngannou was gone and HW turned into a wasteland.

There was no benefit in fighting Tom Aspinall. Before anyone was seriously talking up Tom as a threat, Ciryl Gane was the destroyer. The second Jones ragdolled him he was thrown away by fans as a fraud and Tom became the unstoppable destroyer overnight. It would have been the same result.

The UFC was very wrong to let Aspinall defend an interim title. If he had been interim long enough to warrant a defense, Jones should have been stripped of the belt. There is an active, defending champion at that point.

If you want to go by what the judges ruled as the end-all-be-all, sure, the judges gave that to Jones. Just as he earned a DQ loss for an illegal elbow against Hamill. So either way he's not undefeated

I've been watching UFC for like 15% of my life now and I'll always remember Jon Jones as the guy who fought twice and left.
