Sony hate thread

It's only a 4, thankfully. 5 has no games, so I never upgraded. I haven't seen anything about the 4 having this, so I may be safe if I ever hit my head and decide to try it with a capture card.

The only way I can record is getting a capture card and setting up OBS, and I'm not getting a gadget just to record a single game, even if I would enjoy it.
It's worth it anyway. Once you add video capture capabilities to your PC or laptop (they make good USB capture devices too) you'll realize how fun it is to 1) play games and other stuff through your PC display, 2) capture same, 3) record other random shit just because you can. Avermedia capture cards are pretty cheap; I think I paid about $120 for a PCI capture card with 4k HDMI support. Practically zero latency, very high capture quality. USB capture devices add a few milliseconds of lag but nothing bad.

and it's not a guaranty. The PS3 used to have some sort of DRM protection on the HDMI so if you plugged it to a capture card you would get no signal. I don't know if they still do that with the PS5.
It's HDCP. Pain in the ass. Fortunately there's cheap little gadgets called "HDMI splitters" that strip that shit right out so you can still use the stuff you buy the way you want to.

PS5 and PS4 have HDCP, but you can shut it off. Wish the PS3 got that ability.

I think the EVGA XR1 can bypass HDCP on its own, but anything Elgato related doesn't work iirc. Fun fact: the original Elgato Game Capture HD bypasses this not by bypassing HDCP, but by giving you a D-Terminal cable to play. Looks worse than HDMI, but outside of using Component cables or a splitter, it was the best that could be had.

Indeed. I remember having to buy a HDMI splitter because my Elgato couldn't get the signal.

Crash Bandicoot’s co-creator gave some insight into how the remake messed up jumping:
“In my opinion (key word, opinion!), the Crash Bandicoot remake got almost everything right. Except the most important 30 milliseconds.

When they remade Crash, they nailed the visuals. Looked great, faithful to the original, kept the spirit. Then they completely botched how jumping works.

On the original PlayStation, we only had digital buttons – pressed or not pressed. No analog sticks. Players needed different height jumps, but we only had binary input.

Most games used the amateur solution: detect button press, trigger fixed-height jump. Terrible for platforming.

So we built something borderline insane. The game would detect when you pressed jump, start the animation, then continuously measure how long you held the button. As Crash rose through the air, we’d subtly adjust gravity, duration, and force based on your input.

Let go early = smaller hop. Hold it down = maximum height. But it wasn’t binary – I interpreted your intent across those 30-60 milliseconds and translated it into analog control using digital inputs.

The remake developers either didn’t notice this system or thought it wasn’t important. They reverted to simple fixed jumps. Then realized Crash couldn’t make half the jumps in the game. Their solution was to make all jumps maximum height.

Now every jump on the remake is huge and floaty. Those precise little hops between platforms are awkward. The game’s fundamental jumping mechanic feels worse than the 1996 original despite running on hardware that’s 1000x more powerful.

The minutiae of timing and feel matter a lot more than people realize.”
Wow, jumping that changes based on how long you hold the button! Such a revolutionary concept, those Sony devs really knew how to innovate and stand out from the crowd. Unless you count, you know… EVERY SINGLE FUCKING MARIO GAME SINCE THE NES. This is Call of Duty “realistic fish AI” levels of bullshit.

While it's a bunch of pretentious verbal masturbation, it's even more telling that the remake couldn't even get THAT right.

Switch 2 sold 500,000 more units than the PS4.

The Sony cope? MK8 only sold well because people were buying bundles.
Bundles only sold well because of MK8.
Ps5 would have sold more if not for pandemic and supply constraints.

a switch 2 for casual and nintendo shit and a proper pc for gaming seems to be the way
I'm looking forward to Valve making a console, because they don't even need first party games, they just need to offer taking a smaller cut and Microsoft and Sony become third party overnight.

Imagine how quick the publishers will flock to Steam if they ask for a 15% cut, instead of a 30% cut like Sony, while offering full purchase sharing across console and PC.

>people only bought this console because it had a game they wanted to play
I accept your concession.

>people only bought this game because it was bundled with the console
Interesting theory, let’s keep it in mind while we look at Horizon and Spider Man sales…

It is all but confirmed that Valve is working on a set up box for the living room code named "Freemont" which obviously would be a continuation of the work they have done with the Deck and SteamOS. Main issue stopping their hardware from being more popular is that they only sell through their own store and hand picked Asia only retailers. A Steam Console is never going to replace a Playstation or Xbox unless Average Joe gamer can walk into their local GameStop, Best Buy, Target or Wallmart and see it in shelves.

Sony and Microsoft already sell their games through Steam so they already are third parties by that standard.

Imagine how quick the publishers will flock to Steam if they ask for a 15% cut, instead of a 30% cut like Sony, while offering full purchase sharing across console and PC.

30% is the industry standard, even so Steam offers special cuts for games that are top sellers. For games that sale between $10 - $50 million the cut goes down to 25%, and for games exceeding $50 million, the cut is of 20% I don't believe dropping below that percentage would happen.
Sometimes people forget the costs of maintaining an infrastructure that is necessary to keep Steam running and servicing tens of millions of players worldwide on a daily basis, plus funding all the secret projects that happen behind close doors. Also Papa Gaben needs his megayacht and a legal war chest to fend off the patent trolls and all other assorted parasites that try to extort money from Valve for any number of reasons.

Also remember that a Steam "console" is just a PC running a gaming focused operating system to make the experience as seamless as possible. So your purchase would be available across any devise that is able to run Steam (remember that the next Xbox is going to do just that.)

They should do a deal with Amazon.

ate me sloptimistic, but it wouldn't be the first time Steam went against the industry standard. Offering free online would help the average gamer pick up a Steamxbox.
Even better if Steam offer cheaper hardware than MS or Sony, especially as the PS6 has a rumoured price tier of $999 and $1499.

Proton runs games with lower overheads than kikerosoft windows, so they could probably save a few quid by lowering specs a little.

Whatever happens, I want to see Sony suffer for their arrogance and Xbox to piss off due to their incompetence.

The fact that mario kart, EXCLUDING bundled copies (and also digital), made it to 3rd place is more insane than people give credit.

Its ranked by dollar sales not units so its a bit of funny numbers due to Mario Kart World being an $80 game, but it's not really a surprise that the follow up of a game that sold 76million units would be a success.
