It's a little like Chris an Ricardo, he's had a fascination with safe latino culture since the latino pop craze of the late 90's an early 00's and he got his first stiffy to a picture of j-lo, for about 3 years any pop music that came out of America really pushed that angle and it got a young Phil a life-long obsession with being anyone or thing other than what he really is because he views it as really plane an boring.

Prety much.
About 2000 or there abouts, so he was about 15 he was a late bloomer.
Pretty much, Phil's whole life is a quest to escape his own reality he really hates himself because he views his own reality as dull but he's not developed mentally enough to go out there and make his life more interesting in realistic ways.

I'd got as far to say more so, Chris is into entertainment the more basic an non threatening the better, Phil an be lead by his nose ring towards any position if it comes off as edgy enough.

But just like delayed speech or mental development, delayed sexual development could very well be a symptom of an autism spectrum disorder.

Random thought:
I was thinking about this with the discussion of Phil's back pay and how he blew most of it on stupid tattoos and did not try to improve his life or transition in any way. I mean he could of got hair removal and try to take steps to appear more feminine, But he didn't...
He only made himself more manly then he was before, with tattoos that make Im look like a former prisoner.
How can you call yourself transgender with zero effort?
I mean the whole idea behind transitioning is to be perceived by society as the gender you see your self as internally. But it seems like Phil just latches onto this to try and seem edgy and "oppressed".
I don't think Phil truly understands the depression and body image issues that gender dysphoria can truly have on someone.
Come to think of it I think he is to dumb to even understand gender, and he just repeats things he has heard from other people and websites.
I think he is just trans because it is the cool trendy thing to be right now on tumblr, weather he understands it or not it does not matter to him.
He is a mockery and a "blackface" parody of the worst traits and stereotypes of all the identities and cultures he tries to assimilate himself into (including his transgender identity)
To me even if Phil just took his transition seriously and gave it all his effort I would take his transition more seriously, but he does not do anything....
I mean come on even Chris puts more effort in and passes better then Phil (now that says something)
But then again this is Phil and the only thing he has put effort into is destroying himself and his opportunities in life.

I think what it really comes down to is that Phil is deeply unhappy with his existence. Anyone would be in his situation - no job, isolated from his family, no true friends, a "partner" who secretly hates him, no academic achievements, none of the grounding that gives a person a feeling of satisfaction. He is neither needed nor respected by those around him. He has no self-reliance. I think he looks at other communities - troons, Latinos, gay men - and thinks they offer him an opportunity to be part of something in a way that being a white man doesn't. The troons also offer the tantalising opportunity to blame transphobia for the fact that no one likes him.
It's kind of sad really, being so lonely that you actually attempt to change who you are at the most base level just in the hope of getting someone to be your friend. You'd think it would be easier to just, you know, not be a dick to everyone, but this is Phil.
