By rights that rifle should have been in service today but noooooo Hanel decided to do some lawfare
I haven't spend that much time studying the subject, but AFAIK it went like this:

- H&K 433 and Haenel MK556 were the final two in the trials
- Haenel beats out 433 fair and square, their rifle was better than the 433
- H&K then sues Haenel for patent infringements, contract gets cancelled (another reason is Haenel's Saudi ties) and given to H&K with their 416.

433 simply wasn't desirable. Even when Haenel got thrown out, H&K offered the 416 which then got chosen.

Speaking of service rifles, Finland officially announced NATO standardization on small arms calibers earlier this week:

Conscript trials with new Sako made assault rifles going to begin next year:

Duality Arms Co. has officially started preorders for their FRT

....aaand the website broke immediately.

Price is $250, which seems like a lot but its a proper 3 position safety (as opposed to the goofy push-rod style) and its supposed to be an upgrade to the trigger on top of the FRT function so maybe its justified.

Looks like SIG SAAR is jumping on the 2011 bandwagon, introducing their own model that takes P320 magazines called (of course) the P211. I think I'll stay with my Staccato P.

ATF is doing away With CLEO Notifications
would love for them to get rid of the engraving requirements

The comp is really cool, it's printed out of metal and it's got like a weird blast chamber that feeds the side vents. I think it's a cool gun, but for the price I don't think I can justify it.
maybe if it came with the optic, I have one and it's pretty darn good.
Imagine buying a 2011 from a company who can't even make a plastic pistol that works.
imagine releasing this thing in the MIDDLE of all the 320 drama, it's embarrassing

Agreed.
I think they should drop it....

Now that it's fall going into winter, I'm thinking about weapon mounted lights on my full size guns for OWB carry.

I have a Shadow 2 and a Glock 45 as my full size guns. My Glock has a shitty first gen INFORCE APL weapon light with like, 200 lumens, but I have a nice JMCK OWB holster for that. It's bright enough.

I don't have a WML for my Shadow 2 or a proper OWB holster for it. I'm looking at a Vedder level 2 retention holster for that, but I'm wondering...

what's the point of a WML? Who is going to find themselves needing to shoot something in total darkness without any ambient lighting around? Modern night sights give you a sighting system you can see in low light. With the exception of maybe some Dennis Rader BTK shit where my own house becomes totally blacked out, I have a WML for my long guns.

Should I worry about WMLs for my carry guns? I don't think so.

It’s dark half the time, and I don’t presuppose the amount of light I will need. I’m running a Streamlight TLR7 HLX which is plenty powerful without sticking out past the end of the gun as much as an x300 or TLR 1. I’m running it in a Tenicor holster, and don’t even notice any difference in comfort compared to running without a light.

Eta: tritium night sights are just about useless. Only good for helping you find the gun in total darkness.

Maybe I'm just retarded but wouldn't this lead to the collapse of the registration system (that wouldn't be a bad thing) Unless pre-existing serial numbers were "converted" (that is, their new status as SBR's superseding their status as rifles)

Positive identification of the target.

Ambient light isn't always enough. I also take it you've never gone from being outside on a bright day to a dark room before.

Like a carry gun itself: it's better to have a WML and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I just don't want to buy new holsters and wait 11 weeks or whatever lead time they have. I have too many holsters already.

Sig has the brazen nuts to ask Staccato pricing for this? Lmao. I'm not scared of my C2 the way I'd be scared to have a modern day Sig handgun sitting on my dresser.

You don't have to engrave on a new serial number if your NFA item already has a preexisting manufacturer serial, i.e. the form 1 engraving on my AR lower includes my name and the city, state it was "made"(registered as an SBR) in. Idk exactly how the ATF works, but I imagine they use the pre-existing serial(form 1 has a box for it) for tracking/organization, along with your name/trust name.

If I had to chose one silly NFA quirk to get rid of it would be the requirement to notify the ATF when you intend to cross state lines with a SBR, SBS, or DD (silencers are exempt). Iirc you're supposed to update them with any change of address for NFA items but I don't think most people do that as is.

for things like SBRs You don't add a serial though, just your name/city/state.
It adds like 50$ to the build if you need to find a local engraver

The only time you have to add a serial number is when you're doing it to an 80% that doesn't have a pre-existing SN. Otherwise you can just repurpose the commercial SN in the paper work. You're don't have to duplicate the SN nor does it have to be continuous with the existing markings, you just have to add the manufacturer/trust and location somewhere "conspicuous" on the receiver. A few of mine have my Form 1 engravings positioned away from the serial number simply because I ran out of room.

If you don't want to pay for a professional engraver (I sometimes don't because its 50$ of labor cost and $20 of gas money) you can buy sheet metal lettering punches for 10-20$ online/harbor freight. The ATF requires that they be a minimum of 1/16" lettering height and a minimum .003" depth which is easily achieved by punches. They work well on aluminum like AR-15 receivers but they wear out fast on steel which is fine because [cost of punches < gunsmith fees] You just have to be careful with thin sheet metal receivers, you can easily dent AK/HK receivers unless you fit a supporting backer behind the SN area. Doing it with an electro pencil or Dremel bit looks fucking terrible so I prefer the punches.

If you're working with steel you also have the option of electro etching. This method looks a lot nicer than stamping (it can even duplicate complicated images provided you have access to the OG design vectors) but it requires complicated masking. Essentially, you use electricity and a corrosive agent to eat away the design. You mask off the areas you don't want etched and then run electricity through it after sprinkling chemicals on it. I send my mom files to use with her cricket cutter because it looks alot better than free handing with an exacto blade.

JPMachine on YT has a good tutorial for this
