I haven't spend that much time studying the subject, but AFAIK it went like this:By rights that rifle should have been in service today but noooooo Hanel decided to do some lawfare
- H&K 433 and Haenel MK556 were the final two in the trials
- Haenel beats out 433 fair and square, their rifle was better than the 433
- H&K then sues Haenel for patent infringements, contract gets cancelled (another reason is Haenel's Saudi ties) and given to H&K with their 416.
433 simply wasn't desirable. Even when Haenel got thrown out, H&K offered the 416 which then got chosen.
