I like the game because it manages to give me a feel for the more Infantry side of a war skirmish but I think the devs wanted to come across as more SOF than Run-Of-The-Mill Marine Infantry from this post. I expect them to keep tethering the line but it wouldn't really suprise me if they decided to jump the shark into full SOF and stop providing RMC and Colaition stuff. Either way I should probably just make a game myself with the shit I want instead of doing it vicariously thru the games I play.
I feel like the game is already in SOF territory because what was a routine mission turns into something unconventional due to the transport accident. That said, I would also be upset if they go full speshul fore sis. I think the variety of strategies possible in the game make it more fun than X-COM, which really only has one direction you can go with building a team. In MENACE, you can have one squad that's all tanked up and another that's light and mobile, and they both work together.
What I do wish is it was possible to get full Space Marines and steamroll the non-MENACE enemies at a certain point. You can sort of do that with the pirates and bugs, but the rogue army is kinda tough with all their firepower.
Although, it's an little bit less of an tactical RPG and more about upgrading your army so that they can unceremoniously kill off the final boss in the background
Instead of getting Mewgenics like everyone else I've been playing some old games no one remembers. Thought I'd post in the thread since they're both TRPGs.
Crystal Warriors - a very early example of the genre and it shows. The graphics are extremely basic and the plot is non existent. The gameplay does have some interesting elements. Instead of a weapon triangle you have elemental affinities and your non magic character can recruit monsters by defeating them. If you come up against an enemy with an element that is stronger than yours you can send out a monster instead to counter them. Its an interesting relic but I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless you are really interested in seeing an early attempt at the genre that isn't Fire Emblem.
Royal Stone - a Japan only sequel to Crystal Warriors which does have a fan translation. They are both GameGear games but the difference is nigh and day, Royal Stone feels like it could have been a console release at the time. The graphics are much better, there is now a plot (though still fairly basic) and the maps are a lot more interesting and varied. The gameplay still revolves around elemental affinities but you now have special moves to add another layer of strategy. The monster taming mechanic is unfortunately gone though now your main character can capture monsters which you can field as full units on their own instead of human characters. Would actually recommend this one. Its not particularly hard but is a nice comfy experience, perfect for getting a couple maps done on the couch after work or something.
I have my eyes on this. Played the first demo and liked it but the combat needs a lot more work and polish. That Round Table game looks autistic enough that it could be right up my alley, definitely gonna check that one out. Somehow reminds me of AETHERIS, a game i really did like (and actually bought for once) even though it was janky and unpolished as fuck.
If you're fine with members being temporarily downed for the duration of that combat/until you revive them, give Miasma Chronicles and Showgunners a try. They're linear games with preset characters though.

I say that Showgunners is a very good entry point for someone who's completely new to the genre and also doesn't want to deal with a game that's 20+ years old. Fun, not to deep mechanics that are easily learnable, serviceable story and writing, doesn't drag on and on needlessly. For my liking it was way too short but i still had fun with it. Miasma Chronicles on the other hand was disappointing to me, felt too much like a Mutant Year Zero reskin (which it basically is) and the characters and setting didn't click at all with me.
MENACE and Xenonauts 2 both look good, but I wish someone would make another game using the DoorKickers 2/Aliens Dark Descent pausable real time system but with more in depth characters.
MENACE seems like the one I'd get first, but not sure how its difficulty curve holds up. I'm perpetually mad Dark Descent never got a sequel that game is almost perfect.
I played a couple hours of Xenonauts 2 and it appears to be a fucking ass video game of dogshit, of a kind that sucks and which is bad.
MENACE is pretty dope but it ain't done yet anyway, wait for it to get outta EA.
About Xenonauts 2, after an certain point, you'll actually be charged an valuable resource for the privilege of raiding an crashed UFO if you don't fiddle with the campaign settings.
Yes it certainly does seem to be a game designed to appeal specifically to xcom smugposters, yet anything that makes xcom interesting or distinctive they didn't bother with. I don't think I've ever seen a game try so hard to be this fucking bland.
X1 was fine, we didn't have a lot of other options so a we-have-xcom-at-home option was appreciated. X2 seems to have the mission of saying "actually all the shitty boring stuff about the first game was on purpose" and doubles down, for some reason.
Maybe it pulls some major switcheroo when you hit the three month mark or something but I got fed up with UI issues and the fucking mobile game characters constantly talking at me and deleted it. I'd rather just play xcom than grey anti-fun xcom. I'm an actual true fan you see, I need to be able to spin my geoscapes.
It doesn't. The game actually tries to hamstring you as soon after the third or fourth month, since you can't get your missions if you don't have the money and points to build a new base from scratch.
Idk, Phoenix Point had a reasonably adequate compromise to it, but that's shit for a set of different reasons
