Warhammer 40k

I stopped paying attention after the initial reveal, so can anyone bring me up to speed on what happened with the female custodes ? Did GW succeed ? Or was the backlash and subsequent boycott of the product a success and GW had to bury it and pretend it never happened ?
They made minis, everyone moved on besides the grifters, because the box didn't have anything new in it. But the grifters wouldn't know that.

They took some hits, the models didn't sell out to the point they had to intentionally not ship them to stores to avoid having them sit on shelves, and various factions of the culture war cope and or sneeded in various ways. Another day ending in Y. GW stock seemed to wibble a bit, but not nearly as much (or as little) as the sneeders on both sides would have you believe.

Generally speaking, GW seems to be downplaying the fuck out of it all, and it's really looking like the "it was a rogue editor and they were stuck once it was done" thing was true given the timeframes (e.g., they made the "announcement" and didn't have any minis or even art ready). They didn't even hype it up on their website during the release window.

Half the book is Trazyn and Orikan yelling "Fuck you and I'll see you next decade!" and the other half is the other Necrons getting so pissed off at their constant backbiting they force them to work together as punishment.

And then the final part is Trazyn alternating between having a plan and yelling IT WAS JUST A PRANK BRO.
I have mentioned it before but the reworked Necrons are to me in the category of shit I think is perfectly fine in its own right but is so wildly out of whack with the 40k I started with it always feels markedly off to me even if I don't have any actual problem with it.

For cawntext the literal first White Dwarf magazine I acquired as a little baby infant child was the one in which they were introduced for the first time, and I even acquired a dozen of the old school metal spiky models during a subsequent excursion to the local Games Workshop. At the time they were literally just spooky OP evil robots which while not exactly deep was kinda neat for my literal 6 year old brain. Couple years later they got their full elaboration into a vaguely lovecraft scented super OP and super evil robots which to my tween sensibilities that were a little more comprehending of muh lore was also kinda neat, and as the years went by and they featured in shit like the novels and Dawn of War and became steadily wanked ever more as the RealTrue main bad guys of 40k this characterisation set in for me even if I was growing a little bored of how they were increasingly revealed to be behind everything and anything bad and spoopy in the setting.

Cut to a couple years later still, and I have moved on from the tabletop but still keep abreast of the general 40k shitpost sphere and such as it was the golden age of post soulstorm SPEEEESSS MEHREEEEEEEN memes, and in one of several trillion threads throwing shit at Matt Ward I find out that his latest narrative clusterfuck is randomly making the Necrons and Blood Angels team up against the tyranids and then give one another the bro-tug and part peacefully as homies. Many dismissed this as just another entry in his catalogue of bullshit writing, but a few speculated if there was some rework of the faction coming out to make them cuddlier and friendlier. Cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth the next year when this was confirmed to be happening...but then when it actually happened it turns out it was not the utter shitshow that had been expected and there were many who actually kinda liked the new direction given how the Necrons now had personalities and purpose beyond exterminating everything on orders of the NotChaos Gods. There was still plenty of dissent, some of it autistic in nature, but generally the Oldcrons role overlapped both the Tyranids and Chaos enough that this retcon into mostly evil Spess Tomb Kings was a surprisingly smooth one.

In the here and now this retcon has solidified itself and earned its place at the proverbial table and yet to me it still feels inherently fucking weird reading about the latest wacky hijinks of Trazyn and friends when my subconscious still holds on to the soulless lovecraftian nightmare robot image I formed of them back when I was way too fucking young to be reading late 90s White Dwarf articles of them skinning space nuns alive en masse, even if there is still plenty of in-universe room for Oldcron style grimdark.

I kind of get it from a vibes perspective, but at the same time have to disagree because the setting doesn't actually support that being the case.
  • Cadia destroyed, Iron Warriors now besieging the other systems and planets around the Eye of Terror.
  • Literally half the Imperium in the dark, essentially lost.
  • Terra itself very nearly had a civil war after Robute showed up because of the High Lords bickering and scheming.
  • The Golden Throne is failing with maybe 200 years left before its dead and the Emperor with it.
  • Parts of the Inquisition and AdMech positioning themselves against Robute and Cawl respectively, leading to more instability within the Imperium
  • Tyranids starting to eat the galaxy from every direction all at once.
So yeah the Imperium has two Primarchs back.. one of which has actually done anything, and despite his best efforts and amazing accomplishments the entire thing is still barely holding on by a thread which wants to eat itself.
I fully acknowledge this and agree that this is almost entirely a vibes perspective on my part. Honestly I think its probably like how some of the ultra crusty old niggas who were first introduced to the setting during the OG Rogue Trader era when shit was gloriously goofy and cheesy felt when it shifted to bleak ass and largely if enjoyably joyless grimdark in subsequent overhauls. Shit has moved on from the perpetual grimdark stagnation of Abaddon failing his 13th Black Crusade in 2003 and then everything just stalling for a decade, and while this was "my" era of 40k I am not so autistic to resent shit changing even if it feels downright surreal at times.

Besides, there are more than enough ACTUAL fucking complaints about retarded shit in currentyear 40k to focus on rather than bitching about the general feel of things.

I was actually looking at the figures on the site the other day, and it made me laugh how pointless the entire thing really is and was. At most there's some heads that kinda look female, maybe? They didn't get the SoS/SoB boob-plate so the only way to tell is the head. But the sculpts are ass to begin with. Hard to make something the size your pinky nail look like a woman when the rest of it is a blocky male body covered in genderless armor.

Seems the only lasting impact is that now you get random "she" and "her" thrown in when a Custodian shows up in a story.

It's not just the heads, the bodies are female too. They're slimmer with a hint of boobplate. The captain is explicitly a female only model.
You might not notice or care but it's there all the same.

There's a couple of torsos in the pile that don't look the same as the male torsos, but no it's not as blatant as sisters boob plate.

But yeah, it's custodes battleline that every custodes player already has a ton of(and doesn't even come in the right quantities so you'll have models left over). A tank, that they probably already bought 1-3 recasts of or just said fuck it and got prints because no one wanted to pay $200 for a FW tank that was usually out of stock anyway. Same for the dreadnought that was also $200 without the gear to actually swap between kits, again everyone who wanted to already got recasts or just printed the shit.

Can't even say there's a huge HH 3.0 audience for them either since they gutted that list of datasheets and HH 3.0 is already kind of a shit show as it is(I've seen more saturnine stuff used as conversions for 40k, than I've ever actually seen of HH 3.0 games). But yeah, product with an incredibly small audience other than people wanting to start custodes literally "right now".

Why didn't they just do more SOB or SOS shit instead of goofy retcon attempts that gain them basically nothing

You mean like make models for shit they already had datasheets for, that people had been wanting for years, instead of deleting them from the latest edition of the game?

GW make a sensible decision? come on. Hell, they actually did sisters of silence even dirtier more recently since previously custodes and sisters were "talons of the emperor" but the new custodes HH book is just liber custodes with nothing even in the sisters category on warhammer.com other than the dual wield pistol upgrade kit, one character, and one transport. They're not a playable or buyable army for HH at this point but some tranny wanted their 8' tall dommy mommy custodes and got them.

I agree with this. Most custodes players already have more than enough minis, plus there was uncertainty about the tank being nuked into legends, so a lot of 40k players tuned out. I knew there was a lot of intrest for the new venetarii kit or whatever though, but other than that the box seems to have struggled to sell at least compared to the individual releases of the kits, considering that GW didnt make a lot of them. Kek, my local GW store located in a major city still had a bunch like 2 weeks ago. From what I have seen, most people who bought the box either got it to paint, rather than actually play, so make of that what you will. The box seemed popular with troons though.

SHIEEET WE WUZ TECH PRIESTS N SHIEEEEEEET MUH NEEZY. WER DAH YT WAHMEN STL’S AT BOIYYYYYY?????
now im reminded of this one magos biologis admech from Day of Ascension who cut up and stitched human skin (presumably sourced from menial workers) because he thought human skin== better than plasteel or whatever. He just ended up looking like a patchwork of lose human skin all of different color and size crudely stitched together lol

Because SoB are too religious and have boob armor, and the sisters of silence are just an insanely niche side of custodes that being they are specifically the psyker branch of the custodians so pretty much are bitches regulated to psyker duty. Thats where this sister of silence argument boils down to even if they were expanded they were STILL a side piece to the main army of custodes

Its also becasue they werent the "faces" of these factions they want woman on the cover front and center they dont care about the already female factions and then add in total dark woke mindsets where they revel on destruction of settings white guys obsess over.

Minor nitpick, that does not look like a kiwi skull

Absolutely hollering at how every comment I see on the stronk black womyn mechanicus even on normie forums like youtube shorts is fucking "George Droyd"
GW made the most right wing setting ever...its just they have been trying to apologize for it without tanking their stock

I like how the nigress kept half of her face so that you can tell she's a nigress. And no voice modulator for the same reason. Likewise, the Necrons suddenly were unable to hit a static target like 1 meter away because hurting a niggress in media is an uber-sin in the Western world, hence why the Necs jobbed so hard. At least until the camera moved away, off-screen, it's something else.
Extra points due to being accompanied by a "normal" Mechanicus magos that had no human features.

I'm with you in that I also tardraged a bit at the NewCrons, mostly because at the time it was pretty bland and uninspired, and also it was everyone's favorite Spiritual Liege behind it with his usual top quality writing. Now that much better writers than he have flushed them out I fucking love them, because a bunch of grumpy old robots who can't and won't give up on their grudges that have outlasted entire suns, never mind civilizations, since that's the last bit of actual emotion and feeling they have left from before the biotransference process. Not only is it a perfect fit for some of 40k's grimdark tone when you think about the how and why involved in all of that, but it also leads to some general hilarity and weirdness that so desperately 40k needs at times to avoid getting up its ass with how grimdark it is.

So yeah, the galaxy is fucked, mankind is in the shitter, Chaos is on the rise, the Nids are eating everything they can, and Ghazgkull is dancing in circles and singing "Wut a wunderful waaghh" to himself now that Old Bale Eye is back, Trazyn has himself a caged C'tan fragment he snuck past everyone else chilling at home as he travels the galaxy looking for things that will make a fine addition to his collection, a Necron overlord had a midlife crisis after seeing all these damn primates living out on what's left of his front lawn, crashed out of the place, and is now living out of his boomermobile robbing everyone just because he can, and another one has decided that since he's already a bit loopy and isn't going to get any better to just live in the moment and make like a Victorian era English gentleman and return to the better times of of glorious adventuring and conquering for Silent King and Country he once loved so dearly.

(No, seriously, go read Severed. It will jerk at your heartstrings like crazy one minute and then have you almost breaking out into laughter at Zahndrekh being a madlad the next, and has one of the most bittersweet endings you will ever read, even by 40k standards.)

Games Workshop removed Cyclic Ion Blasters from Crisis Suits.

Clearly everyone there is unworthy of life, but ADB will be the first to be defenestrated.

Female Custodes don't really bother me, because A) I don't give a fuck about the Custodes as a faction and B) my understanding of their creation process is it's all warp fuckery, and genetics/surgery aren't a factor. What bothered me was the gaslighting bullshit GW employed in their reveal.

That said, the reason for their existence is as bodyguards for the Emperor, and I'd have to expect the logic in making one would be selecting the very best physical capability before enhancement for the process, and we've watched, IRL, 4 or more Female Secret Service have real trouble moving the current President of the US off the stage during his assassination attempt. 2 large men would've picked his fat ass up and carried him off by themselves with the other guys acting as bulletshields!

Ergo, wouldn't you pick the largest, most Brock Lesnarian motherfuckers possible before pumping them full of Magical Steroids and giving them the top armor not already attached to his Sons? What reason would you need to increase the 10,000 with a bunch of WNBA ladies?

Can the farmers in this very thread come up with a lore reason and reveal process/promotional angle that would've made them acceptable to the wider audience/fandom?

In both 30k and their introduction into 40k you are told custodes aside from being super amazing warriors they were also well versed in political dealings and even sometimes performing the work of the emperor for him on other planets to bring them into the fold, foster peace talks ,etc. It couldn't be out of the question that a genecrafted female custode would be the perfect envoy of peace to a planet who use their knowledge and looks to combat politically. Aside from that I got nothing that wouldnt produce rage becasue

>they needed to be a thing years ago and not introduced in a xitter post

You dont see people crying about Catachans who always had black people and even females in their ranks becasue that was the 90s (Although while Catachans are respected I do not think they really crack most guardfags top 5 lists for not really being that grimdark)
