Culture Guild Wars 2 writers fired following heated Twitter exchange with streamer - Gamergate, the gift that keeps on giving.

PC Gamer said:
Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet recently parted ways with writers Jessica Price and Peter Fries, who were involved in a contentious Twitter discussion with Guild Wars 2 Twitch streamer and YouTuber Deroir, who is also partnered with ArenaNet through its content creator program.

On Tuesday, July 3, Price wrote a lengthy Twitter thread about writing for MMOs, particularly Guild Wars 2, and why player characters are uniquely difficult to write compared to protagonists in singleplayer games. To put it simply, she discussed how to give characters personality in a way that also leaves room for players to create their own character. In a reply to Price's thread, Deroir argued that branching dialogue options could give players more ways to define their character's personality, overcome the MMO-specific constraints Price discussed, and improve the roleplaying potential of Guild Wars 2.

Yesterday Price highlighted Deroir's reply in a series of tweets suggesting he was uninformed and that his reply was condescending.

Among those tweets, the one that's drawn the most ire, particularly on the Guild Wars 2 subreddit, is Price's remark about "rando asshats" talking down to experienced writers and developers.

Responding to the mounting criticism of these tweets, Peter Fries defended Price's position in a now-deleted tweet which is archived here, saying "she never asked for [Deroir's] feedback".

For his part, Deroir said that he "meant no disrespect" and simply wanted to create "dialogue and discussion" with Price. He also apologized for any offense his argument may have caused.

In a post to the Guild Wars 2 forums, in a thread explicitly about Price and Fries' tweets, ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien characterized the statements as "attacks on the community," saying "two of our employees failed to uphold our standards of communicating with players" and that those employees are "no longer with the company." O'Brien also said "the statements they made do not reflect the views of ArenaNet at all."

It's no grand secret that game developers, especially women, are regularly targeted by fans who want to lash out, condescend or place blame, to say nothing of the insults, threats and other toxicity routinely hurled their way. That being said, this incident was not on the level of the harassment maelstroms we've seen in the past. A developer explained their writing philosophy, a partnered content creator offered feedback, and that developer responded somewhat rudely. Ordinarily that would be the end of it, perhaps followed by a round of apologies or someone stepping away from their role temporarily, but in this case ArenaNet felt the need to immediately fire the employees involved.
And the usual assclowns are out in full force:

Going back through articles like this one from PCG (comments already close which is just coincidental eh?) it seems their efforts are for naught.
The narrative came and is being pushed out too slow- EVERYONE knows she was the asshat in this case and it was completely justified to fire her and her little pet knight dressed in white. It's made circles all around Twitter, 4chan, forums of all kinds, and here obviously. People are actually getting pretty angry that everyone (i.e dangerhairs and the media) is defending her and lying so blatantly- even twisting the facts to make her the victim despite being the one to pull the trigger for the situation like an exceptional fucking idiot.
I'm curious to see if this keeps going, will there be a push-back? Will this be a spark that ignites the powderkeg?

Probably fucking not but it'd be amazing if it was.

YOU COULD'VE JUST IGNORED HIM DUMBASS.
She didn’t want to ignore him because she gets off on being a massive bitch to any man that dares disagree with her. Twitter makes it easy to establish your safe space and block “randos”, she chose not to because she enjoys arguing with “misogynist gamers”. It allows her to dunk on them for daring to share their opinion and rip them a new one to feel superior then get high fives from Jake Alley.

For the creative writing types, it's different. I can't really put my finger on how their brain operates.

Honestly, a lot of it comes down to not being challenged enough to be pushed out of their creative comfort zone. Not being critiqued objectively and taking said critiques as incentive to continuously improve as an artist. So they stagnate and typically end up as overly defensive cunts.

As with anything in life: strive to continuously improve or get the fuck out of the way for someone who can do it better. This bitch was simply shoved out the door for refusing to budge in every aspect of her craft and job. That and she's a cunt.

Jess is such a nobody the only reason I'm familiar with her has nothing to do with her actual jobs and everything to do with even bigger jobless failures like Secret Garden Gnome orbiting her twitter shitty threads all the time.

And now she'll be some kind of martyr assaulted by the bad internet boogeyman, just like she's always wanted.
While she's at it, she (or anyone else) may as well say it's all GoobyGrape oppression or that the TB fanboy's are coming to get her after she danced on the dead Brit's grave. Gotta milk the whole assault from the internet boogeyman.

He would no doubt look like a soyboy. Crappy post aside, didn't someone mention the Z-list Youtuber was someone who streamed Guild Wars 2 long enough to actually be a part of its community and have an NPC named after them? If so, this guy is actually bitching about a member of the game's community and not some YT rando.

My initial reaction: It's really dumb for anyone to get fired over tweets whether or not they're a social justice bully !!

But... when you take a moment to review the facts, you realize:
  1. Her Twitter account clearly showed she was an ArenaNet writer and she was certainly making an effort to have it known in her tweets.
  2. The company has long-standing social media rules in place, particularly with interacting with fans.
  3. She was probably already in hot water over the TotalBiscuit gravedancing.
ArenaNet did the right thing.

Now, they have to weather the storm of every leftist gaming publication twisting the facts and shit on them. And they're pretty much all leftist...

I just wish there was a way we could track the financial impact this will have; that will be the true test of whether more companies will follow suit with giving the boot to professional victims.

Arenanet is owned by NCSoft. They are Korean owned. They give absolutely zero fucks about the screeching harpies in the Western SJW gaming press. They actually give even less of a fuck than the Japanese publishers.

There comes a point where if you're going to say sexism is such a terrible and omnipresent problem, you have to acknowledge you're doing something wrong when you assume every male gamer is a disgusting misogynist until they make a big enough show of proving you wrong. It's no different than assuming a female dev is an airheaded ditz who slept her way into her position.

As for dealing with your customers who try to give you constructive criticism, I think acting like Maddox and going "you've never done this you shithead dullard so shut up" is the perfect example of what not to do. Imagine if a restaurant patron gave feedback about a burger he was served and the cook responded by crowing that the idiot customer has no idea how to use a grill or handle raw meat or button a chef's smock as if these things were the most personal of arts that no one could ever comment on because how dare they. The guy eating the burger might have a different perspective that's still valuable. Actually we know he does because businesses that think otherwise historically tend to stop existing.

Now imagine if the customer that the grill cook went off on was the NYT's food and restaurant critic? That's what just happened here.

You're actually wrong there. Their translation team actively changed content in Blade and Soul because it upset them personally. They also changed models and costumes for the Korean version because of their version of TERFs, it was happening around that whole GookGate thing where a cult of feminists - no really, they were like a covenant or something - were running the government.

That cult was run by a dude and that cunt has been sentenced to prison for 24 years.

Ah, I thought it was Mrs. Choi that founded it. Thanks for the correction. Still, the changes to the in-game model of an NPC happened - I recommend reading some of the comments as I'm not sure how you feel about GookAnon - around the same time because that Megalia group of theirs had ramped up protests. A lot of game developers supported their cause at the time before public backlash, I have no idea if they still support such behavior... they probably do as it seems safer.

It's terrible what happened but they kind of shook it off like a bad case of fleas.

He's trying so hard it's almost cute. He scattered all the ingredients for a CURRENT YEAR tweet on the counter but he just can't make a meal out of it.

Anyway, "Z-List Youtube celebrity" (he isn't totally wrong, the guy has like 8k subs), as opposed to an MMO writer, which sits where on the popularity totem pole? It's not like people are even perceived by the average gamer, unless they pull shit like this of course.

Poor Peter Fries, looks like being a white knight doesn't pay off.
Yeah, poor Peter. She's probably gonna get a position somewhere else (like mansplaining expert in Brianna Wu's campaign) as a reward for taking one for the team, but that guy? His white male privilege shall be reward enough.

Arenanet is one of those rare gaming companies that actually keeps promises. They promised no subscription fees (in an era where this was common) released a massive game for 60 dollars, and promised to constantly work on it, and update it, and paying for the whole thing via a micro transaction store that only sells swag and convenience items, not pay to win. They even pay an economist full time to keep the in game market stable and wage jihad on Chinese gold farmers.

Honestly, GW2 is the best MMO out there atm by a large margin. Glad to see them purging ideological idiots before they could sink their claws into it too deep. There recent living story content was starting to take an ominous turn and it seems the fears people felt were 100% justified. All the autistic screeching on Twitter is from those same idiots mad about losing control of this generation's MMO
