Fallout series

I used to hate Fallout 4 but I installed a bunch of gun mods and it's pretty fun trying them all out. NV is still my favorite game but the gunplay and general combat is lacking compared to 4. Combat is by far the most improved in 4, but for some reason they decided to ruin it all with shitty weapon variety (for 2-handed firearms there is the "Assault Rifle," "Combat Rifle" that isn't the R91 from 3, "Hunting Rifle" in a universe where everyone but you is left-handed, and more pipe weapons than there are shitty dialogue). If by some miracle the F4NV mod actually does get completed I'll be playing that all year, as NV had far superior weapon variety.

The gunplay mechanics in 4 are virtually the exact same thing. WTF are people on about when they say this.

fundamentally yes, it's just visually prettied up more to hide it. Like they made the iron sights transition and weapon sway look more natural, things like that.

New Vegas has better gun mechanics. The weapons make sense and need maintainence in a way that makes sense. The gun mods (of vanilla) are interesting but not necessary or stupid looking.

Fallout 4 did add in gun bashing, bayonets, leaning out of cover, npcs using cover, and designated grenade button. I feel I use vats less in 4 then I do in New Vegas. However it removed multiple ammo types that you can switch from on the go.

Gun-bashing (!!!!!!), leaning (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), aND A DESIGNATED GRENADE BUTTON??????????? are things a 15 year old could make in a mod. NPC's using cover is super inconsistent and I can still stand on rocks to confuse people with guns. And a lot of the fights, people just sit still and shoot. The AI wasn't updated (much), the movement wasn't updated (except for a sprint!!!!!!!!!! button!!!!!!!!!!!), the guns still don't have recoil that affects your aim or movement in a meaningful way (I almost said that the game didn't have recoil- I beat the fucking game and I forgot it had recoil. That's how much of a difference it made.). It's the same God damn game, lol.

Prove me wrong, @Vault Boy

Its been a while since I played New Vegas I have to admit but I just remember it being stiffer when it came to shooting. I could easily be mistaking 4 as having better gun play since that's really the only thing to focus on. I will say this however while having npcs use cover their animations for it are bad. Like if you just watch someone lean out of cover and fire an automatic weapon you will see them reset their animation for every shot.

There is also the oddity if you play in third person where you notice new animations play on power attacks and now can be affected by certain enemy ones where they can sweep your legs and knock you down.

To me, it seems like you're downplaying the advancements made to the combat just so that you wouldn't have to give Bethesda any credit. While it isn't as smooth as something like DOOM, it's a hell of a lot better than the janky combat in 3 & New Vegas.

Is there anything else you need, friend?
Not really proving me wrong tbh. It's "smoother" but that's basically a nice wallpaper. I can't "downplay" the improvements enough because they really are just bells and whistles. I thought the same thing of New Vegas' mechanics.

4 "feels" better. That's about it.
Also, aiming literally has never worked in third person.

And that's not much.
I never said it was a huge improvement. "Most improved" being in relation to the shit dialogue and room-temperature IQ factions that Bethesda seemed like was a good choice for the successor of 3 and NV.

edit: not to mention the gutted skill system and just shoving them all into perks with infinite leveling.

NV feels like I'm playing counter-strike, where as 4 feels more like a cover shooter. Maybe they are just different, and one is not better than the other in terms of gun play.

I just started a run of New Vegas, using this guide to play as Ben "Six Million More" Garrison. It also got me thinking of making a similar guide for fallout 4. I would like help with the faction side of things, like who would Ben be likely to side with in the game and who would either be neutral or marked for death by him.

Minutemen - Fine upstanding Americans protecting their homes. Support, possibly after adding a mod to make Preston less... problematic.
preston.jpg

Railroad - A faction protecting non humans from rightful eradication. Destroy on sight.
Institute - A (((faction))) trying to manipulate the wasteland with android replicants. Destroy on sight with great prejudice.
Brotherhood of Steel - Tough one, Ben Garrison would definitely respect them, but I don't think their habit of only really caring about tech is Ben's cup of tea. Neutral or support.

Far Harbor Shit-
Defend the Harbormen, help DiMA and the synths at first because Children of Atom are the bigger threat. Children of Atom is clearly a degenerate cult so nuke their sub. Then give DiMA's location to the Brotherhood or murder the synths yourself.

Nuka-World Shit-
Kill all the raiders.

My word, that is good stuff. Thanks. As for Preston, I will get a mod and have him gladiator fight a deathclaw and die or have him swing from a post. Oh Lord, this is gonna be fun. The hard part is getting my character to look like him.
