Culture Guild Wars 2 writers fired following heated Twitter exchange with streamer - Gamergate, the gift that keeps on giving.

PC Gamer said:
Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet recently parted ways with writers Jessica Price and Peter Fries, who were involved in a contentious Twitter discussion with Guild Wars 2 Twitch streamer and YouTuber Deroir, who is also partnered with ArenaNet through its content creator program.

On Tuesday, July 3, Price wrote a lengthy Twitter thread about writing for MMOs, particularly Guild Wars 2, and why player characters are uniquely difficult to write compared to protagonists in singleplayer games. To put it simply, she discussed how to give characters personality in a way that also leaves room for players to create their own character. In a reply to Price's thread, Deroir argued that branching dialogue options could give players more ways to define their character's personality, overcome the MMO-specific constraints Price discussed, and improve the roleplaying potential of Guild Wars 2.

Yesterday Price highlighted Deroir's reply in a series of tweets suggesting he was uninformed and that his reply was condescending.

Among those tweets, the one that's drawn the most ire, particularly on the Guild Wars 2 subreddit, is Price's remark about "rando asshats" talking down to experienced writers and developers.

Responding to the mounting criticism of these tweets, Peter Fries defended Price's position in a now-deleted tweet which is archived here, saying "she never asked for [Deroir's] feedback".

For his part, Deroir said that he "meant no disrespect" and simply wanted to create "dialogue and discussion" with Price. He also apologized for any offense his argument may have caused.

In a post to the Guild Wars 2 forums, in a thread explicitly about Price and Fries' tweets, ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien characterized the statements as "attacks on the community," saying "two of our employees failed to uphold our standards of communicating with players" and that those employees are "no longer with the company." O'Brien also said "the statements they made do not reflect the views of ArenaNet at all."

It's no grand secret that game developers, especially women, are regularly targeted by fans who want to lash out, condescend or place blame, to say nothing of the insults, threats and other toxicity routinely hurled their way. That being said, this incident was not on the level of the harassment maelstroms we've seen in the past. A developer explained their writing philosophy, a partnered content creator offered feedback, and that developer responded somewhat rudely. Ordinarily that would be the end of it, perhaps followed by a round of apologies or someone stepping away from their role temporarily, but in this case ArenaNet felt the need to immediately fire the employees involved.
And the usual assclowns are out in full force:

This has to be my absolute favorite of this little shitshow. Another of these entitled white progressive soy boys who likely lives on somebodies couch screeching “take their toys away” regarding the well funded consumer base of a $10 billion / annual industry. This is the secret when ever you see an industry infested with these cows. They don’t pay the bills. People like us do. It doesn’t matter what they shriek at us. Call us Nazi’s, Misogynists, racists, virtual rapists, hateful shitlords etc. we are the money. All of the money flows from us. The Gamers, the consumers, the generally 20, 30 and 40 something well educated career employed white male hetero nerds with high disposable income. We direct who gets paid. Never forget this. Stop paying to be shit on, and encourage others to do the same. If for no other reason it vastly increases the entertainment value among the clueless talentless cow brigade.

He's already backtracked a bit.

I'll give him credit, at least he admits she fucked up (repeatedly) which is a hell of a lot more than most of her other white knights have done.

Unfortunately for Randy the problem with Jessica is that she's impossible to lead. She's a horse that if you led it to water it would call the water sexist and refuse to drink any until it keeled over of dehydration and then a bunch of oblivious exceptional individuals would blame you for her death and start calling for a boycott of your farm.

http://archive.is/l7Og8

This is a big-ass Twitter rant (for fucks sake use a different fucking website if you're going to write 10,000 characters) she went on back in last October, claiming she was trying to fight the good fight against those damn dirty misogynerds but the meanie bosses wouldn't let her. Some choice quotes:

"Examples of being "rude"? Telling a guy to stop calling me Mrs., telling a guy who'd repeatedly hounded me that I was blocking him, etc."

What, was he supposed to call you "Mr." Price, what the fuck is the problem here? You don't address people on a first name basis if you're not close to them Jessica, that's basic fucking etiquette. Though given how you responded to that guy on Twitter it seems safe to say you have absolutely no knowledge of it.

"For years, I bent over BACKWARDS offering professional help on how to make the community less toxic and they ignored it."

That's because you're fucking quality assurance not the fucking community manager.

You'll notice a reoccurring theme with Jessica is her belief that she knows fucking everything and is right 100% of the time. Unfortunately for her this belief conflicts with reality.

"Like if someone actually made explicit threats, they'd deal with it. It's not that they were monsters--they just didn't want to be bothered."

"I knew how to run their company better than they did"

"They had employees who had way more professional expertise in these issues than they did, and they treated us like unruly children."

The professional expertise of being the community manager on a terrible game no one played that lasted all of 5 months before Microsoft cancelled further development (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Flight#Cancellation). I'm sure having to coral all those rowdy flight simulator fans must have been real tough work and is totally comparable to that of a fucking MMORPG with about 1000 times as many players.

"But if you came to them like look, I'm a professional, I'm an expert on this stuff, and how we're handling it isn't cool, you got blown off."

If you came to them as a smug, self-righteous git they wouldn't respond favorably. Who could have possibly seen that coming?

"And dealing with a lot of the forum/community stuff, eventually the conclusion was "ok, you're not required to post there." Not to FIX it."

And now we're getting to the meat of the matter. Jessica's bosses looked at her experience on the forums and determined the best thing for everyone was for her to fuck off them and just do something else. Unfortunately, Jessica has never seen poop she doesn't wanna touch.

"And yeah, I don't have as many receipts for this stuff because I trusted their assurances that they cared, for years."

"I don't have any proof but do you really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?"

But you know, after years of inaction, and years of being treated as if pointing out problems is an infraction, you start to get cynical.

Because pointing out problems isn't your fucking job, fool. If I was a store manager and my fucking janitor kept coming up to me and telling me how to do my job better I'd probably get really fucking annoyed pretty fast too.

Not just Paizo: many companies treat the employees who risk themselves to get stuff fixed internally so it never GOES public as problems.

Because. It's. Not. Your. Fucking. Job.

"And ultimately, no company can prevent harassment, assault, bad actors on forums, etc. But they can control how they react to it."

Given how you responded to polite disagreement from a guy who worshiped the ground you stood on I sure as shit wouldn't let you have free reign on how you chose to react to things.

"And, like, look, they don't have anything I want for myself at this point. But I do continue to worry about my team members still there."

"haha I didn't wanna work there anymore anyways LOLZ"

"Like, I was willing to get in people's faces because I had a background in video games, and felt like I could go somewhere else if I needed."

A completely nonexistent background which gave you the right to do none of that. Going somewhere else worked out real well for you though.

tl;dr Jessica Price's ego is the size of a small planet and completely uncontrollable.
Galactic ego, small brain.

Well, its what happened with Ghostbusters, which basically killed Sony Studios. It killed the Star Wars brand. It killed that shit Ocean's 8 remake, if Marvel Comics wasn't supported by Papa Disney, it'd be dead as fuck by now, selling off properties to stay afloat. You've got these millennial tards in marketing who are going, "All my friends were progressives, there's a new audience, these people don't matter!"

Turns out dumb faggots who like to virtue signal on Twitter don't buy shit, except Apple and Starbucks. Western game development is kinda fucked with this shit. It's all about Eastern gaming now, whether it be from Eastern Europe or Japan. I'll pre-order from CD Projekt Red every time because I know they respect the material they utilize and the customer. They don't give a fuck about this shit in any other way except in some superficial bullshit way. Japan certainly doesn't give a fuck about Western morality.

'Get Woke, go Broke' is a real thing. I've never seen this shit turn a profit. It always fucking fails, falls off a cliff. You can scream about Gamergate all you want and try to beat a dead horse. But most normies now don't even know what the fuck you're talking about and even if they do, they vaguely remember it. Even the people most involved in GG don't even fucking talk about it anymore. Its just these dumb faggots that do. Here's a hint: If GG is so pervasive, it won a LONG time ago and there is jack shit you can do about it. Every single tweet you do alienates normies who don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

For games, I've got a million choices. I don't need you. You need me.

Anti-GG: GruberGrime is mad becuz they think girlz are gonna take away their toys, even though we just want to join in, we're totally just like them. They're crazy to think we're trying to invade and destroy their hobby.

Also Anti-GG: Fuck them, take away their toys, we need to bully these stupid nerds back into silence!

Also Also Anti-GG: I don't get why people use SJW as a bad word.

What an amazing news story, and kudos to all the screenshotters. This is an article/happening with a LOT of individual lolcows. Jessica Price is a huge asshole for an unqualified writer, and this might be the tipping point into her getting her own thread. Jake Alley/Violet Hargrave/SecretGamerGirl is a dingleberry hanger-on online to her every word. A half a dozen Gamergate lolcows all chimed in, who each have threads here already. :story:

A reminder that once GW2 launched and Colin jumped ship, they started hiring trannies into upper management: Jessica Croft went from QA testing to a lead designer position for example.

You have to fuck up HARD for an ultra-lefty hive like this to shitcan you.

"today in being a female game dev"

Ugh. Fuck you, "female game dev" has nothing to do with it. MMO players are fucking animals and they don't care who or what you are. They spend 8 hours a day, 7 days a week on a single game for 5 years; they want the game to be exactly the way they want it to be, and as the dev they think it's your job to cater to that. I'm glad she got fired just because she's somehow blind to the fact that MMO players have been harassing devs since long before the first ~female game dev~ was even hired.
Remember the time the Star Wars Galaxies fans bullied one of the game-breaking NGE developers to suicide? That was a really bad update for the game tbh, it really killed it.

Any of these wonderful devs who feel such contempt and loathing for the very customers who keep their lights on are welcome to quit and go flip some burgers.
Doubting that's a dev. If you prove you work for any studio past or present or have a game you can show under your belt, that's your ticket to an easy 100-1000+ followers. At 79 followers that's just an opinionated nobody towing the party line. Meg Jaycanth, she definitely is.

Oh I don't think that guy works in the industry, but his sentiments seem to be echoed by some who do.

ArenaNet president: Fired devs 'could have chosen not to engage' on social media

Polygon published an interesting interview with ex-ArenaNet staffer Jessica Price in which the veteran dev speaks at length about how she and colleague Peter Fries were fired from the company last week after getting into a Twitter argument with a fan.

A public post from ArenaNet cofounder and president Mike O'Brien (in which he called Price and Fries' sarcastic comments "attacks on the community") announced the firings to Guild Wars 2 fans, and in response some gathered in hubs like Reddit to celebrate their perceived power to get devs fired.

Price told The Verge she felt her firing set a chilling precedent for devs, stating that "the message is very clear, especially to women at the company: if Reddit wants you fired, we’ll fire you." That makes it all the more interesting, then, to see that when Polygon requested comment from O'Brien, he claims Price's frustrated Twitter response would itself have a chilling effect -- on fan engagement.

"[Price] was representing the company. The expectation was to behave professionally and respectfully, or at least walk away. Instead, she attacked," O'Brien stated. "We want to hear from our players. It’s not acceptable that an attempted interaction with our company — in this case a polite game suggestion — would be met with open hostility and derision from us. That sets a chilling precedent."

It's part of the longest explanation O'Brien has given publicly to date, and it comes amidst an interview in which Price expresses regret for ever recommending ArenaNet to fellow devs (especially women) and claims that she joined the company in part because of its upfront promises to respect and value employees' voices.

"There were meetings in which executives promised us that they wanted us to speak up about the ugly things, the harmful things, and that we wouldn’t be punished for doing so,” said Price. “And so it’s devastating that a company talking all that talk folded like a cheap card table the first time their values were actually tested. Doing the right thing is hard, sure, but doing it regularly makes it easier to keep doing it. And the corollary to that is that capitulating makes it harder to stop capitulating."

The rest of the interview is well worth reading in full over on Polygon, as Price speaks very frankly about the experience and how it's led to her withdrawing from the digital world in order to avoid being harassed and/or doxxed.

"I’m very tired,” she told Polygon. “I’m not reading the reactions. What would be the point? I have a security team handling my social media, since I’m under full bot assault. There’s nothing worth reading from bots and strangers on Twitter. If fellow devs want to reach out to me — and they have been, in droves — we have a network of mutual connections through which they can do that."

Anyone who's ever been on Paizo's Pathfinder forums has probably heard of this cunt.

She had a reputation for going into threads where players were politely asking writers questions and the writers were responding to even tough questions with clarifications and good natured humor. They were chill threads.

Until she'd barge in and start being openly hostile. While other writers would respond to, say, a plot hole with "Huh. Never noticed that! Could be a good adventure hook for the party to investigate!", she'd respond with "It's something you obviously just don't understand..."

She was also ALWAYS spouting SJW drivel on the forums, talking about privilege, "Problematic" things in RPGs, how every RPG pushes a political agenda, and blaming "Toxic" gamers for everything.

Eventually she got so infamous and obnoxious that Paizo booted her.
Given the type of people Paizo has hired like Amber Scott who can't write worth shit and this one tranny who spends most of their waking hours attacking real women and lesbians online, for her to get shit canned you know she's the worse they had in the company. You can't even say it was misogyny either because the CEO of the company is a woman and an okay game developer.

Now given Jen's history she'll probably be blacklisted for the majority of the studios unless she wants to move and work for a small indie startup. Or work for Hello Games so people start talking about those failures again.

Absolutely infuriating. "Executives promised us that they wanted us to speak up about the ugly things, the harmful things, and that we wouldn’t be punished for doing so,” does not account for publicly shitting on a suggestion with a main youtuber community partner and needing the last word/refusing to back down. Especially when his suggestion about branching dialogue was grounded in the precedent that the launch storyline is full of branching dialogue choices that steer your Personal Story into variant missions before going back down main storyline beats. The correct interaction would have been, "we hear your feedback, it isn't the direction we're currently going in but we'll take it into account going forward" and ending it there, not "fuck your stupid idea, I'm the writer, not you. Also I hate how much pull you fucking youtubers have."

Blizzard blueposters are pretty much the gold standard here.

i wish these people would make up their minds on if they're nerds or not

My favorite is when they start calling everybody incels 'Ha look at all of these socially awkward who can't get laid, you nerd virgins!'. Their personalities appear so ingrained with pop-culture nostalgia even the insults are going back to the 80-90s.
