Steam user reviews are full of meme garbage, outside of a general impression of what the public thinks of the game overall, you can't learn anything from user reviews. Anything worth knowing about a game before buying it isn't going to be in the user reviews section unless it's a massive glaring flaw that already got the attention of everyone who was mildly interested in the game anyway. The discussions forum is notorious for having rogue developers and community admins run around deleting posts they don't like and banning users who complain too vocally, other than that it's full of absolute useless trash topics like this

first of all, the vast majority of people have shit taste and have been so accustomed to social media they can't have steam without using it like one. currency support and conversion ratios have been added in epic (for most countries, and they are still continuing to improve it). epic has a workshop equivalent, but it is quite unfinished, so i'll give that one to you. also steam key generation has led the devs to lose thousands of dollars because of awful shady sites like G2A

You talk of temptation as if they're literally the devil, you should consider whether or not you might be more than slightly biased against this company for very stupid reasons. They gave away Subnautica a while ago and I've clocked up almost 2 days' total playtime in that over the last few weeks, it's a great game. Edith Finch is a really cool title too, worth playing. None of the games they've given away have been trash that I've seen. They're all pretty great.
Video games are not shiny useless trinkets or in any way secondary to the purpose of a video game distribution platform.

The vast majority of people who are actually interested in learning about a game before they buy it check things like metacritic, reddit or youtube reviews, not the shitty steam meme review section. Epic has no obligation to provide yet another platform for people to post reviews, it's not "anti-consumer" because they don't have this feature that adds nearly no value to the user experience on their brand new platform that they're trying to break into the market with. Offering free games as an incentive to check out their store seems like a pretty pro-consumer thing to do to me. Valve used to do a lot of free weekends for their games back before steam was the powerhouse that it is today.
