I personally think it's weird and makes you look distrustful, but to each their own. This is what is gonna be the future. Think about it, did Patreon, Twitch and these enabling sites exist in 2011? In the 2020s, it's gonna get worse. Soon he's gonna be a full live streamer playing old N64 titles like Banjo and even Sonic Dreamcast. Chris could fall asleep playing his games on live and get a 2 hour lucid dream and claim how he entered the game (because a lot of people in the lucid dream world use vidya to trigger them) and tell the viewing pay pigs what he experienced. Kids would gladly pay their allowance for free entertainment, with up to $100 a second sometimes.

This is a real phenomenon. I even get Youtubers visit my tourist trap which sure costs a pretty penny.

You have a statistical chance of perhaps embarrassing or scaring some percentage away (something I encourage, because at least it makes the problem less severe), but ultimately it's a losing game. Chris is being gang stalked and there's no surefire way to solve that.

Chris is insane. He has self harmed and been the victim of crime because of his insanity. Anyone who encourages or plays along with his insanity is a shithead.

Furthermore, when Barb dies, Chris is going to need IRL support. In the same way that telling him the merge is wrong, I think it's also immoral (to a lesser extent) to befriend Chris online on a shallow, part-time basis.

If someone befriends him IRL naturally (like his pokemon card friends, or perhaps the people at the gay bar), that's not really their fault, per se, because normal people make casual acquaintances IRL all the time. Like at church.

But if you don't know Chris naturally, like if the only reason you know of him is his notoriety, and you decide to insert yourself into his life as a lark anyway, I think that's kinda shitty to some degree. Especially if you lied in the process (even if it's a little white lie).

The reason being, every person contacts Chris who is in on the joke is sapping away a little bit of his attention, a bit of his attention that should rightfully be going to him pursuing IRL relationships. Chris will start to (and does) believe that these people are close personal friends, and that when Barb dies, Chris can reach out to them and they'll help him. He thinks he'll be alright. But in reality, all they'll be able to say is "oh... yeah, sorry, I just messaged you because you're an internet meme, sorry, idk call 911?"

Everyone who contributes to that is a shithead. Even if just a little bit. Even if you think you're not trolling him in the traditional sense, you're still injecting yourself into a stranger's life under false pretenses, with no intention of being an actual intimate, close acquaintance, on the basis that you think it'll be funny or interesting or fun. You're treating his life as a fun diversion for you, when it's deadly fucking serious for him.

Consider the knowledge gap between you and Chris. He thinks you really like him. You think he's the laughing stock of the internet. You're statistically likely of normal intelligence, or at least smarter than he is. In comparison, he's mentally insane and retarded.

But all this being said, it's not like any one single perpetrator of this behavior is the single most terrible person. Hundreds of people pull this shit and most of the time Chris forgets about them. It's not like any one of them is going to be the dealbreaker that seduces Chris away from going to church that one predestined day where he meets some off-duty social worker with a heart of gold who saves him when Barb dies.

No one person is going to be responsible for that. That'd be absurd.

Rather, what the real problem here is the general gangstalking attitude, where people have no qualms about inserting themselves into a retard's life for fun and then abandoning him. They treat him as public property because someone before them did it already.

All of these bad actors add up. It's a tragedy of the commons situation.

What's legal and what's ethical are very different issues.

Ethically it's pretty easy to argue that Chris is not a functional adult, if not for his pre-idea guy mental state, most assuredly for his post-idea guy mental state. Barb has essentially abdicated (and in many ways, done the exact opposite) her parental duties. Is it ethical to control what Chris does? No... but in the same way it's not ethical to snatch up unaccompanied orphans off the street. You could argue the government should step in.

I'd say it was a huge violation of medical ethics for the system to give Chris a prescription for HRT.
