Artcow Jonathan Wojcik / Bogleech / Scythemantis

The thing that strikes me as super weird about him is that when something sets him off it's like he completely loses self-control for a while and when he comes out of it he doesn't seem to acknowledge that anything out of the ordinary happened during his freakout. It's depressing since he's good at the whole content-creation thing (hell, just look at the creepypasta cookoff) and could be really great if he could just get help or rein it in a little.

You can see it happen at least once early on in Awful Hospital - the whole thing starts with the mood and pacing of the old mad doctor Mickey Mouse cartoon where it's just about a character exploring a cartoony environment that clearly has something very wrong with it (which he pulls off really well) but there's a sudden out-of-nowhere fight vs a gigantic teratoma-looking monster that's drawn in a much rougher, grosser style and has really weird and offputting narration over it that's reminiscent of the sort of things you'd hear from an abusive parent. Afterwards it abruptly goes back to the cartoony exploration. Somehow he got mad at something and thrown into a depressive spiral for long enough to do.. that.. and then just came out of it and never once questioned its appropriateness or coherence with the previous narrative.

Which fight are you referring to? Because there are several that deliberately use artistic dissonance with the earlier style as an emphasis. I think you're reading way too much into things in this case.

God, such a chimpout

WTF was with that last section? Call her a TERF or whatever but "Hiterella" and mentioning the KKK? I don't get the connection.
Honestly I find the whole 41% off thing kinda darkly funny but I can't believe he pulled that "Every person I dislike is Literally Hitler!!!" move 100% seriously.

Bogleech doesn't do nuance. He pretty much assumes that everyone he dislikes is all one amorphous mass that delight in kicking puppies and strangling babies. That's why, despite the fact that I like his articles on insects and parasites, I fully think he deserves a thread.

I don’t know anything about this show or why people are shitting their pants over it. What is this?
Sorry, can't help with that one - I don't really watch anime...I looked at tvtropes and it sems to be one of the "bad things happen constantly and involve children, and not a single person is really good" cheap shock things (but with nice backgrounds). And a girl I know has claimed a character from it as a husbando.

Weird fantasy manga that's famous for it's borderline-gorn scenes. That's probably what the post above is dancing around talking about: the illustration style used in MiA is frequently used in guro material, whether artistically or for fetishistic reasons. It also resembles... shit, can't remember what it's called, but it's this really specific sick fuck meme about brain-damaged blobs based on Tohou getting mutilated.

Yukkuri abuse. It's the shit that inspired fluffies.

Those are rookie numbers, you gotta pump those numbers up.

I had no idea this even existed.
Damn touhou fandom is fucking mental.

Tryhards and losers in the interwebs also love complaining about its borderline shotacon and borderline lolicon moments.

I have some doubts that his beliefs are the result of some inherent mental problem (or developmental scarring) that keeps him from seeing morality & ideology in shades of grey. Around 2013 he was openly left wing, but still openly dunked on Tumblr girls for crying about cartoon boobs. He loves the Skullgirls designs and "big-boobed anime girl" Digimon. He obviously has a lot of the same "bigoted, misogynist beauty standards" he rails against. He prefers his sexy girl art to have a "Halloweeny"/"spooky" look, but that shit is about as woke as finding 80s Elvira hot.

His current views are pretty dumb, but they also seem to be very mainstream in middle-class anglo western culture right now. It's the kind of shit you'll find watching/reading mainstream news. I could say the difference lies in how goddamn obsessive he is about his social justice crusades, because he's an awkward nerd... but journalists for the most influential publications are still getting PTSD from Gamergate half a decade later.

Still, it really sucks that he's become such a basic bitch weepy radlib. When he's not making a clown of himself, I think his commentary on visual media is terrific. This is naturally subjective, but I think he's not a particularly great cartoonist; and there's tons of other places to learn about bugs. The reason I love reading the site is his insight about art and fiction. He's particularly good at pinpointing what makes monsters and the stories behind them cool, scary, charming, whatever; he not only understands technical design and art stuff, his wealth of knowledge allows him to accurately pinpoint the natural and/or folkloric inspirations behind all the things he writes about. All this while focusing on the once-mainstream appeal of charming ugliness & weirdness that used to be huge in the rebellious edgy 90s but is now niche as fuck. And last but not least, he can deliver all that in a very approachable, easy-to-read way devoid of the pretentious academic newspeak you'll find in internet analysis culture. I watch and read this shit all the time and he's really one of the best at talking about nerdy subject matter when he's not pandering to smol bean culture or being contrarian to "trigger the bigots".

I DO don't think he's an interesting mess of a person... in the same way that millions of people are these days. At this point, it's normal to be a lolcow.

Bogleech strikes me as being cut from the same cloth as a long of late 2000s internet personalities. He wrote for Cracked for awhile, and appropriately I see him a lot like David Wong. Awkward types who had pretty edgy personas but were still decent people at heart. Both of them seemed to have cooled off a lot as they got older. Both of them seem to have trouble handling the fact that they're getting older. And, especially for Bogleech, it seems like they have serious acceptance issues.

A good perspective to keep in mind in these situations is that SJW stuff is a trend, not a coherent ideology. People don't become assimilated by it, they adopt it. People who have low self-esteem and feel guilt easy are especially susceptible to it. I suspect that if pop culture had gone in the opposite direction, people like Bogleech would be sharpening their edge more instead of retreating into the SJW stuff. Its clear Jon's got his own personality and interests, but it seems like he can't make a worthwhile persona. I don't think he's nuts, but I think he might end up nuts later. The pictures of his house looked like the start of a hoarding nightmare and the last ones I saw were easily five years old.

Personally I think of Bogleech as a cautionary tale for anyone who's a little too sensitive and worries too much about what other people might think of you. Its clear he's let that part of himself take over. I still read his stuff on occasion, but its only a matter of time before his brain liquefies completely.

Wong still makes a "problematic" comment every once in a while, the kinda shit that makes the Chapo Trap House subreddit have a meltdown. He joined the trend but he's not been consumed by it. Bogleech... kind of has been.
Becoming more politically hardcore is a common form of midlife crisis.

I made a throwaway account on here just to get this off my chest.

I really used to respect this guy for standing outside the box for being a more unique artist years ago, but sadly his personality (or what others expect of him)?has gotten the best of him. I’m not sure if it’s his own mental illness, or laziness, but his quality and amount of art has dropped greatly.

He personally tried to convince someone I know through messages how people go through their daily lives fearing outright nazis Implying a meme posted on social media was in bad taste. On one occasion I had the chance to meet him, but I outright declined because I was genuinely afraid of hurting his feelings because of how sensitive he seems from his online persona(?).

It’s sad to see that he’s so politically biased that he can’t see how relatively normal people laugh at him for his political ideas or opinions (oddly enough I feel like he’s a SJW because of a fear of social rejection, but that’s kind of a broad guess).

On one occasion he was confronted on tumblr for saying antifa didn’t exist and it was a “boogieman” from conservatives which he quickly retracted/deleted after people corrected him which is pretty ironic considering how outwardly hateful he is to people who are even a little right-to-center. (Including recently norm macdonald...really?)

I personally feel like his case is very sad, especially because he’s so biased and surrounded by “yes men” who will never criticize him so he can grow. If he took the time to listen to other opinions without cartoonishly painting them as monsters who want to keep people down, he might grow and learn not only to respect others but himself in turn. He’ll never do it, but he needs to get rid of things like tumblr to leave his “bubble”.

It’s ironic how hateful he is.

I use to be a fan of bogleech during the pre-tumblr days. Discovered him back in 09 when I was trying to ID a TMNT bad guy who's name I forgot..Mutagen Man I believe. He was a neat, quirky guy I kinda respected as a fellow arm-chair entomologist and friend of "creepy crawlies".

I firmly believe tumblr combined with his current amorphous blob of a wife is what ruined him. He was always left leaning as a self-described "liberal environmentalist" but hell, so was I back then during the pre-gamergate era. Maybe he was always this wacky but kept it to himself, I don't know. He's a nice artist but I've never been a fan of intentionally ugly stuff and always found his monster designs to be a bit "busy" as a monster/kaiju aficionado myself.

His stance on insects is something I will always agree with though. I can't stand the "KILL IT WITH FIREEE REEEE" reddit mentality most have toward arthropods.

I think it's also, uh, he also discovered what "acceptable target" is and is trying to move his fave stuff and prob himself out of that field by interspacing bug things with epic takes like this
