@RomanesEuntDomus I don't see how this trilogy had any chance overall. How, never mind why, would you ever want to try to continue such a good story that resolved almost all the conflict within it that ended decades ago (especially with a new set of characters within the old character's timelines who I am 100% convinced couldn't have been written in without either being pointless themselves or making the previous ones pointless)? If it was the Thrawn story stuff (not familiar with that), they might have had a chance, but in this case, no way. Not with the way they handled the new characters.

So I had a thought experiment. What is the best possible origin of Rey's power?

Sheev found a Force-sensitive woman and knocked her up. Then, to keep the Sheev bloodline concentrated and pure, he knocked up his daughter. The offspring of that union was Rey.

It explains literally everything about her.

It's a very convincing theory and, I'm not saying I disagree, but how would you explain shows like Sailor Moon, or the entire magical girl genre? True, they have a lot of male fans, but they were designed for women in mind, and they have huge female fanbases.

Winx club has been on the air for years now, it makes a lot of money given it's basically a toy commercial for doll, and it's basically a show about women using magic to fight villains.

I've never seen any of those shows, but there's nothing wrong with making fantasy stories aimed at girls or women or with female leads. They just tend to have a narrower appeal than ones more closely based on mythic archetypes.

Star Wars wasn't just a successful movie franchise, it was a cultural phenomenon on the same sort of scale as the Beatles or the Bible - everyone from the kids in the playground to the President of the United States knew what it was about, who Darth Vader was, and could hum the theme tune. I don't think Sailor Moon has that sort of pull.

The Hunger Games was a huge success and I did see the first movie in that franchise. It was interesting that Catniss wasn't written the way a male protagonist would be - most of the action happened around her rather than at her instigation, and the love triangle was a major part of the story (and its appeal to women, I guess)

Her signature weapon was the bow - a weapon designed to kill people from a safe distance. I don't know if it would have had the same audience if she eviscerated people up close with a sword. (Battle Royale was a lot less female-friendly than the Hunger Games, even though they had very similar setups)

So she was an action hero, but a recognizably feminine one. This is good writing.

From what I've seen of Rey, she isn't well written enough to be interesting or relatable as a protagonist, and casting her as a boy called Ray wouldn't have fixed that. But it would've made it easier for the writers.

They weren't up to the task of giving us a lead character as iconic as Luke Skywalker, so of course they failed at the additional challenge posed by their lead, in an action-oriented sci fi fantasy, being a girl. This is why the Mary Sue stuff gets thrown around. She's not exactly a Mary Sue, but she isn't particularly relatable or sympathetic or satisfying either - for either male or female audiences.

Princess Leia will probably still be a popular and famous character long after Rey is forgotten.

If we're going to compare Eastern Storytelling to Western Storytelling then you must know the difference between the two.

With stuff like anime and manga you get more character driven stories that explore the inner thoughts and struggles of said character. We see this with stuff like Dragon Ball, Trigun, Hellsing, Sailor Moon, Fist of the North Star, Re: Zero, Goblin Slayer, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and so on where we see the said characters thinking about their next move in a fight or we see flashbacks about what made the characters into what they are and using their wits in a game of cat and mouse. This is why anime and manga became so popular because these two forms of media go all out to explore the characters and watch them mature and not to mention that anime and manga is famous for touching on topics and themes that can be offensive and sometimes really dark too.

Now with Western Storytelling you get a story that is more plot driven and there is nothing wrong with this too. Take the 1993 film Jurassic Park as an example of this. We the audience don't nessicialy need to know the background and all of the wants and needs of the characters and neither do we the audience have to know everything from the novel by Michael Crichton. The story is straightforward; a company engaged in genetic engineering did what should not be possible has created a theme park attraction to show off extinct prehistoric creatures. Now in the first scene of the movie, we can see a velociraptor killing a worker which foreshadows the things to come. Later on, we see that the park is getting sued after one of the workers have died and the family wanted compensation for the loss of their loved one. So John Hammond invites several professionals in the field of paleontology to show that the park is safe. But then things began to turn for the worse when a rouge employee, Dennis Nedry, sabotages everything for the sake of money and ironically enough he would become one of the first victims of his own actions. The dinosaurs became free to do what they want and the people that were on the island were getting killed off one by one. The remaining surviors would then leave the island after everything goes down the toilet and the movie ends there.

There's nothing wrong with both of these styles of story telling. But the problem is that Hollywood seems to forget about why these types of stories are good to begin with. They basically forgotten that regardless if a story is character driven or plot driven, we have to be given a reason to why we have to invest our time in both the characters and the story becase if the writers won't give a shit then there is no reason for anyone to give a shit either.

Those Kiwis old enough to have seen the nine films in the studio or shortly after release in other forms (video, DVD, etc.) could probably share plenty of firsthand stories about the anticipation and excitement surrounding news that another SW film was coming out.

My first were the SE's in the mid 90's as a dumb tween (the SE target audience), and despite people hating them in retrospect, even then there was an assload of hype for those, because in addition to the new scenes, remastering, and toys, Star Wars Kids - second only to Nick Magazine as far as patrician kid reading went - was hyping the shit out of the prequels long before anyone else had scraps, which was probably by design to get the next generation of fans in seats. Prior to all that, Star Wars was mostly cruising by on excellent Lucasarts games and those VHS box sets with the Vader/Stormtrooper/Yoda close-ups, so the SE's were both creating new fans AND getting your parents ready for Phantom

The lead-up to Phantom's release was one of the biggest movie events I can ever remember, and when I actually saw it, the theater was packed with people wearing costumes and waving Lightsabers around, it was the same deal with the SE's, and audience participation like that naturally stopped after Phantom. Disney's "outreach screenings" for consoomers has some of the fakest excitement ever if you've been around SW nuts in the 90's

On that note, I think the SE's are a mixed bag, and ROTJ is really the only one that's glaringly "specialized". I think this is a better track to end Jedi on, but there is no way to save Jedi Rocks

So I'm probably late on this but it looks like that 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' isn't really doing so well in China. So when even in China, which is a really huge market for movies and when the film isn't doing so well over there either, then you know that this film is really going to sting Disney in the aftermath.

China never gives a fuck about Star Wars but the American movie industry big times them into airing star wars or else they won't get all the Cars and Explosions movies that they like.

That's true. Even the very earliest mentions of Fett play up the fact that he really only cares about being paid well. If he does appear in The Mandalorian, it'll be interesting to see if there's some kind of conflict between him and the show's Mando tribe, since being a self-interested loner really clashes with their philosophy of being Mandalorian.

Mandy was supposedly born naturally from a Mandalorian woman, Boba was born in a fucking lab on Kamino. He did love and respect his dad but I dont think Jango Fett had time to properly teach him Mandalorian values and philosophy before getting yeeted by Windu. Boba was then raised by other bounty hunters, adopting THEIR culture more than a mandalorian, so while he may be biologically one, culturally he is barely one. He has his own set of values and limits (I remember mentioning that while he was cold stone, he did beat up Jabba's goons when they were attempting to rape Leia, evidence that shit like that is just going too far to him). Yes, it would be interesting seeing Mandy and Boba clashing perhaps not physically but in terms of both morality and their own native culture.
