SJW shit from my university:
-The queer resource center here shutting down a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show because it's apparently transphobic because it uses the word "transvestite". It's worth nothing that it seems like only one or two people in the group were wanting to do this and pretty much everyone else (including other transgender people) was saying it was a stupid overreaction, but because of muh privileges I guess they prevailed.
-A girl saying we shouldn't watch Forrest Gump because she read an article on Tumblr about it being racist.
-A girl getting mad at her class showing Akira Kurosawa's Rashômon because it was rape culture, then getting angry when her teacher or students didn't know what that term meant.
-The same girl, who is pale white as fuck, posting a video about how "HAVING AN ASIAN FETISH IS RACIST!!!!" Someone said in response that if you are fetishizing someone based on stereotypes it is indeed racist but that we can't control what we're physically attracted to. She replied with: "No. True attraction has to come from physical chemistry which can only be attained in real life!" So... I guess that's why people don't find porn arousing. Good to know.
-She also listens to nothing but K-Pop but thinks that phrase is racist because "it reduces their identity to a mere letter" and "doesn't respect them as artists."
-There's particularly one guy who is the archetypal Dobson-style beta suck up white male SJW. He has a pedo-stache and bad-looking long curly hair and wears fedora-tier pinstripe suits every day. I heard him once saying that the hatred over Twilight was ridiculous because "After all, abusive relationships are more common than ordinary ones in media representation. So of course men would object when it's a franchise that makes women happy."
-The most hilarious thing with him happened when I was explaining to two other girls what "Trap Rap" meant. I said "Well, do you know what a 'trap' is? It's a slang term for a place where people sell and exchange drugs." This fucker jolts into our conversation and says "IT'S ALSO A SLUR FOR TRANS WOMEN, SO YOU SHOULD BE CAREFUL USING THAT!!!"
I really think this zealousness about identity politics has reached too far. For example, right now there's a big movement here for the classes in here to have "LESS DEAD WHITE MALE AUTHORS!!!" I understand what they're getting at, but I think you have to realize that in the West a lot of our intellectual tradition is rooted in white males due to the unfortunate history of marginalization. But you will get NOWHERE if you can't engage with ideas no matter who produced them. Otherwise, you're just picking and choosing what you want to believe based on how well it conveniences you, and that's the exact opposite of what a university should extol. Less dead white male authors is fine, but please let the ideas take precedence over everything else.
It just irks me because it seems like the only way these types enjoy their media/art/intellectual theories etc. is how closely it reflects their political ideology, which is so utterly alien to me. It just feels like activists have gone from emphasizing how we're all the same to emphasizing that we're different and can't possibly understand each other, which just seems to antithetical to all their stated goals. It must be why "POC" is coming back after "colored" was put to rest as inoffensive, so we can divide the world into very simplistic "white" and "non-white" groups again. I dunno, it weirds me out.
