Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I'm pretty surprised at how well the world is faring against it. You would had expected India or California to explode, but they're surprisingly taken the whole thing well with a few slip-ups.
I'm increasingly getting the impression that it may, in fact, be just a strong flu, but China is really that amazingly much of a shit hole that just a strong flu does this due to a perfect storm of mismanagement and hygiene.

Oh boy look like Xi is using this as an excuse to clean house and instill his fucking lackeys in key positions. So far the party head of Hubei has been replaced by the, now former, mayor of Shanghai. The dude in charge of Macau and HK has also just been replaced by a Xi loyalist.

Also a hot theory: the reason why the national figures are now 4+ hours behind is because all the provincial leaders are trying to decide what numbers to report to Beijing.

I'm pretty surprised at how well the world is faring against it. You would had expected India or California to explode, but they're surprisingly taken the whole thing well with a few slip-ups. 60k+ infected, 1355+ dead in China vs 463 infected, and only 1 dead globally. I don't want to count on the fact that some people out there are having it and showing no symptoms, which make it impossible to count them until they start showing weeks later but looking at those numbers shows you a lot of things.
Meanwhile, specific other places are quiet about it. North Korea aside, I'm also suspicious at New York being wholly silent after taking a while to confirm those cases.

Nobody knows what's going on, tbh "Is" the rest of the world faring well? It's still early to tell all I hear is low chance and don't worry from countries outside china. My best guess is its already loose so the end result will be the same anyways so just keep going to work and doing normal things to keep the money moving, no point of losing a month or two of economic halt when we are already slated to get it.

Remember, this shit started in China back in late-Nov/early-Dec.

Give it sixty days now that it's out.

We don't have numbers for a lot of places which still haven't locked out the Pollution Goblins and are still moving them around.

But China wasted the first days-which is critical on severely culling a virus- just arresting others and putting them in crowded places, which is why it blew up. Global was already set to action the instant the news hit, just that the places you mentioned didn't follow suit (yet, I hope). I'm probably being very optimistic here, but I'm betting the numbers won't blow up so big like China.

Not sure about India, but I can guess why california is not fucking around; them dropping the ball would get Trump's baleful eye on them. It'd give him the excuse to have his people go in there and start sorting shit out, and once there they'd be able to start making changes that the silicon valley/hollywood elite don't want. They know that if they want to keep their peons in filth and squalor and ignorance they have to make sure this is handled in such a way that it won't cause the Orange Tyrant to bring the axe to their necks.

Unless I've missed something important, the Berry Amendment requires all uniforms and gear to be US made. There are a lot of exemptions, but textile products don't have any I'm aware of.

I think it should be noted that Sihanoukville is pretty much a Chinese Las Vegas. I'm left to actually wonder if there are unreported cases of WuFlu there and some of these unfortunate passengers might inadvertently pick up the virus on their way home. I hope not.
Macao has been shut down since Feb 5. No one will be able to gamble there until Feb 20.

To put this in perspective, the city does about 7x the volume of gambling annually than we see in Las Vegas. Just the MGM is losing $1.5 mil a day in expenses, and they're not even one of the big casinos.

Between all businesses in the city, this is probably costing somewhere on the order of $300 M for the 15 day period. That's on top of depressed revenue from December onwards.

While the business will return, Q1 is going to suck.

SAN DIEGO — In a race against the clock, a San Diego lab is scrambling to get a COVID-19 vaccine out and on the market. As the days go by, Inovio Pharmaceuticals is getting closer to releasing the desperately needed vaccine against the deadly virus.
Inovio Pharmaceuticals, which is located in Sorrento Valley, has also created a vaccine for the Zika virus, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and the vaccine for Ebola.

Dr. Trevor Smith, who is the director of research and development at Inovio, said, "It's something we are trained to do, and the infrastructure is here and the expertise is in house."
When Chinese scientists released the genetic sequence on Jan. 9, Inovio researchers got to work immediately and within 3 hours they had a vaccine for coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it is now being referred to.
"We have an algorithm which we designed, and we put the DNA sequence into our algorithm and came up with the vaccine in that short amount of time," said Dr. Smith.
Tens of thousands in China have been quarantined and continue to suffer from the virus. That’s why scientists at Inovio Pharmaceuticals say they feel the sense of urgency to get the vaccine out.
The vaccine has been tested on mice and guinea pigs. It will next be tried on a group of human patients.
Scientists hope the vaccine will work like a piece of biological software. In other words, the vaccine will give the human body instructions to create the proper attack in the form of T-cells and antibodies against COVID-19.
If all goes as planned, the vaccine could be made available to the public by early this summer - which would be a record time frame for Inovio Pharmaceuticals.
Currently, an Inovio Pharmaceuticals lead researcher is in Sweden meeting with the World Health Organization to come up with the best plan of attack against COVID-19.

Pollution Goblins BTFO by the Hamburger Kingdom.

Edit: Of course Africa and Asia and the EU will be given it for pennies on the dollars while the Hamburger Kingdom has to pay ten times what they should. So... tie?

Travelling family are back but incubation period is not over. Two major\one minor airport(s), 6 flights, I'm seeing them tomorrow. Can't wait.....

Tell them right off the bat that you are not feeling well and think that you are coming down with a cold/flu and that you are being extra cautious. Wear a mask when you pick them up. Even just a common mask found at the check-in area of most Dr offices. It is better than nothing. Also bring hand sanitizer with you and use it after you hug/shake hands. Do not touch your face. Don't take time to visit and get their stories, claim you're feeling poorly. Wipe down surfaces of your vehicle with alcohol wipes/Lysol when they disembark, especially door handles, etc. If you are really paranoid, send an Uber/Lyft to pick them up. With a history of being a germaphobe (not a bad phobia to have btw) they should not question your caution. If they call you on your WuFlu fear, admit it and own it.

If you live with said family members, take extra precautions. Glove up or use clean paper towels when opening common doors, turning off/on faucets, flushing toilets, lifting toilet seats.etc. Sanitize the shower/tub before you bathe. Do not share meals. Sanitize all kitchen work surfaces and pots,pans/utensils before you prepare/cook your meals. Keep to your room as much as possible. If family members are amenable, remind them to cough into the crook of their elbow and not into their hand.

Good luck, and I hope all your family members and yourself stay healthy!

Edit to add: Every 6 weeks I pick up a family member from the local airport. He works all over the world and flies thru many airports. I have used these precautions for 4 years and not picked up any bugs.

So, what is the total number of cities quarantined in China? I remember 16 or so about a month ago, but that has to have been increased since then.

I was referring to Sihanoukville, where the unwanted ship was finally able to dock. You're right about Macau being the OG Chinese Las Vegas, I should have worded it differently, my bad. But Sihanoukville in Cambodia was also turned into a Chinese gambling town thanks to the Belt and Road initiative. A quick search shows that there was a WuFlu patient there from China who made a recovery. Hope there aren't other victims there.

Riders on a New York City subway found themselves on the receiving end of a coronavirus prank that resulted in a bit of drama.

In a now-viral video posted on Instagram, two men are seen sitting inside of an MTA subway car while wearing white hazmat suits, masks and gloves.

Passengers on the car are seen either smiling in amusement or staring in apparent confusion as the two men casually ride the train. One of the men is holding a clear container with “warning” written on it, suggesting its liquid contents are potentially hazardous.

“Is that coronavirus?” one person appeared to say in the background.

“That’s not kool-aid,” another passenger said to the men.

As the man holding the container begins to open it, some passengers begin to move away. Within seconds, the man in the hazmat suit slightly gets up from his seat and pretends to fall to the ground -- spilling the unknown substance all over the floor.

Hysterical passengers, most of whom appeared to understand the stunt was all a hoax, began to flee the area to avoid contact with the liquid.

“Gotta love nyc!!” an Instagram user commented on the video.

“If your dumb enough to believe thats how they would travel with it you deserve to be tricked,” another person wrote.

Not all Instagrammers thought the stunt was funny.

“This was really stupid to do. Someone is looking on getting hurt. People would do anything stupid just to get views,” someone commented.

“This could of hurt someone by everyone running or someone scared enough to have a heart attack. Shame of these guys for thinking this would be a good prank,” someone else said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the number of people diagnosed with coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has reached 45,171 globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). So far, there have been more than 1,100 deaths.

In Wuhan China, they have about 8000 people in critical condition at about 70 clinics or hospitals. They are likely past their capacity to provide adequate care to critically affected people. Outside of China, they are still able to provide an overabundance of care to every single suspected case. Once containment breaks, and people are being infected at rates along the lines of tens or hundreds of thousands daily, then the death rates will skyrocket.

I'm a pansy-ass city dweller, but I've lived through two major earthquakes and their respective aftermaths (Loma Prieta in '89; Northridge in '94), during which there were significant disruptions in supply chains and utilities/sanitation, so I'll throw in my Pansy-ass City-dweller Doom Prepper Lite advice.

I've previously made other comments in which I recommended always keeping extra non-perishable food and basic cleaning and hygienic supplies on hand--stuff you already eat/use on a regular basis, just more of it. I keep my food stash rotated, so none of it has a chance to get old. My priority has always been foods that can be eaten with no or minimal cooking/heating, because it's just fucking easier that way. And forget doing dishes; paper plates/bowls are the way to go, and keeping a stash of them in the back of a cupboard is worth it.

In my own case, as a single person with no kids but a shitload of cats, I've always tried to keep enough food on hand to keep myself decently fed for a month, and the animals fed for two months. My reasoning behind that is that in a truly massive catastrophe, providing human food aid is likely to be a priority, but pet food isn't.

That's actually far more supplies than I've ever needed; after both earthquakes the supermarkets were able to restock very soon. But I will tell you this: when the shit hits the fan, knowing you're totally covered as far as keeping yourself and any dependents fed takes a HUGE weight off your mind. There will be a lot of shit to deal with in the days and weeks to come, and having that one basic thing covered gives you the brainspace to focus on other matters. And while telling other people, "Oh, hey, I'm totally set and have tons of food on hand!" is a bad idea, being able to give a bit of extra food you've "scrounged up" to a hungry neighbor during a crisis is a good thing.

What I don't have: lots of bulk dry ingredients or an extra freezer full of food. If the power goes out, a freezer is useless. Rice? Lentils? You've got to cook that shit, which requires a safe environment in which to do it, a safe heat source, clean water to cook it in, and water to wash the pot afterward. Cooking them takes time and attention which may be better directed toward other matters. Fuck that; I can eat refried beans, chili, or tuna straight from the cans, with crackers, for days or weeks on end and be content with it. Such is the power of my autism.

Repeat after Uncle Johnny: Nobody is going to come save you. Nobody is coming to help. You are on your own.

So, make sure you have water. Recommended is 2 liters of water a day. You can go shorter if you don't move much, but if you are mobile and active, two is a safe bet. When I was in the Gulf I once had to make a canteen last three days. Spoiler, I drank my own piss on Day Three. Why? Because I wanted to fucking live, just like you do now, so let's avoid having to drink out own piss, shall we, boys?

You need 8, 8oz bottles per day. Let's go with: Wal-Mart

That's a 40 pack of 16 oz bottles. That gives you 4 per day, for 10 days. You need 3 per person in your family if you go bare bones. (I personally would go 6, but I'm a turbo-sped about this plus you can use it for cooking, which is something EVERYONE seems to forget when doing their water consumption estimates)
I buy Crystal Geyser bottled water in gallon jugs, and have two dozen jugs on hand at all times. They're only a buck apiece, and the empty jugs can be used to go get fresh drinking/washing water from another source, should it come to that. As with food, I rotate my water supply, using one jug a month and replacing it with a fresh one, writing the purchase date on the cap with a Sharpie. I've got a dozen empty jugs hanging on a rope in my garage, plus a couple of five-gallon plastic water-cooler jugs I scavenged, and those can all be filled from the hose right after an earthquake and used as bathing/washing water. If I need a smaller vessel to carry water, I'm like every other resident of my eco-conscious, evangelical-progressive city in that I have more reuseable plastic water bottles than I know what to do with. So I'm set.

I also recommend, if you have the money for it, the following:
Lemon Concentrate (Adds flavor to water and can be used in cooking)
Mio/Extracts (Flavored water/Popsicles)
Lime concentrate (Adds flavor AND avoids scurvy)
Coffee (Tastes great AND has caffeine, also a good trade good to soldiers)
I've always got a couple of cases of sugar-free Monster on hand, but if it's just caffeine I need to stay awake? I've got a jar of 200mg caffeine capsules. Taken with 200mg of l-theanine, the jitters are pretty much nonexistent.

Now, you're going to need something. We're assuming 45-60 days of "I'm from the government, I'm not here to help" going down. We'll also need to consider power, water, sewage, cable, internet failing.[...]

If you can afford it, a chemical toilet. If not, well, listen close to Crazy Uncle Johnny. First of all, your prep.[...]
I lived in San Francisco during the quake in '89, and while electricity was back on within 72 hours in my neighborhood, and we still had water, the sewer line from my building out to the street collapsed, backing up sewage into the basement. Man, I was glad to live on the fourth/top floor, because some motherfuckers were dumb enough to keep flushing their toilets even after it became apparent there was a problem, adding to the mess in the basement--and the ever-growing miasma on the lower floors. It got really dire by the end of the first week, and didn't get cleaned up and repaired for nearly three months post-quake, during which I moved out. But for the short time I remained I did at least get the toilet situation figured out.

As you said, I shut off the water, emptied the toilet, and lined it with doubled-up kitchen-sized trash bags (because no way was I risking the failure of one bag). But I only used the bag in the toilet for shit. For pee, I used a 2-gallon bucket with a lid, which I carried downstairs and dumped into the storm drain at least once a day. (I was not the only person in my building doing this.) Anyway, with poop, I simply covered it with cat litter. I had just bought a new 25lb bag of Jonny Cat the day before the quake, and still had part of the previous bag left; things would have got ugly quick without it. The litter covered the poop and acted as a desiccant; the stink wasn't all that bad because I wasn't adding pee to the mix. I could get away with replacing the bag every other day, and I threw the used one in the dumpster downstairs (which ended up being another nightmare because garbage pickup fell way behind schedule).

All right, you're wondering about how you're going to cook.

Buy the old "home on the range" percolating tin coffee pot. Buy 2. Also buy coffee filters, because you can use them to filter water from debris (not chemical contamination) and works good for rainwater.
Being a cityfag lefty, I already have a French press for coffee, and an immersion heater that plugs into my car's cigarette lighter so I can quickly boil just enough water to fill it. I'm on the road a lot, and that little water heater has saved me from so much shitty gas-station coffee; it's also made coffee possible on a few mornings at home when we've had blackouts due to high winds knocking trees into power lines.

Oh, and hey, one more thing--it's always a good idea to keep emergency cash stashed away, just in case power goes down (even if it's just for a day or two, such as after severe weather). But if you decide to do that, include a lot of small bills. You may need to buy something off somebody else that they only want a few Freedom Shekels for, and if all you have is twenties, and they don't have enough cash on them to give you change, it's a pain in the ass. Or if you get into a store and their cash registers and credit card processing system is down along with the lights, you can still make purchases. So keep lots of $1 and $5 bills and a few $10s, rather than a bunch of $20s.
