Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

So we're finally starting to see curfews and full blown lockdowns. At this point, I won't be suprised if the USA closes its boarders and declares large sections of the country under quarantine.

Mass scale quarantines in the states will be one massive shitshow like never seen before. Social order in a few areas WILL break down. It's not really a matter of if but when now.

Boris Johnson has told everyone in the UK to cancel all non-essential contact with others.

Boris Johnson plunged Britain into an extraordinary lockdown today - urging everyone in the country to stop all 'non-essential' contact with others.

The PM warned that the coronavirus was now in a phase of rapid spread across the UK, with London seeing a particular surge, and it was time to take radical action to stop the NHS being swamped.

Everyone should avoid contact that is not absolutely necessary - with restaurants, bars and cinemas and travel off limits, and an end to large gatherings. Admitting that the squeeze could last 12 weeks or even longer, Mr Johnson acknowledged he was 'asking a lot'.

Entire households should self-isolate for two weeks if one person has been showing symptoms, and older people should prepare to stay away from risks for months to come. He said that meant 'you should not go out, even to buy food or essentials'.

But unlike New York - where all bars and restaurants have been compelled to close by 8pm local time tonight - Mr Johnson said he would rely on businesses and Britons to follow guidance.

Mr Johnson also said he was not yet ordering schools to be closed, saying he still believed it could make matters worse.

At a dramatic press conference in Downing Street, as the UK coronavirus death toll spiked to 55, the PM said: 'If necessary, you should ask for help from others for your daily necessities. If that is not possible, you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies.'

'Now is the time for everyone to stop non-essential contact with others and stop all non-essential travel. We need people to start working from home where they possible can. You should avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues.'

In a special plea to the capital, Mr Johnson said people there were at the highest risk. 'It looks as though London is now a few weeks ahead... it's important that Londoners now pay special attention to what we are saying about avoiding all non-essential contact.'

The moves - unprecedented in peacetime - quickly drew demands from MPs for guarantees that businesses will be propped up financially during the crisis.

The breakneck developments came amid growing criticism of the UK government's response, which has looked increasingly out of step with that around the globe.

The World Health Organisation earlier condemned the ditching of testing for those with mild symptoms, saying it meant countries were trying to 'fight a fire blindfolded'.

Recap: Michigan has banned assemblies of over 250, closed K-12 schools, and closed hospitals to visitors (except parents of minors and relatives of the dying) and non-essential staff, all until Sunday, April 5. Prisons are closed to visitors until further notice.

Our business is very much non-essential but it's also non public-facing; in addition to all of our vendors being active and orders being taken, so we'll be running as normal.

So whew, I ain't going without a paycheck at least.

Sucks about my yearly free birthday buffet though. :( Be safe out there, Kiwis.

After much exceptional indecision and delays, Malaysia finally announced a full "lockdown" as well. (Restricted movement is the term used here).

About time too. Took only being the SEA country with spiking cases to trigger this.
According to relatives in Malaysia, that's because a large mosque full of headbangers got infected, became too much to control.

On another point, on to my ever continuing quest to inform people about my favourite Mediterranean country - Malta. Today they hit 30 infections, including the first reported case of local infections (curtosy of pasta niggers not doing as they have been told). In response the PM has...
  • Increased the fine for breaching quarantine to €3,000.
  • Issued an order for all restaurants, clubs and pubs to be shut after 2359 tomorrow.
  • Stated that if anyone is found intentionally infecting people they will be thrown in prison.
  • Said that if numbers still climb then everyone is under house arrest for "more than 3 weeks".
As someone who is stuck here atm, I have never seen such discipline and preperation by people here. They are practicing social distancing - 1 to 2 people inside a shop, they are bleaching and sanitizing everything. I paid using my card and they wiped it down with alcohol sanitizer, I go to the local supermarket to complete my stocking up and they have someone there at the entrance sanitizing everyone's hands and baskets and people mopping isles with bleach and cleaning lift buttons, everyone has prepared and is working from home. Guess that's what happens when you have hundreds of years being under siege, you develop this "hunker down" mentality.

RI, USA:
  • Beginning on Tuesday, dine-in food and beverage service will be shut down for all restaurants, bars, coffee shops and other businesses in Rhode Island until Monday, March 30, Gov. Gina Raimondo announced.
  • Raimondo and Alexander-Scott also directed Rhode Islanders not to hold or attend gatherings of 25 people or more, saying people should be avoiding “non-essential crowds.”
  • Also speaking at Monday’s briefing, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza announced the Providence Place mall will be closed until further notice starting on Tuesday. Raimondo also urged mayors with malls in their communities to shut them down.
MA, USA:
  • Gov. Charlie Baker on Sunday ordered all Massachusetts public and private elementary and secondary schools to close for three weeks, as public health officials announced there are now 164 coronavirus cases in the state.
  • Other actions announced Sunday include limiting the size of gatherings, restricting where people can eat at restaurants and who can visit hospitals and nursing homes, and expanding when people can file for unemployment -- the outbreak is expected to have a deep impact on the economy and jobs market.
  • Baker said the three-week suspension of educational services is out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of children and school staff and given the evolving data regarding the cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The school closures go into effect Tuesday and will remain in place through April 7, the governor said.

Canada is now closing it borders to everyone except Canadian citizens, permanent residents, air crews, diplomats or US citizens, the later being "for now". Nobody showing symptoms will be allowed in. Not they said they cannot ban Americans because the countries are so intertwined economically that it would disrupt supply chains for food and other essentials.

Michael Bryant, executive director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, said barring Canadians from flights home because they exhibit symptoms effectively strips them of their right to re-enter the country. He said the government's decision could be unconstitutional, and that he would consider mounting a challenge.

"It's a fundamental right, the idea that you can come home," he said. "If you're a Canadian, it's a fundamental right. You should always be able to come home under any circumstances."
As much I love my civil liberties, I love not die more, and having my friends and family not die is a bonus. That should outweight the right to come home, methinks.

Note Trudeau said on March 5: "Canada won't ban foreign travellers arriving from countries grappling with COVID-19 outbreaks, adding that "knee-jerk reactions" won't help to stop the spread of the virus." That aged well.

I can understand pharmacy and food store. Pet store and bank and post office , sure.

But fucking barber and laundry? Really? People have no washing machines and scissors over there at home?
Come on,now, it's 2020! We've specialized our roles in the modern era. You can't possibly expect someone to know how to both wash clothes AND cut hair AND whatever their day job is? We all have a very narrow, specialized niche to fill and we could never know anything out side of that. Some of us full time twitch fortnite streamers don't have the luxury of learning how to wash our own shit-caked undies or shaving our heads with a #6 clipper. That's impossible!

Nothing wrong with bringing your citizens back and sticking them in lockdown. Trudeau is a moron though.

It's gotten worse.

Gatherings of 50 people or more are now temporarily banned in Michigan in an effort to limit the spread of coronavirus, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Monday evening.

The new restrictions go into effect 9 a.m. March 17 and will remain in place until 5 p.m. April 5.

Exceptions include health care facilities, workplaces not open to the public, the state legislature, mass transit, the purchase of groceries or consumer goods, and the performance of agricultural or construction work.

Dunno if there's anything else our Karen-in-Chief could have actually done.
