Why can't, Trump veto or seize full power in times of need / survival and just sign what he proposed first, i know we are in democracy but Dems are really fucking around and making it a carnival when it's really coming to gambling with people's live now, i don't think he would be seen as impopular if he got the paper through in the form / shape it was before they edited it up for their personal gains or just to fuck around, to the contrary.

Can't he invoke state of national emergency or something that gives him the right to push that help through ? Come on...
No, he cannot. He is the president, not a dictator, and the system is specifically set up to prevent a president from doing that. If that was possible, it would have been abused to hell and back, and we would not be a democracy anymore. Even FDR needed the cooperation of congress, the DOJ, and state and local governments to get his plans to work. He didnt just will them into existence.

What you are talking about WAS present in roman government, and it was called the dictatorship, to be used in times of crisis, a position decided on and appointed by the senate. It worked perfectly, until one asshole refused to give it back (Ceaser). This played a part in why the US does not have such a provision.

I keep seeing people hand waving H1N1 like it was nothing based solely on statistics. I had a close relative catch it a few years ago and I had to watch them spend three weeks on a ventilator and nearly two months in the ICU with multiple chest tubes. They survived, but they're stuck using an oxygen machine for the rest of their life. Much like turbo bat aids, a lot of the survivors have permanent damage from it. H1N1 was nowhere near as contagious as this shit, either. Several of us were around them the whole time they were sick and never caught anything.

Based on the WH briefing that just ended, it sounds like Trump's pushing for quarantines to end much sooner so that businesses can get up and running again. The economy's fucked either way, I can't imagine this will help "flatten the curve" any.
It sounds like the president said that after the 15 day plan has concluded they will analyze the situation and decide if they want to extend the plan or start returning things to normal. What the fuck is unreasonable about that? You have to take stock at regular intervals to see what is working and what is not. It sounds responsible, not horrifying.

No shit the president wants things to return to normal, don't we all? But Trump straight up said that they would decide which direction to go at the end of the initiative. Why are we stopping the presses over this?

This may have been asked before and I missed it, but does anyone know the reason OG SARS didn't spread to the extent of this current virus? SARS has an r0 of 3, so it seems to be on par with what they estimate for this one (if not higher) so what stopped it from spreading as widely?

H1N1 has the possibility of turning bad. over the course of 2009 and the first two months of 2010, there were 257,000 hospitalizations for H1N1, ~12000 direct deaths, and 48,657 pneumonia deaths directly linked to H1N1. This was out of 57 million infections.

Now what is interesting here is the number of pneumonia deaths. That would push the total death toll in the US to 60K. 15-20% of hospitalized patients needed ICU care. "The rate of ICU admission among hospitalized patients infected with the H1N1 virus was 39.6% (19/48), which is 50% greater than the previously reported rate of 20–25% during the 2009 pandemic influenza season " Also, a total of .45% of H1N1 infections required hospitalization. Now how does cornavirus stack up?

the percentage of Covid-19 patients who need to be hospitalized (5%, reflecting the fact that most people have only mild or moderate illness); the percentage who need to be in an ICU (2%) or on a ventilator (1%); and the length of stay for each of these three. This is based on the assumption that 15% of coronavirus cases have been detected, the actual % could be far lower.

Hospitalization: Corona 5%, H1N1 0.45%
% of hospitalizations put in ICU: Corona 2%, H1N1 20-25%.
Deaths: Corona ???, H1N1 0.1%

So, at least so far, we see that coronavirus puts way more people in the hospital then H1N1 did, but H1N1 sent a larger percentage of those hospitalizations into the ICU then coronavirus has. So, if you were hospitalized for H1N1, your prognosis oddly looked way worse then Coronavirus. Now, these numbers could rapidly change for coronavirus, the estimations will not be accurate until we have widespread testing. I think it is endlessly optimistic to think we have detected 15% of all cases when only some of the hospitalizations are being tested in so many parts of the country, and would put the educated guess for total cases detected at under 10%. Still, even if the detected percentage is much higher then 15%, the ICU rate for coronavirus seems a lot lower then H1N1 was, but Corona is putting way more people in the hospital then H1N1 did.

It's also notable that the H1N1 totals took place over the course of 10 14 months, which is why italy is being utterly overwhelmed, as all their cases have hit in the span of 3 weeks.

EDIT: Time math

66 cases confirmed in NZ Sunday, 155 today. Horseface Ardern's pathetic 'voluntary quarantine' achieved absolutely nothing, as one would expect.

Liquor stores are being forced to close around the country. One saw a 1800% rise in sales after horseface put her too-late not-really-a lockdown in place.
An idiot said:
"We understand that consumers want to ensure they have stocks in hand for the four week isolation period, but a rush on product is not going to help anyone."
Good advice if you're already stocked up. Not so much if you were caught unawares yesterday by the fact that you only had one day to shop for four weeks worth of liquor. I mean, they shouldn't have trusted horseface to stave this off, but not everyone is going to want to spend all that money if they don't have to. I'm all prepared but I might have to drop by one later, take some pictures.

The police are also going to force gun stores to close during the lockdown, even though it's the perfect time to go hunting or fishing. So people are having to stock up in bulk there too.
The queue got longer after the doors opened. Photo / Supplied

Some useless poof with a shop near to Auckland's Gun City outlet had a bleat to the pigs, who showed up to harass shoppers.

OG sars didnt spread easily and was much easier to predict its spread and symptoms. It also didnt spread asymptomatically, so isolating anyone with symptoms effectively choked it out in a very short time period, whereas corona just spread everywhere before begin detected.

They haven't got shit done in years and both sides are shoving unnecessary shit into the bill because they have to pass it soon. They are trying to get 4 years of haggling done in a week. It's pretty simple pause rent, mortgages and this year's property taxes. Then pull a Andrew yang and ubi until further notice. That will keep people in home and fed while they figure out the rest.

Well... hope you are all doing well. Let's take a minor left turn to irreverence. I had a surreal moment today thanks to this thread.

Someone posted something about Joe Biden and my brain smashed the brake pedal to the floor: "Holy shit I completely forgot there was an election happening."

Is that still happening? Are these guys campaigning? What the fuck are those poor schmucks Biden and Sanders doing right now while their opponent is doing daily press conferences?

Biden is held up in his home doing god knows what. Bernie has been doing daily live streams and rasing money for various charities to combat the virus.

It would be nice if one person from Congress proposed that they don't deserve to get paid because of all of this. Just one. It just would be nice to hear.

We all know that will never ever fucking happen, though. Congress can toy with the lives of other people's incomes, but never theirs. They keep rewarding themselves with raises, of course.

I wish life was more like a Frank Capra movie. Boy, do we need a Mr. Smith right about now.

You know that GIF of the fat girl eating icecream and crying with makeup, snot, tears, and slobber running down her face?

That's Biden and Sanders right now.

I don't think the arts is where 600 million should go at the moment. How about giving that to something related to researching a certain virus? Crazy idea, I know.

I dunno, instead of giving and extra $600 million to the arts above what we already do, why not just give a million of the poorest unemployed another $600?

Oh Shit! forgot this

This is the hottest, spiciest, most exceptional of takes and I love every second of it. Just perfect.

Word to the wise if you start seeing army and military contractors show up around your neighborhood this usually indicates incoming regional destabilization in the area. Considering the circumstances it will most likely be caused by temporary supply shortages which will lead to an increase in crime like rioting, robberies and looting if you notice this, it is probably a good idea to get what you need ASAP and take it easy at home for a while.
