Having treatments and an effective vaccine would not be unique to this virus. It's not either/or.

Added to that is politics. Politics in the medical/academic arena have dramatically changed how people view the science.
An anecdote/formal complaint example I saw recently (with specifics changed/obscured) -
A female (POC) biotech lab researcher had a cup of coffee thrown on her on Thursday last week by a colleague (Male, White, Gay).
This stemmed from an argument over tactical research - if treatments/protocols should be aggressively pursued vs finding a vaccine.
The female worker argued that in her home country, treatments/protocol have saved lives, because a vaccine had not manifested for it.
The male worker called her a capitalist pig, citing the fact that treatments were "shit Donald Trump would want".

This isn't a one off, I've seen an increase in them in the past 2 years. A man was fired for example, for referring to a zygote as female. Yes. You cannot assume the gender of biological matter now.

Everyone has lost their minds and has lost focus of the truth. The WHO are bought and sold. Fauci was putting PC politics before science just a few weeks ago, yet people are supposed to listen to him now?
Who can you trust if science is a social concept and not you know... a science?

I agree with your statement, the ideological divide in science has diluted the STEM field beyond repair. The worst time for a novel virus to hit, was when all of the bowing of the knee to the might of the PC thought police. This was half the reason why I did not pursue chemistry, a lot of that bullshit was starting to boil over back in 2014, especially in Canada. How come I switched over to EE control systems, less political, sinusoidal waves don't care about your ideological platform. The anecdotal statement you interjected also is disturbing, but not surprising considering that the hyper militant fags and trust fund kids typically end up graduating into the research facilities most of the time. This ideological gap is how come physics in itself is all fucked up right now, because of the lack of expanding beyond the current paradigm of the old think. Plus the gender bender muttering that has been allowed to occur in academia, ideological affiliations does not belong in the laboratory. The focus should be on the task at hand and performing solid analysis.

As well the incoherent amount of disinformation that has been lobbed out there over the last few months about this virus is mind boggling to say the least. These "experts" talk out of their asses to the sheeple, because the sheeple where too busy diluting their minds with bullshit to care about aspects of reality like biology or chemistry. We live in a world of two extremes with too many opinions, either it's the "fear porn apocalypse", or it's a "nothing burger". The containment efforts where botched as soon as they media began sticking their "experts" on the nations television screens. If anything the crisis has been manufactured since the beginning since our leaders ignored the calls from Wuhan, now we are stuck with the results of bad reaction time, and bad data.

2. The rest of the country is dealing with this shit too. New York City isn't the only city in the U.S. and it's not anyone else's fault that New York City made no efforts whatsoever to prepare for this or replenish any of their stockpiles. Every single state is supposed to maintain their own stockpile of emergency supplies before trying to rely on Federal stockpiles and New York didn't do this.

Basic skills like sewing are good to have. You dont need to be able to knock out a couture frock in a crisis but it’s handy to be able to fix stuff - a new zip to make a jacket last, fixing holes, replacing buttons etc. In normal times you could rely on a small business like a tailor to do this for you, but those places aren’t open now. A hand needle, thread, elastic, buttons and a few zippers will go a long way to letting you extend the life of clothing.
Ditto cooking, gardening (even with window ledges or a balcony you can get some things grown.)
Everyone should be able to do the basic make do and mend/ repair stuff and use basic tools. If you’ve got someone who can teach you more specialist stuff than go for it. I’ve never tried blacksmithing, I think you need strength (And a forge) for that, and I am a wee lassie, but I can weld , solder and do basic small scale metal work (heat, pickle and anneal type stuff.)

A small update from the rural South. I went to check on an elderly relative and take them some groceries yesterday afternoon.

The interstate highway was almost deserted. On the state highway there was light traffic. When I turned off onto county roads I didn't see another car the whole time. There are a few clusters of trailers that I pass that usually have groups of kids playing in the yards but they were nowhere to be seen. I guess everyone is taking the threat seriously there.

My relative told me that the CB and 11m freeband has had more activity locally than he's seen since the early 80s. Lots of farmers have been blowing the dust out of their radios and he said the local antenna guy/tower monkey has been making a killing replacing coax and broken elements/antennas. Seeing his mint condition Browning Mark IV and hearing the keyup ping took me right back to my childhood, simpler memories of simpler times.

I stopped at the gas station on the way back. The cashier was wearing an n95 mask and gloves like I was. She said the owner is a hardcore prepper who has a stockpile and was supplying them to all employees. It's good to see people still looking out for each other.
