My understanding is that game devs are typically badly underpaid and everybody’s strung along on the promise of bonuses and other profit-sharing schemes if the studio releases a hit. I don’t know whether this applies to ND specifically, but it’s a common practice in the industry. I remember a Blizzard guy talking about how a lot of their devs were living communally with an hour-long Orange County rush hour commute every day because that’s all they could afford.
There’s an entirely proximate possibility that some ND wagie did this because they were behind on their rent and bills and were counting on the bonus check when their game released with record sales.
It recently came out that Gearbox does this and they apparently got fucked over for Borderlands 3 bonus-wise.
