I'm calling bullshit about CA's unemployment system being down. But they just finished revamping a good chunk of CA government's old system back in 2019 and the project manager was one of the best from Livenation, who came over from being VP of network security (IRRC) and the person in charge of project design was one of the best from the low voltage industry and a major asshole when it comes to people not living up to expectations. So the idea that somehow their unemployment system fails after a 3 year modernization project doesn't add up.
I think the biggest issue with any state's unemployment system woes is the sheer volume of claims -- especially in the first couple of weeks after people saw their hours reduced or eliminated. Even if the designers performed stress testing before moving these systems into production (they did do stress testing, right?), I'm willing to bet they never considered the possibility that a pandemic would result in more claims being filed than they might anticipate or otherwise test for.
Why bother tracking deaths anymore now that they're just lying about it?
Because it's easy to take a raw death count and use it to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt about COVID-19. If people looked more at the rate of change in death numbers from day to day, they might realize the curve may flatten sooner than the media is forecasting -- if it hasn't already.
Johns Hopkins.
3,249,667 confirmed
232,936 Deaths
= 13.95% Fatality Rate
Thanks for proving my point about using raw numbers with no other context.
It’s also interesting that this doesn’t apply to the hundreds of thousands who lost their jobs completely under her authoritarian rules. Nope, gotta virtue signal and hand the gibs to those newly anointed saints of our society: the “essential” worker class.
I opined the same thing last night:
If non-essential workers have no prospect of returning to their jobs any time soon, shouldn't they also have the opportunity for free job (re)training to get them back into the workforce too?

Y'know, hearing stories like this constantly makes one consider Kiwi Farms to be an actual, verifiable and reliable journalistic site. I mean, everything here gets cataloged and verified, when was the last time you saw any journalist site do verification (other than perhaps PC tech sites).
Makes a person feel warm and fuzzy when you can see, damn near in real time, the very diverse crowd of individuals here, which makes it very fucking hard to get fake shit slid past. The newspaper effect tends to be strong, and I am glad we have Kiwis that can call out the BS.
Many times, I've noticed the site seems to post news and happenings before the mainstream media (MSM) reports on it. While the MSM puts its on slant on what it reports, the 'Farms discussion is far more open, free, and encompasses all opinions across the political spectrum. NGL, I often trust what's reported here more than what's reported by the MSM.
Give me a monotonous, well-dressed, to-the-point newscaster who tells me the who, what where, when and possibly why, if concretely known.
I, too, miss the days where newscasters reported the essential details and nothing else so people could form their own opinions. Now, the MSM takes it upon itself to spoon-feed opinions to people even if it means cramming them down people's throats.
Is Wayne County outside Detroit a great place to live?
This is one of those questions where "it depends" is an appropriate answer. There's areas near the westernmost border and the far northeast corner of the county that are well off and good places to live in for those able to afford the houses and lifestyle. Conversely, some of the communities immediately bordering Detroit on the west and southwest are changing for the worse as Detroit's lower-class element moves outward. Someone I know in one such community installed a doorbell camera on account of the increasing crime in that neighborhood. Upon reviewing the footage, it's a near-nightly thing to see to see random people wandering through the neighborhood at all hours of the night randomly casing houses and the neighborhood as a whole. Needless to say, the person wants to move out as soon as it's feasible.
Inb4 Dem govs are bolstered by this into attempting to become pety dictators and people beg Trump to kickstart the Boog to stop them.
It's funny how the Demoocrats are quick to find ways to block Trump's executive orders they disagree with while Democratic Governors feel they should be allowed to make similar executive orders without any sort of check and balance on them.
From now on you can assume any phone you use that was made post oh, May 2020 is spying on your location and associations 24/7.
It's stuff like this that makes some people want to keep their older smart phones and
not replace them with something newer/better unless they have no choice.
I'm going to try and use my free time until I get back to work to get my ducks in a row because hard times are ahead. Big spending on frivolous things is out of the question. When I hear that people have taken their Trumpbux and used them to get 4k big screen TVs, I have to wonder if there's any sanity left in this world.
The real push should be about telecommuting. Tons of jobs, especially in the cities, can be done telecommuting.
I'm thankful to be working from home right now with brief check-ins at the office three times a week. It's worked well so far. Still, the combination of COVID-19 and other factors are such that my job's future beyond summer is in question. So, I've also taken measures to get my ducks in a row and spend only what's absolutely necessary just in case the worst-case scenario happens.
