Honestly I avoided the new God of War primarily because it felt like it was taking too much unneeded inspiration from the first Last of Us, ironically enough. I'm one of the biggest fans of the original trilogy and the prequels you will ever meet (hell I even liked Ascension and I think it's seriously underrated), so everything about the new one made my skin crawl. It felt like it was sacrificing the original series' identity for the sake of stupid cinematic gameplay and trying to tell a "serious" story (that one quote from the developer about getting rid of the jump button because it wouldn't tell the story the game wanted pissed me off because it was getting rid of useful mechanics because it got in the way of the story, which is fucking bullshit).
As someone who enjoyed the original trilogy and legit thinks the first game had a great story, I just plain hated what the new game was trying to do because it wasn't God of War anymore. And a big reason why I didn't like The Last of Us was because I started to feel its influence creeping into games I love with the new God of War. I don't mind the existence of these kinds of story driven third-person action games even though they aren't my cup of tea, but when one of my favorite series gets corrupted by it, then there's a big problem. And it just felt wrong to do that with a series as angry and violent like God of War.
I agree Ascension was underrated.
I was skeptical of the new game like you but it won me over, I'd recommend you simply give it a try.
That said, I do hope they bring back some of the edge in the next game, namely the nudity.
