I think Chris knows he’s a tard, sadly.

(The happy tards always seem to be the ones blissfully unaware that they’re perpetually on life’s short bus.)

One of the earliest observers in known Christory, back in 2005, made this observation while watching Chris at the Alderman library in University of Virginia.

Surrounded by the "brightest" students in America, whatever that means, he sits in his chair and draws. 23 years old. I'm not sure he even graduated high school. In front of him texts of Plato, Faulkner, God, and Kleist swirl. Does he have the capacity to understand these works? Whether he can or not, I am not sure, but their is something in his eyes that realizes that there is a level of understanding and thought that he is unable to partake in. As he slumps lower and lower in his chair with each student he eyes reading or holding a book, he falls into himself- into the markers and colors on the page in front of him. (coffee idea) He seems intelligent enough to understand that he does not understand, and that is the hardest part of all.

We also had the numerous references in phone calls with Kacey and Jackie where Chris mentions how he’s “mentally slow” sometimes, or that Rocky tried to work with him on admitting that he’s retarded.

And now we see the head punches. (Which, granted, is probably also partly Chris trying to be zany and fun.)

So yeah. Chris knows he’s not all there, even if he sometimes blames it on “his autism”.

It’s probably also the one and only area in which I feel genuinely sorry for him. Being retarded but still smart enough to realize that you’re missing out, must be frustrating and hurtful.

But of course, he never really draws the correct consequence of that, and in the next sentence brags about being high functioning or a goddess or whatever.

Totally agree. To further expand on this, this is why Chris dropped the Magi-Chan body swap early on. Because, he couldn't keep up with the persona. He knows Magi-Chan is wise and all knowing and the superior father figure that can adult things. However, Chris couldn't do that in real life, and with Chris's mental state, he constantly breaks out of character and tards out. So to protect his fantasy, Chris quickly swaps back. Then comes Chris Chan (mama). Chris believes himself to be an intelligent goddess who is fated to save the world and merge and shit. But even he couldn't handle that. His constant tarding out, and the sense of powerlessness is also breaking his character as being a goddess, so with no choice, Chris decides to switch out to being Sonichu, which fits perfectly to Chris's intellect. This is why Chris pull the Sonichu act for so long, while praying for Mama ( the supreme woman figure that Chris always wanted to be/ Mother figure that he wants to coddle with because Barb is too old for that) to save him from reality.

I kinda miss the Magi-Chan phase, too. Magi-Chan tweeted so seriously, yet there was really no hope of concealing Chris's autistic idiosyncrasies. It made for fun reading.

The "first recorded statement" video where he pretends to be an exceptional purple vermin was one of the few times I busted out laughing from anything he's put out to recent memory (with the biggest exception being when he started threatening people as Mewtwo on Twitter). Loved the part when he "rolls" that cube on his palm like it's proof of his growing powers.

The way Chris describes his relationship with Bob during his date with Emily, you're right on the money. At that time, in his mid 20s, Chris stated that Bob should be obligated to take care of Chris.

I think that was true a few years ago, I won't refute that part of their relationship. But now, Chris tends to keep himself at a distance from Barb. His bedroom and "work" room are located downstairs while Barb is tucked into her space upstairs. For Barb's part, it was all about power and dominion over Chris. Now that she's both mentally and physically frail, Chris sees this and doesn't really pay her much attention, unless she takes the initiative and stresses him out about the finances, which are one of the reasons why Chris would tend to stay away from Barb and continue with his regularly scheduled head canon.

Worse than that. Barb has actively gas lighted chris in the past. There have been times where chris has tried to have agency over his own life and barb has fought back tooth and nail. She's threatened to kill herself over chris having the tiniest inkling of control. His obsession over his mother makes sense though. She's the only women that's ever been in his life, short of rocky and meghan. Both of which he has had troubling emotions for. For chris, women only exist in 2 roles. Mother and sex object. Barb is both.

His ideal of masculinity also makes sense because its tied to his own hatred of men. Men for chris are either patriarchal old school john wayne types(like bob) or competition. Its all classic symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder. Chris's constant desire for admiration is conjoined with his own inability to empathize with others. In addition to his autism. I think deep down barb is one of the few things hes ever cared about. Not out of any real empathy but rather from the strangle hold that she has over his life. Barb has created a world where chris relies on her so much that he likely could never find a replacement for her, even in his own mind. Despite chris gaining more independence as barb has become enfeebled instead of striking out on his own, he's regressed. I believe this is where the "Dimensional Merge" coping mechanism comes from. In the C-197 universe time stands still. Bob, barb, patty. They're immortal. Captured as idealized versions of themselves. Theirs no sickness and no death. It's a universe where chris is showered with admiration and praise. Free of any responsibility or consequence. Where he can be free to live as he chooses and have all of his dreams become reality. Ultimately this delusion will be broken. Most likely with the death of barb.

It doesn't sound like Chris matured much past the preschool years. Even his dependence on magical thinking to punish his enemies confirms this. What seems strange though is that he has the mental characteristics of a preschooler and toddler, but not much from a school-aged child or adolescent.

If you look at chris's earliest attempts at adulthood/masculinity it was his fathers examples that shaped his ideals of what he thought a man should be, much like most young boys. Strong, a provider, worthy of respect and admiration. When his love quest came to an end and he began his transition those traits clashed with chris's new found identity. Not just that but bob's conservative values. To bob the idea of his son dressing and presenting himself as a girl was likely the worst possible thing he could imagine. Worse than just being a homosexual. Chris wasn't just giving up his masculinity, he was placing himself into the subservient role of a woman. Much of chris and bobs earliest conflicts were nothing more than jockeying of position and typical childhood rebellion. It was later when bob began to lose control over the house(as well as his own body) that chris's real emotions began to surface. Bob was no longer the patriarch. The ideal for him to live up to. The leader of the household that chris had to constantly compare himself to and live in fear of his disapproval. He was free to shed the shackles of conservative manhood and embrace the homosexual/trans feelings hed likely been hiding for a long time. Chris's antagonism to bob is likely much deeper than just competition for barbs affections. For chris bob was everything he wanted to be for most of his life. Later when he wasn't living in denial he became everything he hated.

Agreed. I think that's what a lot of people misunderstand about gender. Different countries and cultures all have their own gender roles and tendencies. Not just that but gender is something that's constantly changing in our own culture. That's the reason that science has changed its approach to things like gender dysphoria. Instead of treating it as a mental illness that needs to combated. It's treated with things like HRT and assisted transitioning. According to the mayo clinic general symptoms of GD are:

• A marked difference between your inner gender identity and assigned gender lasting at least six months, as shown by at least two of the following:
  • A marked difference between your inner gender identity and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics, or anticipated secondary sex characteristics in young adolescents
  • A strong desire to be rid of primary and/or secondary sex characteristics because of a marked difference with your inner gender identity, or a desire to prevent the development of anticipated secondary sex characteristics in young adolescents
  • A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender
  • A strong desire to be of the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
  • A strong desire to be treated as the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
  • A strong conviction that you have typical feelings and reactions of the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
• Significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning

Chris didn't exhibit most of those symptoms until later in life. Obv its not impossible for people to experience GD later in life but Im not certain chris is a typical example. I dont believe that chris is smart enough to "pretend to have GD". But I do think its possible that he could be experiencing Transvestic fetishism. His desire to transition comes off as very sexualized. Especially when you take into account his failures at attracting the opposite sex. Perhaps sexualizing himself filled his desire for sexual fulfillment. Now the symptoms for TV are much simpler than GD but chris def fits both:

1. Individuals must be sexually aroused by the act of cross-dressing.
2. Individuals must experience significant distress or impairment – socially or occupationally – because of their behavior.

At the end of the day chris's sexuality is likely a mystery to even himself. You could spend all day diagnosing him but the end result will always be the same. "Extremely Mentally Ill".

To be gay, he'd have to be sexually attracted to men. He hasn't really demonstrated that. Chris's opinions about gay men softened from exposure to the LGBT community. Even then it took years.

A big part of why he hated men was jealousy - men took all the women and left him with none. And he also didn't have many male friends growing up and hung out with girls instead. Bob really fucked up by arranging girls to be "friends" with Chris - it screwed up his social development by weighing one gender over the other.

Chris didn't exhibit most of those symptoms until later in life. Obv its not impossible for people to experience GD later in life but Im not certain chris is a typical example. Agreed. I think that's what a lot of people misunderstand about gender. Different countries and cultures all have their own gender roles and tendencies. Not just that but gender is something that's constantly changing in our own culture. That's the reason that science has changed its approach to things like gender dysphoria. Instead of treating it as a mental illness that needs to combated. It's treated with things like HRT and assisted transitioning. According to the mayo clinic general symptoms of GD are:

• A marked difference between your inner gender identity and assigned gender lasting at least six months, as shown by at least two of the following:
  • A marked difference between your inner gender identity and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics, or anticipated secondary sex characteristics in young adolescents
  • A strong desire to be rid of primary and/or secondary sex characteristics because of a marked difference with your inner gender identity, or a desire to prevent the development of anticipated secondary sex characteristics in young adolescents
  • A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender
  • A strong desire to be of the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
  • A strong desire to be treated as the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
  • A strong conviction that you have typical feelings and reactions of the other gender or an alternate gender different from assigned gender
• Significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning

Chris didn't exhibit most of those symptoms until later in life. Obv its not impossible for people to experience GD later in life but Im not certain chris is a typical example. I dont believe that chris is smart enough to "pretend to have GD". But I do think its possible that he could be experiencing Transvestic fetishism. Perhaps sexualizing himself filled his desire for sexual fulfillment. Now the symptoms for TV are much simpler than GD but chris def fits both:

1. Individuals must be sexually aroused by the act of cross-dressing.
2. Individuals must experience significant distress or impairment – socially or occupationally – because of their behavior.

At the end of the day chris's sexuality is likely a mystery to even himself. You could spend all day diagnosing him but the end result will always be the same. "Extremely Mentally Ill".
