If you hire someone for money, they are not a fucking volunteer. They're a contractor.
Alex constantly uses this word to refer to his collaborators, whether they're actually suckers, erm, volunteers, or not.

Other words he constantly misuses, abuses, or overuses, and therefore people discussing the game also often do:
"V-slice"
"persona"
"senpai"
"yandere"
"work"
