Man I wish it was just a clone because I loved the previous two game, even enjoyed Dragon Commander a fair bit.
For me every part that is actually D&D drags the game down. Forgotten Realms again. That shit was played out 20 years ago and it's a crime nobody ever uses the other settings they have. Eberron is really cool, has one ancient MMO and a RTS. Planescape has tons to offer, the one game that uses it was pretty great but there's still tons to explore. Give me more Planescape, give me more Eberron, give me Ravenloft, give me Dark Sun. Fuck it, go crazy and give me Spelljammer. Rivellon as a setting is fairly unique in many ways and makes far better games than Forgotten Realms: another one I guess.
Fifth Edition doesn't have much to offer either, after getting the game I looked into it, there's just a lot previous editions had that isn't there, War Priest class being a big one for me. Doesn't help that unlike in Fourth Edition, which would've made for decent videogames although all we ever got out of that was bog standard Cryptic game with D&D words in it. But this is just boring. You can attack with sword or not attack with sword, the previous games has tons of abilities and a fair few starting out even so you always had a choice in what to do, even if you stuck with a few things that worked, cooldowns, terrain, enemy immunities and the like would keep you on your toes. This is exactly why when Wasteland 2 came out around the same time Divinity: Original Sin did it squarely lost in what I spent my time playing. But even Wasteland 2 had more choice than this, at least you still had one pool of action points to use on movement and shooting guns. Yeah, I get that that's just how D&D is with turns and actions but it's not fun when you've actually had it much better done in other systems, it's still fine for the tabletop I suppose if you can live with your casters being one pump chumps for a good while.
In conclusion passing on this game, Larian can and has done better and the next one will probably be completely my jam again.
