The Final Fantasy Thread

I'm not excited until I hear of what they might do to the game to make it better. Let's not delude ourselves here: The presentation and gameplay of FF7 are fucking ancient now, and adding a few cutscenes and prettier graphics won't do much to hide that.

I hope Square Enix takes this chance to make the world of VII a little more detailed and expansive, be it through additional content, gameplay features or backstory. If they squander the moment by just giving it a visual facelift, I will be sorely disappointed.

But hey, I could be wrong about this. Look at Mario.
The trailer looks fucking fantastic. That was a beautifully rendered modern Midgar. As for the combat, I'm honestly thinking they might just make it an ARPG like XV.

To me the most interesting part of this will be how people react. The fan boys who get angry at even the subtlest of changes, the people that never played the original and don't see what the fuss is about, the people upset it isn't 8 or 9, the people actually happy for a remake. Personal I'm glad and looking forward for more information.

I kinda called the remake, tbh. It was only a matter of time. But anyway, this is good news.

Yoshinori Kitase confirmed it himself when Crisis Core came out. He basically said "If we were going to remake 7 it would be on the next generation (our current gen) and as the 20th anniversary (2017) of the original game, as a way to bring the story full-circle." People ignored it because it was an interview in a Spanish-language publication that was then translated to English.

Where's my damn V remake. :(

I'm kind of annoyed at the thought this might be a PS4 exclusive.

yeah same, i still have my ps3 and barely played any games on it since im not that fond of consoles normally and also didnt planned to get a ps4 that soon either, but the ffvii remake together with bloodbourne (which made me quite curious as well) im pretty tempted to get one...

dangit
It tends to be that way with me. "Oh crap, this game looks really good and dammit I'm gonna have to get this console now." Then it's like opening the floodgates because of all the games I hadn't gotten because I wasn't quite hyped up enough to want to get the console, but now that I have it...

If they're willing to push out multiple sequels to a maligned game like XIII, I think anything is possible with Square these days.

The thing is, so many of the environments they used were already done because Square doesn't know how to make modern games so they had the art team working and making shit the entire time the game was being developed. They were just throwing shit they had sitting around on the counter together because they'd had their environment team making shit for eight years.

The people running Square are not good at this.

Don't worry; by the time it comes out in seven to nine years, you'll be able to get them cheap.

While VII isn't my favorite in the series, I certainly don't mind it getting a remake. The original game was great and all, but I wouldn't mind seeing the script getting a little cleaned up and perhaps re-balance the gameplay mechanics.

It's still a pre-rendered trailer. It has as much to do with what'll actually be in the game as the '06 trailer for Versus XIII FFXV.

Not if they value their lives. The fanboys would form a lynch mob.
Who cares what the fanboys think? Lots of those retards were fans of Advent Children, which means they have absolutely no ability to discern quality whatsoever.

There are plenty of games where turn based combat actually is a better option, but FFVII isn't one of them. Turn based combat works best when you have very dense, strategic, thoughtful combat as the games central mechanic; or you're limited by the technology of your time and have to compromise. FFVII was made during a time of very primitive hardware. The game's combat isn't terribly dense or strategic, and very much based on flash and whatever speed they could get with what they had. If you want strategy and dense combat, play FF Tactics.

I don't really like Tetsuya Nomura. I think he's an utterly atrocious character designer, painfully self indulgent, horrible with designing in a timely fashion, and an enabler of some of the most retarded video game melodrama in history. That said, I'm certain if he and the others working on FFVII at the time had the ability to make an ARPG, they would've done so in a second. He's turned every game he's worked on to a significant degree since Kingdom Hearts into one, and it's one of the few things he's never screwed up.

Why ruin a good thing just because things were different back in the day?

This pretty much confirms that the story will be different in some ways. I'm aware that the original had a awkward localization, so hopefully this turns out good.
I'm far less hopeful on this news. Square has never shown me they have any idea what made FFVII's story work. Made evident by the fact they even made Advent Children in the first place. There's a decent chance they'll pull a Star Wars: Special Edition on this.
