DOOM

Honestly I think more than anything I'm curious where they're going to go after this. Based on what Hugo's been saying and how one of the leaked Achievements is called "Rest Your Weary Fists - Kill the Dark Lord" it seems like this really is going to wrap everything up. Hugo did say though that this isn't the last Doom game and there's still other stories to explore in the universe. So maybe a prequel or something?
Maybe quake (and I mean the first quake) is gonna finally get a sequel now time to see if those weird white monkeys are furry or not

Obviously the lovecraftian shit
Intern : "Now the secret to fighting C'thulu is to not look it in the eyes..you will go mad if youd o."
Doomguy : "........"
Intern: "I guess..that isn't a problem for you..You are already mad already aren't you"
Doomguy *Ripps out C'thulu's eyes one by one*

Would we get the lovcraftian shit or the biomechanical shit?
Gimme my niggas the Strogg again, YES YES I KNOW everyone is tired of them but I just like the concept of them so much. Imagine blowing away a Tank with a railgun with today's tech; shit would be the most satisfying thing I tell you.

Been kinda itching to play some Doom again and currently playing The Way Id Did.

Apparently Eternal is kinda mixed with some people? I kinda wanna play it when I can get it cheap, but now I'm not sure.

Eternal's got a learning curve to it, and that's what trips most people up. It's got way more resource management than 2016 did, to the point the chainsaw's basically mandatory if you want to maintain your ammo. It also starts a bit slow because your ammo pool at the beginning is pretty low and you don't have any of the useful abilities like the ice bomb or dash. Once you get more weapons, increase your ammo pool, and upgrade some abilities, the game really starts to pick up and the game's intensity puts 2016 to shame. The middle to the end game is some of the best action I've seen in a shooter.

It really is a game that you have to give a little time and actually learn how it functions. It lacks the pick-up-and-play aspect of 2016, but its skill ceiling feels a lot more satisfying to reach. It's not gonna be for everyone, but at the same time learning how it works and pulling it off was immensely gratifying for me.

The mechanical changes are overall good once you get used to them, but there's a marked increase in platforming and cinematics which rubbed a lot of players the wrong way. If you liked 2016 chances are you'll get something out of Eternal. If you haven't played 2016, buy and play that first. Also, I recommend playing on Ultra-violence or above for optimal experience on either title.

2016 was pretty great. Much better than how these remakes usually turn out.

Kinda wished the map design was closer to that of the OG games, but hey, they’re not necessarily straight corridors either for the most part.

Main difference between 2016 and Eternal is that the former pretty much hands you the power fantasy, while the latter makes you work for it. Eternal did take some getting used to for me at first. Hell, the first Arachnotron you encounter kicked my ass because I was still playing it like 2016. Now I eat them for breakfast and they're basically no threat whatsoever.

Eternal really does remind me of a Souls game in a way in that when you first start it you feel like shit, but as you play, unlock everything and learn all the mechanics you feel like a god by the end. Having said that though I'm still pretty mixed about some of the stuff in the game like the Marauder and all the "this enemy is borderline invincible if you don't use the weapons we want you to in the way we want you to" mechanics they seem to be doing more and more.

Oh, and Eternal also has a lot more environmental variety, unlike 2016 which basically just alternated back and forth between Mars and Hell.

Marauder doesn't bother me nowadays, especially after looking at some combos on Youtube and practicing them. I think my favorite involves the Shield for how brutal it is:

Eternal has a learning wall; you will suffer until you finally realize and adapt to play exactly in the way Hugo Martin wants you to play the game. Afterwards it's a simple rhythm progression game.

The things I like about Eternal, I really like. The aspects that I dislike, I really dislike. But overall, it's really a very good game.

The low ammo system is very annoying and I find that turning off the ammo counter actually makes everything more intuitive as I'm less concerned about numbers and more about feeling. What looks like a resource management mechanic is actually a way of having cake and eating it: you have powerful movement and you can actually take out nearly every thing with very little effort, but you're forced to slow down every now and then to fuel this rampage.

You can see this in glory kills as well: they're very slow, even with the rune upgrade. Doom 2016 did Glory Kills better: Doom guy using his hands and feet to tear demons apart. Now, they give you a blade which Doom guy uses to very slowly tear into a demon.

Marauders are okayish, but once you've got your staple combo down, they'll feel very repetitive. The gimmick they gave it means that your enjoyment of them is dependent on how much of the marketing you've bought into. Most important aspect to fighting them: don't dash around too much. Stand your ground, AIM AIM AIM! And actually shoot at the right moment.

I still think the amount of platforming is bullshit. Maybe it's a throwback to DOS games?

Also, I like 2016's art style better. BUT, once you get to the Meat Hook, it's very easy to look past these grievances.

lol, OG Doom didn't have platforming. That shit is Half-Life onwards only. They did have sprawling maps with plenty of mazes, but that's also why they put in an automap.

Unpopular opinion the infinite ammo cheat makes the game much better as ammo management is the worst part of Eternal by far.

I meant the old DOS games in general like Commander Keen and Prince of Persia.

Oh, and continuing on the comparison of 2016 and Eternal, I think 2016's OST is superior.

I still don't like Marauders. I get what they were going for and I don't think it's invalid, but intentionally subverting your own game's mechanics means you have to meet a seriously high bar for good execution and the Marauder just falls a hair short. The constant need for mid-range zoning just doesn't feel as intuitive as it should. Not a game-breaking addition by any means, but they do detract from the game somewhat for me. I get the impression that they would fit perfectly into a souls-like.

Eternal is one of the most mechanically impressive that I have played in the genre so far. I liked 2016 because the pacing was perfect in the game, though I felt that the true potential of Doom was unlocked with Eternal. I love the old school Doom games as well, and the manner in which they translated that play style with the way the technology is these days, is very impressive. I have played a good variety of shooters and I will have to say that Eternal is one of the best ones I have played in the bunch.

There is a learning curve and I do agree in the beginning of the game, ammo management is a pain, so having to constantly chainsaw kill is a bit annoying. Though as the game goes on, especially when you get your weapon upgrades, and gauge your personal playstyle, it begins to translate very nicely. I played on Nightmare mode and I will have to say that the level of challenge is a nice change in the industry. It never feels cheap, it all is skill, and how well you understand the Doomslayers tool set.

Marauders are a bit of a pain when you first encounter them, though once you get the pattern down, they get a little easier to deal with. Though the thing that annoys me about them is if there was a bit more of a delay on the flash, then it would be a more balanced enemy. They managed to deliver traditional Doom in a modern Doom game. Which I hope that as the game ages, the modding community can really embrace it. It's one of those games that will age like fine wine, unlike other more traditional shooters. Just my POV, solid game.
