Danganronpa Series - aka Demented Animatronic Bear Gets People Murdered: the Game

No wonder the ending of danganronpa v3 was what it was;
and that epilogue implying “shirogane lied guys! We are innocent and perfect” is so ungodly crap. If audition tapes aren’t real, and they WERE just randoms who were kidnapped and forced to become fictional killing game participants…. then there’s literally no real dilemma? No purpose to the entire narrative? Nothing was truly their fault in that case, there’s absolutely no personal connection to the entire theme of the ending, about having to end Danganronpa and shut down Tsumugi and the audience for good. It’s just a really boring conflict honestly? DR1 and DR2 worked so well cuz in some way or another the cast WERE in some way ultimately responsible for their fates. They killed of their own volition. They joined the game willingly. Kodaka’s taking that away by sparing siahara, maki, and Yumeno and implying that just reeks of pandering to that fanbase after he had the bravery to just call them out on worshiping this franchise about very fucked up things in the final trial.
“Yumeno: So if no one’s watching, there’s no reason we have to die, right?
Saihara: No. We have to go through with this. Our deaths will change the world. If we die, this all stops.”

To me, that epilogue can go to hell, as far as I am concerned. It’s a contradiction that destroys the games themes in service of that fanbase.which is funny, because I feel that final trial was directly aimed at them.
DR1 though did lead to spin offs like Ultra Despair Girls and its anime. I've always felt DR1 was the only real killing game and DR3 was referring to DR2 onwards. DR1 and UDG though were the only games i really enjoyed the most so that may sway what i think.

I liked the part in Danganronpa 1 where the text written in blood was upside down, literally everyone sees that, including the player, then the game had the writer's Sue tell you that far later than necessary and all the other retards in the cast said she was a genious. Neatly foreshadowed how shit the rest of the game was.
For further proof, Ultra Despair Girls wasn't even a VN and that's the least liked.
It's an RE4 ripoff that ran at 18FPS on Vita when it came out, starring school grill against 9 year old edgelord villains, it's cringe as fuck relative to DR let alone anything decent and feels like shit to play. At that point it doesn't matter that it eg, has some nice puzzle-y gimmicks with combatencounters or has a better main villain than the first 2 games, it's done.

Never tried it on Vita it ran pretty well on PC. But yea it had some mini games and parts that were pretty cringy .

To be fair, 11037 was localized poorly. To the average Japanese player, this would come as more of a suprise, since not many Japanese out there are English speakers.
They didn't take into account that english speakers would instantly recognize that as a clue, especially when it's importance as a clue was brought up as a last resort.

I mean, the 11 is clearly an N that was cleaned up once they show it and the 3 always looked like an upside down E because it was squared not rounded. Even they'd be like "why would she write it like a digital clock? that's 4 strokes instead of 1 double curved stroke". The japanese are bad at english, they are not functionally retarded and blind. Unless DR is literally the first murder mystery anything they'd played/watched, then even japanese people would figure it out in 2 seconds.

And it's not like the rest of the game does better either. I wouldn't chalk this up for loss of meaning in translation, it's just badly written/designed.

With the trend of franchises being thrown off of a cliff due to bad endings, or just having bad later entries, I'm wondering how even with the mixed receptions to V3's ending, that it somehow didn't completely nuke the fan base. Compare that to say, shows like Game of Thrones and Lost, and games like Mass Effect 3, in which they all managed to completely nuke themselves out of relevancy with how they ended. The Star Wars DT, and The Last of Us 2, also come to mind with how they also nuked a lot of their fan bases by killing off established characters, while forcibly trying to ram new characters down the viewers' throats, to disastrous results.

Would it be because the Danganronpa series wasn't as mainstream as those other said franchises?

The difference is that the examples you listed pretended like their endings weren't pile of shit. While V3's ending is basically giving the finger to the fans, yelling fuck you and exiting the room. You can't really hate the balls it take to do that (and the series itself was never overly serious).

I consider V3's end to be kinda like NieR Automata except being more ruthless about it.

@capitalBBustard
I think the 11037 was only done because from the entire cast only Leon had an english name.

They should've changed the clue for the english version though ex. a which has ) ( near it which put together resembles a baseball.

Received the word that SONY will shut down the online stores for PS3, PSP and PS Vita. It turns out Danganropa had games for the PS Vita and PS4, and unsurprisingly they boosted up the prices for the games.

It’s just not fair right now. Though, how did one start off with Danganropa? Or if you’ve never played the PS games, can you get by by just watching the anime version alone?

Those skyrocketed in price awhile ago because they were tken off the vita and PS4 store due to NIS losing publishing rights and Spike Chunsoft going independent.

The PS4 collection is equally as expensive.

The news about the old playstation stores shutting down is a rumor with no evidence or proof found. But the DR games have been gone for at least since last year.

You could if you hate yourself even more than the minimum necessary to be on this site.
Just get them on Steam, they go on sale a bunch.

The Danganronpa anime is pretty bad, the first one abridges way too much content and the second one is just plain uninteresting half the time due to the way the plot is structured. At least the dub in that one is incredibly entertaining for all the wrong reasons, the script is full of terrible lines and outdated memes.

The best part is that you can totally pretend DR3 never existed and you'll be fine, 2 ended in an okay way to say that storyline is done until V3 did the thing

I just finished Trigger Happy Havoc, and I really liked it. Is it stupid? Yes! Is it well written? Not really! There were also many times when tidbits of information were thrown out of left field so randomly (HEY GUISE I ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES, HAVE YOU NOTICED I WEAR GLOVES?) it becomes obvious it will be pertinent information later. What I can say is the overall story was interesting and took some neat swerves, and the characters were all interesting. The trial mechanics were unique (although I felt a few times what I needed to use was obtuse), and in general it was a game that kept moving and the 20 hours I spent flew by. I think at the end of the day I prefer both Ace Attorney and 999 games, this kind of felt like a mix of those two franchises. I am about to play part 2, I hope it doesn't suck. Its a good game though.

I wish I never got into this dumb series, sure the games are cool and the characters are pretty interesting, it's just the fandom that drives me up the wall.

Yeah, most of the characters have a good design and the premise can be interesting. The soundtrack's lit too. But the fanbase is tumblr/twitter degenerate personified and they can fuck off.

Another thing i'd like to add is the dangaronpa 3 anime sucked ass and it was lazy that everyone got mindcontrolled thanks to an eyerape playing on a screen. I know the series doesn't take itself seriously at times and there's plenty of ridiculous moments but that was just a copout. And it seemed like they didn't know what to do with the characters thanks to the stupid twists there.

so I tried to watch the Danganronpa anime a few months ago and quit after like 3-4 episodes, when the protagonist gets accused of killing that one girl he knew and I got too frustrated to continue because that dumb faggot did absolutely everything possible to draw suspicion to himself, despite knowing the rules, and acted completely shocked that everyone was pointing out the obvious

I had the first game spoiled for me before it was even localized because a Let's Play thread on Something Awful brought in so many horrible newfags that someone bought an ad that just outright said who the killer was.

The Danganronpa fandom joining SA just for that Let's Play is also considered to be one of the major turning points for SA as a whole, as the forums got noticeably worse after that. Their fandom is so terrible that they managed to become a fatal infection on one of the largest forums in the world at the time.
