main characters you like in video games and why.

Cloud Strife:

Related to him heavily as a teenager. I always hated how Advent Children made him edgy. Dudes a total goofball at the end of the original game. "Everyone, Lets Mosey~"

Naked Snake/Big Boss:

I FUCKING LOVE THIS GUY IN MGS3. He's so fucking socially awkward, yet cool and composed. He's such a geek and yet such a chad, I don't think killing Ocelot is more of a paradox then that.
His downfall at the end of the game makes it all the more heartbreaking.

THANKS BOSS! :semperfidelis:

Racter from Shadowrun: Hong Kong
He's a post-humanist enthusiast who believes the best future for humanity is to shed our bodies and replace them with cyberwear and prosthetics so we're undying and immune to sickness. His natural lack of empathy is perfect in the cut-throat world of Shadowrun and he believes in the pursuit of a perfect future regardless of the morality used to achieve it.

He's an actual psychopath (sort of)
"There is no formal diagnosis of ‘psychopath’ in the DSM. But all the markers were there. I displayed a complete lack of empathy on the Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and I scored a perfect 40 on the PCL-R. A blood test showed that I had inherited a damaged gene that has been linked with aggressive behaviour, and the activity level in my ventromedial prefrontal cortex is vanishingly low." -Racter

At first this made me roll my eyes and think he was some generic, edgy bullshit, psychopath loner character but the longer you speak to him the more he starts to open up and you develop a bond and he's very open about his dream for the future and how he regards you and the team.

“Before I turned to the shadows, I considered myself a ‘prosocial’ psychopath. That is to say, I had the markers for psychopathy, and I expressed some of the expected behaviors. But I never killed anyone… at least, not until it became a job requirement. Now, I’m not so sure. I will admit that there is a certain thrill to our profession… it’s quite liberating, being paid to hunt and kill other men. But I only indulge in these appetites when I’m on the job, and I never bring my work home with me. People with my condition… my *advantage*… are not incapable of bonding with others. The only difference is that we do so on a cerebral level, rather than an emotional one. I enjoy our association, and I recognize the advantage in our being allies. I like talking to you. What better reason for us to be friends?" -Racter

He has a cool drone
1621169153425.png

Modelled after Koschei the Deathless. Endlessly upgradeable, shockingly good for an allies drone (looking at you, Blitz, your drone was shit and you were shit, it should have been you instead of Monika), he's self-repairing and has a direct link to Racter's brain as part of it's OS and effectively runs on his id, and acts on his base animalistic impulses. When it attacks and kills, it's not because Racter's ordering it to, but because he's allowing it to.

Overall Score: Best teammate/10

Oh look. Another vidya gaems thread I can use to piss everyone off with my love for the Earthbound series.

I have never seen a video game character that is both intensely beloved and intensely hated. Mention him on twitter and many, many fangirls will swarm your posts gushing over how tortured and pure he is. Mention him on a place like 4chan and you'll be flooded by seething anons who hate him and use him as a prime example of a Gary Stu.

My thoughts on this argument in a nutshell? Both sides are fake, gay and retarded.

Lucas has been horribly misinterpreted over the years on both sides. Yes, he's been through a lot of shit but most people tend to forget (or completely focus on the libtard aspect SJWs claim Mother 3 endorses and nothing else) that Lucas isn't an emotionally hurt loner who needs hugs 24/7. He has moments where he shows that despite being traumatised he's strong enough to be able to cope with general life. Those moments come back to haunt him every once in a while but each time he bites the bullet and keeps moving forward even if it hurts like hell. Dude even has the balls to give the player (who is seen as a more mystical, otherworldly force like god in the game) the theoretical middle finger and pull the last needle if the player selects No. Guy has some pretty fun PSI abilities at his disposal too.

As for the other side? Lucas is not a Gary Stu - not everyone in Tazmilly (or even the Pigmask Army) treat him poorly just because he's different, but don't agree with what he believes in either. In fact I'm going to commit blasphemy and say that he's partially responsible for letting Claus go to the mountains only to get torn to pieces - all because he was a spineless wimp who didn't know how to stand up to others. Lucas knows this and it affects him to the point where he wants to improve - even if he can never truly forgive himself for his sins - he can at least help try to make the world a better place.

That is why Lucas is my favourite MC. He's complex and reaches the end of the game a far, far stronger person than a lot of fans realise.

TL;DR - To be fair you have to have a high IQ to understand Lucas.

Cecil from FFIV because I’m a sucker for the whole “villain or reluctant lackey of villain finds redemption” trope

Garrett from the Thief series because I got into those games as a teen and his sarcastic, edgy badass characterization really appealed to me at the time

Might be cheating on this one since he’s technically an NPC, but he’s there with you from the very beginning of the game but Morte from Planescape Torment because there’s a lot of depth to his character that he masks behind the whole “sarcastic jerk” facade that gets overlooked. I find him one of the more fascinating and complex party members in the game

He's also goddamn hilarious too

Caim from Drakengard, because he's essentially a murderhobo in a game that goes out of its way to be as fascinatingly unpleasant as possible.

He's a bloodthirsty, mute, single-minded psychopath much like Doomguy, but unlike Doomguy, he has, at best, utter contempt for just about everything that isn't his sister or the dragon he makes a deal/merges life forces with to save his life at the start of the game - who, it should be noted, holds the same utter disdain for everyone, including the absolute nutter that serves as her lifeline. He murders conscripted child soldiers (over the objections of one of his paedophile party members), kicks annoying old men full-force in the face, and is so unflinchingly hell-bent on killing an entire empire and all of the crazy bullshit it throws at him by his fucking self that it starts rubbing off on the dragon. He forms such a potent murder-bond with the thing that he's more affected by her fate at the end of the game then by his own sister's death, and proceeds to become a villain in the sequel without changing a goddamn thing about him; all he wants to do is save his dragon, which means murdering everyone responsible, and god help anyone that gets in his way. He's such a goddamned force of nature that you don't even kill him directly: you kill the dragon instead, because that's easier.

Drakengard is a terrible game about terrible people, and takes no effort to soften that, but presents its cavalcade of insanity as straight as possible. There's something interesting about that kind of earnestness.

I like Geralt of Rivia a lot because he's a grumpy asshole who's already tired of your shit 5 minutes before he even meets you, and I identify with that.

I also really like Arthur Morgan because he reminds me of my grandfather a great deal. Not just in his mannerisms/overall bearing, but also because of his accent and the way he talks.

The funny thing is, Caim didn't start out as mute. He lost his voice as part of his pact with the dragon. Kind of an interesting take on the whole silent protagonist where his character is established only to become something that normally isn't given a characterization.

Drakengard is one of those rare games I would call beautifully flawed. If you look past the combat and obnoxious requirements for the final ending, you get a really unique game featuring one of the most vile and degenerate cast of characters out there. Minus the one kid who's sister was horribly abused while he got all the attention. That wasn't his fault.

Then Taro ends up making a game featuring one of the most wholesome cast of characters out there. Based on an ending from his previous game that involves Caim and Angelus going into the real world, fighting the last boss through a rhythm mini game and then getting shot down by jets.

Speaking of, I love how wholesome and kind Papa Nier is. Helps that his VA did an absolutely fantastic job.

Goro majima dude went through hell all for a blind girl that he ends up rejecting in the end when he learns that her doctor loves the blind girl and fought and nearly killed the most expensive assassin in all of Asia. And who can forget Rico GODDAMN Rodriguez the number 1 certified dictator remover in all of south America and not to mention has a grappling hook that bends the laws of physics on it's head

JC Denton is the funniest main character, unintentionally. They tried to make him sound all boring and monotone in every scenario so that the player could project themselves onto JC somewhat, but it just makes it stupidly funny whenever he talks.

Badass Biker who wasn't afraid of blowing North Korea/Venezuela up.
We always thought it was really funny that he was a juvenile delinquent from Arvidsjaur, a tiny town of 4,500 in the arctic. Looking at the police blotter the most recent criminal activity was someone driving 57kmh/35mph in a 50kmh zone, he was caught as a result of the police promising to crack down on these speed freaks. People are different up there.

I can understand their reasoning, that's also where the Ranger regiment is located and seeing a born and bred ice-spic in a game is always fun.

Definitely Rika Furude from Higurashi: When They Cry. She is an amazing character who never gives up no matter what. She is a very strong character and I love her so much

A bit of A cheat there considering it's more a "book in a game engine for delivery timing and music" than an actual full on traditional game, as well as the fact she's a more "main cast" kind of character rather than THE main character. I do agree though.

Now, the MAIN CHARACTER, Keiichi Maebara...
keiichi.png
He's also a likable guy. He's kind of fucking dense as hell and ends up wrapped up in all sorts of fucked up shit type situations. There's that one chapter where He's literally the only one willing to help his friend thats being brutally abused by her bitch ass coward uncle. Said uncle initially skipped town offscreen because he was afraid he'd be killed by a mumbo jumbo ass misfortune curse that most people just figured were secret mafia dealings and moved on with their lives over. Everyone's so caught up in the "oh well he's her legal guardian there's nothing we can do :( " mindset meanwhile keiichi's over here going like "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT WE LITERALLY HAVE EVIDENCE OF ABUSE?! BEAT HIS SHIT IN SEE HOW HE LIKES IT!" and then he proceeds to do the most anime ass screaming as he's chasing the dude through the fucking rain beating the shit out of him with a baseball bat that used to be owned by the guys nephew. Shit gets worse after that but it's less his doing and more a chain of misunderstandings. Due to this chain of misunderstandings he ends up thinking he has the power of god after the town he lives in gets fucking poisoned by toxic volcanic swamp gas fumes and proceeds to rot in a mental asylum cell. Thats only one part, too. he does more than just that but that bit kinda stood out to me.

Higurashi's got a really likable main cast of characters overall, really. It's really interesting and cool how it reveals more about both the characters and the overall situation of the setting through the diverging timelines and perspective shifts.
Apparently the new anime adaptation frames itself as a sequel despite literally just being the same shit but with one altered aspect of "the kid he was friends wth that was being abused was actuallY EVIL THE WHOLE TIME OOOOOOO" which is some dumb fucking shit that completely betrays everything that was built up in this thing in a manner similar to a lot of current year reboot clickbait fodder trash shit. I still have a part or 2 to go in the OG thing but from what I've heard from people more knowledgable on things like this I don't have to worry about being spoiled by that shit showing up because that's literally an anime exclusive plot point. I also found out via youtube randomly flooding my reccomendations with clips comparing both anime adaptations that despite neither being super accurate the new one seems to have lost all subtlety and has menacing inception horn ass music and glowing eyes happening during scenes that in the original were tense without any of that dumb shit.

Only spoilered this to save space, really. That, and it kinda goes off into unrelated shit.
Speaking of unrelated shit a month or 2 back i ran into some guy that literally looked like a real life Ooishi. I had to hold back my laughter because he showed up in a manner similar to how Ooishi just fucking shows up, it was fucking wild shit. Guy had the exact same clothes and everything, only difference being he wasn't Japanese lmao.
