Super disappointment thread

Btw: You known you can get Xbox style controllers for PS4, right?
Yeah, and you can get dongles/connectors that let me use the xbox elite controller. I just find it retarded that both companies don't offer both versions of pads.

I lost my PS4 when i split up with my ex. She got the PS4 and i got an OG xbone. Fucking womin amirite?

I agree with everything in this post. The kinect was and is, interesting tech, but Microsoft lack the ability to do good things with their good ideas, and it has plagued every department of theirs for decades.

Kinect now should be a motion/head tracking camera on or for VR. Microsoft need to get ahead of the game this gen, and now. The PS5 is the Bugatti Veyron of consoles, and has suprised everyone with how powerful it is. Mark Cerny is a fucking genius, and i say this as an xbox fan. Microsoft launched the XSX 18 months too early, the XSS is a piece of shit and they have zero exclusives, 10 months in to a new gen. Fucking pitiful. Next year the PSVR2 launches, and will be the 'best' (because it's new) VR headset on the market and the only one in the console space.

Microsoft need to use that Kinect tech to make a headset, yesterday. Phil Spencer talks shit and is constantly wrong. I know he said nobody wants VR, but he also said that about single player games, months before Spiderman and GoW sold millions.

I'm sure there are plenty of kooky projects knocking about the MS R+D department that they could slap together and make a headset. Fund some smaller devs to make gamepass VR fodder and get in front of it.

I'm upgrading my super disappointment to the entire Xbox division. It's a shame as well because they have the talent to make amazing kit. The X1X is a brilliant console and the Elite Pad V1 is hands-down the best controller ever made. V2 is, well, i don't know what the fuck it is.
Yeah, well... Don’t worry about the XBox division fucking things up, because it looks like MS’s plan is to buy their way to success by throwing money at any development studio, until they’re all locked up behind Gamepass.

Then we will finally have games as SAAS, and the Xbox will have fulfilled its mission and can finally die.

(The ultimate irony was probably the XsX. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an elegant design, but it’s basically a miniaturized gaming PC, even down to the OS.)

Damn, I miss the days when consoles weren’t miniaturized X86 computers, you know? You had Nintendo with their SGI hardware, Sony with their out of this world Cell processor. Even Microsoft dumped the X86 design and jumped into the game with a Tri-Core PowerPC CPU in the 360.

Those were interesting fucking machines.

(Yeah, the PS5 is an amazing piece of kit too, but you know what I mean.)

Hopefully next generation might shake things up a bit again. Maybe an NVIDIA based CPU and GPU (Their Denver design was pretty fucking revolutionary). Maybe something ARM.

Maybe Apple will enter the fray. Or it could be yet another AMD APU that is quickly a generation or two behind. We will see!

Anyways. Fucking Dying Light. I just want a decent footie game and rappel around and smash zombie skulls.

Is that too much to ask for?!?

Wouldn't say disappointed, because I don't expect games to be on time or a tenth as good as the hype, but I'm a little annoyed My Time at Sandrock has been delayed by some ratings bullshit.

Biggest disappointment for sure was Spore. I had such high hopes after seeing the old GDCe demo back in 2006, I preordered it and was super anxious to try it out because it seemed like a game I could spend months on. Then reality set in, I think I got to the universe section of the game and uninstalled it, and ended up pawning it off to a used game shop for 5$. What a hunk of shit.

What could have been:

Kinect is a subversion of the globalist agenda. Do you think your pod can fit a Kinect? No way, friendo. Facebook on the other hand with their mind controlled Oculus ideas are certainly getting ready for a future where you live in a plastic coffin with your limbs cut off to save space.

Bill Gates is actually based and redpilled. Also, huge cock.

Look at it on the bright side...

If you have a weak spot for 90’ies game designers, you could have been hustled by Chris Roberts, have paid 1500$ for JPEGs of spaceships and after 8 years still only have about 1% (and a really fucking BORING percent) of what was promised.

Yes I’m talking about Star Citizen, the lolcow of the gaming world headed by Chris Roberts, a man I’m pretty sure is a lolcow in his own right.

(The man actually divorced his wife AND MARRIED the woman he had reported to the police for stalking him!)

FFXIII is pretty shit

Game looked really pretty and cool in the trailers, box art is kinda bland, but the fact that it came in 3 (maybe 4, dont remember) discs on the 360 got me hyped. I didn't have a problem with the paradigm shit at first because I got used to and enjoyed the gambit system in FFXII.

Get the game. 17 hours in and I'm still fucking walking in a straight line, beating ugly ass creatures, upgrading boring crystal paths, barely touching my controller, while all characters have no clue what to do and are simply walking around hoping to stumble into the plot.

Look up online when the fuck the game "opens up and gets good", it says its 50 hours in. I never touched it again. FFX also had this problem of locking up exploration and most sidequest stuff to the endgame, but that game had a fun combat system and the story had a clear goal from the start: "Defeat Sin". To this day I cant tell what the hell the plot of XIII was about besides a lot of Lightning simping.

Metroid Other M and Duke Nukem Forever were the first times I remember being majorly disappointed. Both of them were overhyped garbage on release.
I.. I gotta ask...

Considering it had been in development for over a decade, and then suddenly surprise released after a years of work, what exactly did you expect?

I don’t remember that one as overhyped. More like “oh wow! After years as the butt of industry jokes it’s finally here! Be nice everyone! It may not be the best game in the world but at least it’s here!”

DNF getting released was like a Mongoloid kid graduating high school. You know he isn’t exactly going to Harvard, but who cares? He got a diploma after 12 years, just like all the other kids! “Way to go little buddy! You actually did it!”

Shenmue III. Seventeen years of waiting down the fucking drain.

I don't know what the fuck they were thinking when they implemented that stamina system.

Plus, the first two games utilized a modified version of the Virtua Fighter engine for the fights and after a little practice, it felt extremely satisfying to use but due to it not being a Sega property any longer, it had to be replaced. What took its place was incredibly stilted and limited fighting mechanics and every fight felt like a chore because the aforementioned stamina and the wonky hit detection.

Even worse, barely any progress was made in the story and felt like a largely pointless entry.

The advent of battle royale systems based on getting people addicted to a dopamine loop and buying shiny skins. Profitability > Gaming

I guess that means what Fortnite became is my biggest disappointment because I originally bought it as 'Save the World' where it was going to become a sweet Tower Defense game. Totally abandoned for no reason because they could have made similar content along with battle royale but....fuck it. Then Epic also decided to cancel the sweet 3D MOBA 'Paragon' because it would never attract the level of playerbase Fortnite BR would...so eh. why bother?

I will never use their platform or buy any game that has connections to them. It's pretty great honestly and I've yet to be disappointed in my decision.

Bright Side: Orc Must Die 3 is fantastic.

Microsoft have tried to tie their server war with amazon, in to gaming and it's going to backfire spectacularly. MS always do things backwards. Make a console that is as loved as the playstation brand - which MS achieved during the 360 era, then offer GAAS to your big pool of fans. What they're trying to do now is re-write the console industry, out of arrogance, instead of following the jap masters. There's a reason Sony and Nintendo have survived as long as they have, and it's because they know what to do in a crisis. The PS4 was built on a shoe-string, and launched when every journalist was slagging them off, saying they're broke and the ps4 will be shit. Highest selling console ever.

The PS5 is the closest we've had to unique architecture, for decades. The software, hardware, tweaks to the cpu and gpu, dedicated compression chip, dedicated audio chip and of course, that SSD. It's phenomenal what Cerny has done with that machine. I think he really has tripped up and pissed off Nvidia and MS in one fell swoop.
Hopefully next generation might shake things up a bit again. Maybe an NVIDIA based CPU and GPU (Their Denver design was pretty fucking revolutionary). Maybe something ARM.

I do not want Apple in the console market. It's bad enough that MS has fallen away from it's OG xbox roots and become another wankery Americanised marketeers wet dream. It's buzz-words and hype with nothing to show. Classic American shite. Sorry yanks but everything you do is all style and no substance. Apple, google and amazon are all just as guilty.

The PS5 isn't going to go behind any time soon. Last year PC fanboys were REEEing that no console can do 4k with ray tracing, even at 30fps. Ratchet and Clank, which is hands down the best looking game I've ever seen, runs at 4k60 with RT. The unique twists, turns, additions and software that Cerny has put in that machine are unique, and again, beat that SSD, let alone a full package for £350. I know it sounds like I'm sucking Cerny off but I love anything that pushes the envelope beyond what was considered possible. It's why i compared it to the Veyron. They're both engineering perfection which has raised the bar further than anyone thought possible.

It's just a damned shame that we won't see MS competing for another generation. Being able to jump between both consoles and their exclusives makes for an interesting gen. One side dominating makes it a little boring and with Xbox being a complete cluster-fuck, I can't see them regaining ground at all. Halo Infinite is the biggest embarrasment in Gaming since the launch of the xbone.

I was more naive back then mostly. I’d played the original a couple years before Forever launched and enjoyed it. So I figured a sequel for the 360 would be perfect. I also didn’t have good internet access back then so I was totally ignorant about Forever’s development hell and only saw the promotional stuff for it at game stores at the time.

Basically ignorance and naïveté. I learned some good lessons from those games.

Because I'm in the mood: Samurai Legend Musashi.

This game is one of the many bitch games that Square pushed out upon the Yoichi Wada era. Bitch games in this regard are games that are obvious betas/prototypes that Square pushed out as experiments for their main games.

Samurai Legend Musashi is a massive disappointment, because the game is a sequel to Brave Fencer Musashi, and is supposed to be about Musashi in his teen years, and this game was heavily pushed to be all about surfing. Naturally as a game founded by Hironobu Sakaguchi, this game got just as fucked as Final Fantasy.

Everything in this game is cut and pasted with material from the first game, and the combat is toned down to be a clunky attempt to make DMC styled combat "RPG based". Unlike the first game, which properly meshed action with its RPG elements, you are regulated to extremely basic and rigid attacks that leave you wide open to any foe that can outflank you from behind. Feedback/stimuli of damage is also a real uncanny valley, because all Musashi does when damaged is throw his head back while your health gauge takes off a chunk dependent on stat calculations and RNG, and this game will make you love Zelda's low health alert, because if you have low health, nothing will warn you of instantly dying if you have even a moderately low amount of health. Nothing will tell you of how hurt you will get, but it sure does that for the enemies.

The game's world and presentation is disappointingly shallow and unfleshed out. As I said before, this game markets itself with surfing and being totally radical and extreme to the max, but there is no extreme sports, let alone surfing, and the only instance is done at the last stage of the game. Legend's world from what I can get a gist of this is supposed to be like California or Hawaii mixed with cyberpunk and basic fantasy elements, but it doesn't bother to showcase this other than Antheum, which is a village that's built into a mall like dome structure.

I could go on forever about this game, but Legend is anything but a mythic lost ruin of what could had been. This game had a fucking ton of composers; outside of Masashi Hamazu, the game had not just the guys from Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy X, but two composers from Capcom who did Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Devil May Cry. The intro makes this game to be a totally bad ass anime adventure that ups the "EXTREME!!", making it as if Musashi's fighting style is going to be like if the original Brave Fencer Musashi was injected with DMC, Dynasty Warriors, and Shinobi, and you would take out more than ten foes at a time while rescuing hot girls. Moreover, THERE IS NO SURFING. You ride motorcycles and gay excuses of cybernetic minecarts, but NO SURFING OR BEACH PARTIES. THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT.

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst.

My god, how to miss nearly everything that made the original game so fucking great.
Not every game needs to be made into some weird open-world "RPG" (aka, skill trees being shoved in.) Sure, they made the combat better... in a game about running around.

It came out way too late for DICE to create a proper sequel, I think. The first game came out in like 2008, took them 8 years to somehow get a sequel to a game that didn't even really need one.

Microsoft have tried to tie their server war with amazon, in to gaming and it's going to backfire spectacularly.
I dunno man. It’s like watching two retards have a slapfight.
Amazon also tried to tie their servers into gaming (just kind of the other way around, starting with servers and then moving into gaming) and they’ve been hilariously incompetent ever since: Threw hundreds of millions of dollars into games, most of which got cancelled, and one even GOT RELEASED, and then cancelled.

Then they kinda went: Ok, Fuck Microsoft, we gotta take on Google too! And released their cloud gaming gizmo.

It’s sad to think how many competent games could have been made for the crazy amounts Amazon has spent.

One SaaS to rule them all! Every time I hear someone talk about Gamepass and what a good deal it is, I feel like slapping them and make them consider the bigger picture.

Gamepass has the possibility to ruin the industry like nothing else. I’m not a Microsoft hater and I’m not necessarily one of the “But you never really OWN IT” faggots, but... If games become a 20-30$ a month all you can eat buffet, what would that do to games? It’ll be an even shittier mass product than it already is.

If gamers don’t pay 40-70$ for a game, where’s the financial and emotional investment? Expectations will be shaped by “Meh, I paid 30$ for this and hundreds of other games” and not “Wow, I spent 60$ dis better be good!”

Why complete a game? Play a few levels and download another if it gets hard. Why replay an old game? They’re all “free” anyways.

Gamepass has the potential to do to gaming what a Burger King 40$ Eat what you want for a month-program would do to the restaurant industry and obesity.

Considering the severely underpowered Jaguar core, it’s really impressive what the PS4 is capable of.

It is a piece of impressive hardware for sure. Outperforming the Xbox despite on paper being weaker. And considering what they squeezed out of 8 anemic Jaguar cores, it’ll be impressive to see what they’ll get out of the PS5 for sure.

I just gotta add. Cerny might be smart, but realistically, the SSD and transferspeed were the only logical next step to take, considering it’s no longer a possibility to increase RAM, CPU or GPU five or tenfold.

And I still wish they had gone with an Nvidia GPU. Yes, RNDA2 isn’t bad, but Nvidia is still way ahead of AMD when it comes to graphics and especially raytracing. Guess it’s a question of cost though. $$ cost and die space.

Meh... I like their hardware but dislike the company. But you gotta admit that their M1 processors and GPUs are some of the most interesting things that have happened in that market for a loooong time.

Considering what the M1 can do in a laptop with less than 10W, imagine what something similar could do in a console with 80-200W. (And no, it’s not just ARM magic. Apple got an ARM license and use the ARM instruction language but are making their processors from scratch.

Speaking of “weird open world RPG” that’s kinda what got me worried about Dying Light 2.

The first one was a brilliant fucking game, without some vast open world to explore. Not every game has to be goddamn GTA where you can go anywhere, spend 5 minutes getting from place to place, and realize that most of it are just unnecessary props.

@Fapcop i can't quote you so I'll have to do it this way
I dunno man. It’s like watching two retards have a slapfight.

Amazon, Google and now Microsoft have no idea what the gaming industry is. They've seen Ea and Activision make money from psychologically manipulating kids in to getting addicted to gambling, and thought "Hey! easy money!" and completely fucked it. The stadia is the biggest piece of shit in gaming since the Ouya. Just laughably bad and missing the mark of what gaming is, and about. The vast majority of gamers are single player, offline gamers. For the longest time gaming was only single-player, with local split-screen play being the only 'multiplayer' option. Nintendo and Sony cut their teeth during that era, it's their bread and butter and the foundation of gaming. Amazon and Google don't, or refuse to realise that because they think there's more money to be made in Online gaming. I guess they never check the Playstation financials that just raked in $25 billion in profit

I agree with all of this, and we're seeing the long term effects of gamepass, right now. The service has burned out, and instead of Microsoft filling it with old xbox games, even as is games without remastering, instead they've reverted to mobile games and indie shit. I laugh when i check the "new on gamepass" section on the dashboard. It's just pixel art crap and cutesy wankfests. Luckily, Sony and Nintendo stick to what works and what has worked for 4 decades; good, immersive, enjoyable single-player experiences.

Think of the best games on the 360 or OG Xbox. Very few were multiplayer, or were known for their multiplayer. Gears and Halo were kings for their story line and play style. Mass effect was a single player game. Dead space, Lost planet, alan wake, Kingdom under fire, Too Human, Advent rising and on and on, all single player games. They've thrown it away to chase the 'big money' mobile whales. Simply retarded business strategy.
It is a piece of impressive hardware for sure. Outperforming the Xbox despite on paper being weaker. And considering what they squeezed out of 8 anemic Jaguar cores, it’ll be impressive to see what they’ll get out of the PS5 for sure.
Xbox went for the top trumps this gen, because they got spanked on specs with the xbone. It backfired, massively because...
I just gotta add. Cerny might be smart, but realistically, the SSD and transferspeed were the only logical next step to take, considering it’s no longer a possibility to increase RAM, CPU or GPU five or tenfold.
...as you say, the playing field has changed. Just ramping up numbers is great, but without everything being balanced and tied together with software, it is a lumbering, slow, collosas. Great, it has the biggest and best specs, how does it tie together though? This failure is embarassing considering MS has been tied with PC space for decades. Everyone knows a well balanced mid-range PC can output more power than a slapped together PC full of high end specs.
And I still wish they had gone with an Nvidia GPU. Yes, RNDA2 isn’t bad, but Nvidia is still way ahead of AMD when it comes to graphics and especially raytracing. Guess it’s a question of cost though. $$ cost and die space.
Watch this space. Cerny worked closely with AMD to get AMD to the level of Nvidia and Nvidia have done little to innovate, relying on sitting on their arse charging nonsensical prices for their cards. But hey, that strategy worked well for intel didn't it? /sneed

Nvidia need a kick up the arse, and it's coming in the form of RDNA3, some features of which were designed by Cerny. IMO AMD are looking at building a full package of CPU/GPU with software, while nvidia fanny about.

Meh... I like their hardware but dislike the company. But you gotta admit that their M1 processors and GPUs are some of the most interesting things that have happened in that market for a loooong time.

It's impressive tech, but it's another American company. I'm not ragging on the yanks here but they have shown to be utterly clueless in the gaming market, focusing on short-term profits over everything else. That isn't just the tech companeis of amazon et al, but the software companies of acti, ea and epic.

An apple console would cost north of £1000, be sub-par, and would have worse fans than Nintendo. I shudder to think what the pandering scumbags that are games journalists would do if Apple entered the market.
I dunno man. I hear they’re selling alright in the US. And the PS5 maybe a Veyron, but remember the “lifetime of (almost) free gas-card that MS gives away with every XBox.
This is where, IMO, Microsoft and Xbox have really mis-stepped, starting with the xbone and the bone headed quote from Mattrick of "We have a console for people who can't access the internet, it's called the xbox 360". Microsoft have become a purely American focused gaming company, but the wierd thing is, for all of the flag-waving American patriotism that is in every other industry, no 'real'/'old school' gamer (the foundation of the industry) wants american-centric games. It sounds crazy, but it's true. The best age of gaming was when the west emulated the design and ideas of Japan. Pure japanese gaming is a bit kooky sometimes, great other times. Pure American gaming is capitalism in vidya form and is purely money and profit focused. But when Western money meets Eastern philosophy, you get pure magic.

Selling xboxes in america to an american audience using american games is great, for short term profit. But to build a brand and a fan base it will never happen. The fickle american market will move to amazon, google, apple, or any other american company at the drop of a hat. In fact MS have been very, very lucky that the other companies have been so incompetent. If Apple followed the OG Xbox philosophy of gaming, Microsoft would be Sega'd inside 18 months from Apple's launch.

Thanks for reading my sperging.

Animal Crossing New Horizons. I've been a fan of Animal Crossing since I was a wee boy back in the GameCube days. I played every entry, and the only one I didn't like was City Folk, but that's just because it was basically just an upscaled Animal Crossing Wild World with a City tacked on. Loved the hell out of New Leaf, and was excited as hell to see that you could edit the terrain and decorate outside.
I played the game for a month straight, thinking to myself, "Oh, where are all the old furniture sets?" thinking Nintendo would patch them in eventually. And I waited. A new holiday event that was practically the same as the previous one appeared. Then another one. I began to tire of my tools breaking. A year has passed, and the content they promised has stopped entirely. I know that might be thanks to the cool, but still.

It also doesn't help that it seems that Nintendo cuts the neighbor dialogue in half with every new AC release. The neighbors in New Horizons are basically tutorial and event oriented. Also, they have little to no emotional depth. Used to be animals got mad at ya, wouldn't talk to you for minutes because you made the wrong choice or accidentally hit em with a net. Used to be animals got sad. Now they're basically just squeaky clean and safe for a generation of kids who have their feelings hurt if someone says their pants look a little too tight.

Goddamn kids get offa my vidyagames.
