Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

If he thinks Bob Camp, Bill Wray and Jim Gomez are involved, this can't be the reboot that was announced last year. Bob said at the time that he wasn't involved... but Billy saying this can't have come out of nowhere. This must be a new reboot.

If they are indeed involved, then I wonder what the executives thought. Maybe they decided to go and get the people who know the show - the thing they should have done in the beginning?

There's been no word from any three of them on whether they are involved in this, so there's no way to tell if it's true or not. (There are people I could ask who might know, however.)
I'm taking this all with a healthy dose of salt, but if the initial rumors about the reboot being "shelved" due to COVID are true then it's possible that CC payed close attention to what was discussed on Twitter (while obviously filtering out stupid crapola like that petition Rebecca Sugar got herself involved with to get the show cancelled) and decided that it's better to be on the safe side and get Bob, Bill, and Jim involved like they did with Mike Judge and the Beavis and Butthead revival that was announced last year.

It's :optimistic: as hell but I'm holding out hope that this turns out okay.

So, here's the thing. I was puzzled about all this so I talked to someone who has more knowledge of what's going on. This is what's happening:

The reboot was shelved last year because of the outrage, but a few weeks ago they decided to take it off the shelf - probably out of a combination of wanting to exploit that IP and betting on the fact that we're too numb and jaded to care (and they seem to be right; there isn't as much outrage as there was last year).

Bob is not actually involved as of yet - but he's spoken to some of the people who are on the reboot and told them he would like to be involved. So he could be involved at some point but it's anyone's guess if he will. At the very least, they know, so if he isn't involved you know who to blame.

I assume the same is true of Bill Wray and Jim Gomez. Hopefully all three can be involved but if not, well... I didn't watch the Animaniacs reboot because of what happened with Tom Ruegger. If it's the same with these guys I know who I'm sticking with.

I hate to bring up the Ren & Stimpy reboot again, but it appears that it’s still on according to Billy West and he thinks that Bob Camp, Bill Wray, and Jim Gomez will have some involvement with it.

I’d say pay attention to animation Twitter sperging about it being continued but…

…yeah, some people aren’t happy about it. Thankfully more saner heads are tweaking the lead in this time around if the quote rewteets are any indication.
I'm honestly surprised Billy still wants to work on this show, considering how Far-Left his political stances are

At one point he wanted nothing to do with the show because of his experiences with John K., who would regularly make him do hundreds of takes of screaming and say "You're 98% there"... but he's loosened up about it recently and gotten more willing to talk about it. So it's obvious he'd want to go back and do them again, especially since John won't ever be involved.

Worst case scenario the r&s reboot is a soulless corporate cashgrab that tries to tick every box marketing hacks still" think" viewers want to see on tv. Best case scenario it's similar to the rockos modern life special static cling.

I don't hate static cling (Ralph bighead trooning out aside) but it's not as good as say...the hey Arnold jungle move or enter the florpus. Those specials were made by people involved with the original shows who wanted to see a continuation on their work.

Static cling was written by and directed by a lot of people involved with the original show...but it feels at times like it they didn't want to make it at all. I've said that at times the writing feels like Joe Murray basically telling the aging 90s kids to piss off and quit crying their days of sipping caprisun after school and skateboarding in the park are way behind them.

Frankly I think I'd rather have a r&s reboot that has contempt for the decade it originally was from as opposed to a reboot trying to catch up on current year.

Honestly, I think it'll go like this, much like the original comic itself (and The Owl House, now that I think about it): it'll start with being bland, if harmless. Then, once the 2 million+ little girls who bought the books get nice and comfortable with their perfectly serviceable adaptation of their favorite comic strip, it will, as you so elegantly put it, "go full retard" and introduce the non-binary unicorn, the main male character (Max)'s lesbian moms (can't have any positive, traditionally masculine role models, noooooo, they've gotta be tech-CONSOOMING soyboy neckbeards like Phoebe's dad and Max) and full-on author tracts about the "problematic" media of the past:

BTW, take a wild guess as to who Phoebe's mom is based on.
And need we forget the creepy AF innuendos/references to Simpson's shaving fetish?

In case you missed it, the implication is that her newfound tail tore through her skirt (and by consequence, her panties).

And if you can believe it, it was even worse during the comic's development, when there wasn't even a unicorn at all:

SOMEONE TOOK A LOOK AT THIS AND SAID "Yes, this is a perfectly fine candidate to make comics for kids!" :stress:

:neckbeard: Nothing more needs to be said about that one.

"LOL SHE LIKES ANIMU, ISN'T SHE SO QUIRKY GOIS?! UwU"

Ah yes. Bragging. The cornerstone of any likeable character!

At some point, it was originally gonna be even more of a blatant Ozy and Millie clone than the final comic already is.

Judging by this, the kids tuning into Nickelodeon are in for a rollicking fun time! Heh heh heh....heh.....heh.....*sigh* Why oh why couldn't the masses bestow Count Your Sheep with love instead?
It’s strips like these that make me understand why /co/ on 4chan has some Tumblr-inspired comic strips on their board. I don’t think is done on random.

Mostly agree, although I did find this surprisingly based take. Someone out there actually does remember.....:'(

And in Hey Arnold’s case, it also wasn’t just a continuation he wanted to work on, it was the finale he was originally working on at the end of the show’s run.

So rather than having a plot tailor-made to appeal to people now, waxing nostalgically the whole way, it was just the plot of the original movie with updated animation.

Not to discount Enter the Florpus of course, God knows I love Jhonen’s works, but The Jungle Movie was such a good movie and such a cool long-overdue finale to the series. (…Though I guess Zim’s finally was also technically planned beforehand if you count the comics that they took some scenes from for the movie later on.)

Yeah, but there's a lot of people who need to hear that.

I admit there is a fine line between remembering the past fondly and being so far stuck in it that it's all you can see. (Fallout New Vegas called it "Old World Blues") The prior two examples i gave balanced looking back fondly but static cling was just way to harsh with delivering that messege and forgot the former.

I stick by what i said in saying it's more or less Joe Murray saying "piss off, the 90's are over and me or any old dogs from that era making reboots of the shows you used to love aren't gonna magically make everything like 1995 again."

and given how 90% of the time any reboots that do get made tend to be...well you've seen how they end up, not just in animation but rebbots in general. They rarely if ever work in current year because they need to "adapt" to current year.

Not sure if this was already brought up but:

Maybe it's a blessing, with the way things are run, CN might screw it up, or someone might complain online about stuff like this:

Yeah, you just know they'd replace half the voices with some flash-in-the-pan voice "stars", especially Irwin, who was voiced by a white woman (no, really).

Is this for real? They’re airing Family Matters on CN? Does that mean they’ll make that episode where the rest of the family disappear and Urkel injects Carl with his DNA so there will be two Steve Urkels?

When I saw that, I though, "Bullshit, some joker just photoshopped the CN logo onto a clip."

But nope, they really did run Family Matters right after Shazam. Also, I see they're still doing that stretch-o-vision bullshit.

Sad, it's become less about cartoons and more whatever WarnerMedia has left in their inventory for a "youth" demographic.
