If Barb took a payout from the insurance company and is paying for the repairs herself out of that money, does anyone know how the rental house works? Is the insurance company still paying for that themselves, or is Barb paying for it out of the insurance money? If it's the latter, then I'd imagine she'd want them to move back to the old house ASAP to save on the rent payments.

If they spend what little money they have on renovations I'd say "probably not." Chris made far more money from his e-Bay adventures than rationality ought to permit but it's not enough to pay for living arrangements for two people.
 
The thing is while Chris isn't a full blown hoarder yet but due to training by Barb or his own apathy, he is showing the early sign's and given time I can see him going full Horde 3.0 (The sperg evolves). However I can see when Barb pays her visit to the great good will in the sky Chris at least making a effort to tidy up the the place (even by his own low standards) even if it's just a way of making room for more toy's and he half asses it like he is want to do in any situation, an does it on a as needed basis this pile today as X lego set needs to go there. I can't imagine him putting effort into the situation to make the place either livable or a decent candidate for resale.

Depending upon the rent at their temporary housing, it would have been ideal if they could just take the payout, and use the money to continue paying the rent. There is, however, the question of whether or not there is still a mortgage on 14 Branchland Court (it's been discussed here, but I don't remember if there was a consensus). Maybe if they had the house demolished, sold the land, and used to proceeds towards whatever mortgage was on the old house, and stayed in the rental?

It would be very hard for them to manage both a mortgage and rent.

Given the new information we now have on the Chandler's financial situation, I can't believe that they were crazy enough to go out and buy another car. Barb didn't get as large an insurance settlement as she was expecting. Most people, faced with similar circumstances. would be more budget conscious.

He could, if he were so inclined, rent another one of those huge dumpsters and hire a couple of guys to fill it with the accumulated Barbage from inside the house. This probably wouldn't run more than a few hundred dollars.

Chris is lazy, but such a job would be too much for a single individual. If I were in the same position, I'd hire someone to help me.

Barb is fucking insane to be moving back in to a garbage dump horde house that burned for two hours straight, but not only is she doing it, she's only having the minimal repairs necessary done. The conditions there were so bad that Bob was eaten alive by parasites even as far back as 2011, but they've gotten worse each year since then.

I don't know what more to say. I just can't put it into words how disgusting, smelly, unsanitary, filthy, and toxic conditions are going to be for the Chandlers at 14 BC when they move back in. I don't think that they'll die or anything like that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they see immediate health effects after they move back in.

I'd rather live in a jail cell than at 14 Branchland Court. I'm not trying to A-Log here, I'm just appalled and telling it how it is.

Sky, this may be kind of an odd question, and it's entirely possible someone else here has the answer to it, but I need to ask. What is the exact structural integrity level of the house? Like, here in NY, even some basic structural damage paired with shit like what you mentioned is enough to get a home labelled a health hazard and condemned by the state. Is there a way that someone could get the EPA involved? I realize that ultimately, the Chandlers are responsible for their own actions and their own level of absolute fucking stupid on this issue, but I don't think anyone really wants to see them in this state.

Yeah, but knowing Chris, he'd never go for such a thing. I think it's more likely he would flood eBay with overpriced items, trying to increase his Lego-money or something.

Improbable. Federal agencies typically can't be bothered with this sort of thing. If the Green County Department of Health doesn't care what's going on in their very small jurisdiction, the EPA (nor the HUD, an agency which has housing directly under its purview) has no time for one private residence.
 
With the dangerously unsanitary condition of Chris' house, his taint piercing, his constantly deteriorating health, and his financial condition, I'm genuinely concerned for Chris' life here. I have a hard time believing he'll be alive ten years from now.

Jesus. In this state, I've seen APS called and properties get condemned for less up here.

No.
The rent at the rental house (not including utilities) is $1,400 a month. Even in the scenario of no mortgage on 14BC, the Chandlers simply wouldn't be able to pay the rent at the rental house. Chris's tugboat is $1300 a month, Barb's social security is around $1000 a month, and Barb's pension is a few hundred dollars a month. With all their bills, they simply cannot afford to stay in the rental house once the insurance company stops paying the rent.
 
In addition, I doubt the landlord would be willing to sign a contract with them. The Chandlers have probably already lowered the property's value in the short time they've been there and I doubt the landlord wants to deal with them once rent is no longer guaranteed each month from the insurance company.

Why would the EPA care about these two white trash hillbillies out of millions of rednecks in Appalachia? And who are we to interfere? The Chandlers are foul, hostile, abusive, abrasive people who have alienated their entire families and stubbornly refuse to change or even exhibit a slight sense of self awareness. They've made their lives hell, and while I feel sorry for them, especially Chris, at times, they're reaping what they've sown. Anyone who tries to lend them a helping hand is going to have their advice ignored/refused, and any material aid to the Chandlers will be abused/wasted.

The EPA doesn't deal with private residences, for the most part. The question of whether a home should be condemned starts on the state level, with the Virginia Universal Statewide Building Code (USBC). These are the rules you need to follow when you are repairing a building. The Virginia Construction Code is 156 pages long and very technical. It says that whatever repairs they make to the home must be up to code. Enforcement of the code, however, is up to the county's building inspections department. As Skyraider said, the Greene County Department of Inspections is a couple of guys working out of a trailer. Here is their website. Barb was required to apply for a permit when work began on the house. The building inspector needed to approve this permit. When the job is near completion, the renovations must be inspected. Note that the inspector is not required to review the whole house, but only the parts that were repaired from the fire. I don't think they care if the place smells bad. At that point the inspector can require changes. If it doesn't get up to code, the Chandlers can't move back in.

I suppose if a ween wanted to, he could call them up and express his concern about the Chandler residence, but whether or not they do anything about it is another question. Skyraider has expressed his doubts. Since an inspector is required to sign off on the repairs anyhow (I assume sometime soon), it wouldn't make any sense to harass their office any further.

This is universal in dealing with Chris. Think of the number of different people who tried and methods used to get Chris to sort himself out - he won't have it. The problem is always someone else's fault, and theirs to deal with. I guess he learnt it on Mommy's knee.

It would be a tragic end to the cautionary tale already unfolding of what happens with a combination of bad parenting, excessive hoarding, incredible laziness and stubbornness, and unrestrained ego. I'm not even A-logging here.

This makes me really sad. Living in a hoarded, water-damaged house full of mold is like my worst nightmare. They really would have been better off if the place had burned right to the ground after they got themselves and the pets out safely.
