2020 Oscars Discussion - complain about how Uncut Gems nor the Lighthouse weren't nominated here

Let me clear the air on Parasite--it's funny, twisted, and ultimately delightful. Out of all the films I've seen, it had just as many legitimate talking points as Joker. It criticizes a lack of empathy in the rich but not in a way that is black and white. painting lower class people as just as flawed--but likable at the same time. It's beautiful to look at and has a real thriller edge to it. I would definitely call it a worthy Best Picture. Any of these nominated films were worthy contenders.

the biggest irony for the Joker's detractors is that Best Picture still went for a movie with a message of criticism about society. Those people would probably rather die than to ever admit that Joker and Parasite share something in common.

honestly a lot of the wins and praise towards Parasite sorta feel the typical "wee look at the poor brown people winning, look how not racist I am guys for cheering on yellow people, take that white scum like me!" liberal drivel that's incredibly patronizing. you just feel these guys say it to not seem racist and yet in two years they'll forget all about that film, they don't actually care about the quality of the film but it's all to fuel their ego and to smear on "white guy faves" (Joker?)

This is one of the corrosive side effects of political correctness: even great films made by "minorities" that deserve praise seem suspicious to sane people because loud, insane people keep lying about what clearly motivates their own "praise."

Does this mean this is the next contender for the next Oscars?

This got snubbed a few years back:

Even with Parasite winning Best Picture, too many lazy Americans will refuse to watch it because they don't like reading text at the bottom of a screen. I have heard many people say that they are refusing to watch it because the hype had been built up too much, and they suspect that they will get nothing but disappointment if they do watch it.

Eminem should have performed that song with the Manchester bombing line in it instead of Lose Yourself, I would have actually paid good money to see the reactions out of that.

Perfectly legitimate concern. If I hadn't watched it months before it got any awards buzz I'd probably be looking at it side-eyed right now too.

That said, it is worth watching. And unlike previous wokebait BP's like Moonlight or The Shape of Water, it has an extremely high user rating on IMDB too (8.6; #22 on Top 250), so it's not just the fart-sniffing critics and Hollywood phonies who enjoyed it.

Look at The Handmaiden, for example, zero nominations. Is there anyone crazy enough here who thinks fucking Parasite is a better movie than The Handmaiden?

They have never watched a Korean movie in their entire lives, I can guarantee it to you.
In The Handmaiden’s case, the blame lies less with Oscar woksters who can’t watch movies with subtitles and more with South Korea. Instead of nominating The Handmaiden, they nominated the boring as fuck The Age of Shadows (which, shockingly, didn’t even make it to the nominations list).

I'm still blown away Toy Story 4 won it. Trust the Academy to suck off Disney again. Buncha old farts wouldn't known good animation if it smacked 'em in the face.

"I just watch what I take my kids to see."

Get real.

I will never not be salty about this.

Fuck Toy Story 4. Woody Got Wood is better than that shit.

How many of these crackas had never heard of Bong Joon Ho prior to this? I've been aware of him ever since The Host in 2006.

Toy Story 4 didn't deserve that Oscar.

The more I look back on it the more I dislike it, I don't like what it did to Buzz as a character, I don't like separating Buzz and Woody and I don't like the message the movie sends with both "strong female" Bo Peep and the fact that the female villain has to face no comeuppances for her villainous behavior because that's a great message to send to little girls, it's ok to be manipulative and dishonest to get what you want girls!

But beyond that it was just lacking in the thrills and the comedy compared to the other 3 movies.

At least Forky was cute and an interesting idea, but he was pretty much wasted.

Funny thing is is that Asian culture kinda has been better than western culture and kinda deserving of replacing it, but not for the reasons these assholes think, but because Asian culture is generally not "woke" like modern western culture is.

The Shape of Water is a pretty good movie though it is pretty woke.

Nooooo......no Bong wtf r u doing

Tho lol HBO would never hire Asians
But why though? Isn't the purpose of making an American remake to reach a wider audience? Parasite's a massive hit in the States right now. It's not like Ringu or Ju-On which were basically cult classics among a small dedicated group of horror fans, at least in the United States. At least there, making an American remake made sense because producers saw something that might make a bigger splash with mainstream audiences. Parasite's pretty well-known even among normie filmgoers, even my usually-uninformed parents know about it. This is a completely pointless gesture.

Good. It's nice to see more people are realizing the Oscars are a waste of time.

The Shape of Water is a pretty good movie though it is pretty woke.

It's good (and I very much enjoyed the art design and cinematography) but it's not BP material and wouldn't have won if the voters weren't using it to make a political statement.

Then again, the other nominations that year were pretty mediocre except for Dunkirk so it's not like some super-deserving movie got overlooked as a result.

And the soundtrack. It had a great soundtrack.

Anti-SJWs who bitch about everything being woke are just as bad and worthy of mockery as SJWs who bitch about everything being racist.

The reason it won is because there’s far more creativity coming from foreign films and indie studios like A24 than from Hollywood altogether.

I think it's worthy enough for a BP win and I'm happy for GDT.

It's probably the wokest piece of media that I've seen that I still like, but at the end of the day it was a well crafted, well acted, well put together movie, it wasn't trying to get by just on woke points.

Also fun fact, I saw Doug Jones speak at a con once, he was a really cool guy.

Yeah, some people take the anti-SJW side too far.

Anyone who prides themselves on the simplistic "MUH SJWS" shit deserves a damn thread.

I try not to fall into that trap of becoming overly obsessed with them because it's not mentally healthy and I confess I don't always succeed at that.

SJWs' bullshit will literally drive you crazy if you let it, which is why it's important not to let it get you too worked up.

Although the 2020 Oscars will be hostless, five-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais managed to lambaste Hollywood’s biggest stars all the same.

The controversial comedian and host of the 2020 Golden Globes took to Twitter on Sunday, hours before the 92 Annual Academy Awards kicked off, to take jabs at the many stars and celebrities that would be making speeches later in the night.

When one user asked Gervais, hypothetically, what he would joke about if he were hosting this year’s big show, the 58-year-old comedian responded with a pair of scathing tweets aimed at Hollywood’s elite.

“I can’t wait to hear all your inspirational speeches about equality, and it’s great that the 3 hours you’re here tonight is the only time your badly paid migrant house staff will get some time off to sleep this week,” Gervais tweeted in response.

Minutes later he followed up with a second hypothetical Oscars hosting joke that read: “It’s great to see such diversity in the room tonight. Rich sex pests of all shapes and sizes.”

Gervais is known for pulling no punches when it comes to roasting celebrities during awards season. While hosting the Golden Globes for the fifth time in January, he took aim at the many stars in the room for their relationship to large corporations like Apple, Amazon and Disney. He also mocked some of the Hollywood celebrities for their relation to late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

The 2019 show marked the first time in decades that the Oscars went without a host after comedian Kevin Hart announced he was stepping down as the planned lead of that year's broadcast after facing controversy when a series of homophobic tweets from years ago were uncovered. The actor has since apologized for the tweets, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed that the 2020 show will operate without a host as well.

Billy Crystal does not agree with the decision to hold a hostless Oscars again this year.

The actor, who has hosted the awards show nine times, spoke up about ABC Entertainment's decision to forego the longstanding tradition while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday.

He compared the host-less awards ceremony to a "trial without witnesses."

"Moves faster, but not quite the result that you want," Crystal told Kimmel, according to Yahoo.

The only person to host the Oscars more times than Crystal is Bob Hope, who assumed the stage as emcee for the film industry's biggest night 19 times. The "When Harry Met Sally" actor revealed why he enjoyed the hosting gig over the years and what Sunday's show may miss.

"I always loved being out there," Crystal said, according to Yahoo. "I loved the, I guess, the trust, you know, that the movie academy had in me to get out there, and I felt like it was a great honor to do it. And I think that when you have a show that's as long as it is, things are going to happen."

"And I think the problem with the no-host thing, perhaps, is that there's not somebody out there to capitalize on that moment, like you do when the wrong best picture was nominated," he added.

Crystal hinted that there should be the "right people out there" as a contingency plan in case something goes awry. But Kimmel didn't voice the same sentiment.

"I hope they don't," the late-night talk show host said. "I hope it's a disaster. We have to stick together, you know what I mean? These jobs are very few."

2019 marked the first year in decades that Hollywood's biggest night had no official presenter. Two months prior to the announcement, actor and comedian Kevin Hart was announced as the host of the 91st Academy Awards but he ultimately stepped down after homophobic tweets and comments he made in the past surfaced online.

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
