2020 Oscars Discussion - complain about how Uncut Gems nor the Lighthouse weren't nominated here

I'm kinda sad Scarlett didn't won either Supporting Actress or Lead Actress. She was probably expecting to win at least one of them.

I will get my makeup oscar in 15 years. Don't worry. I will get it for portraying the brave tale of a trans Japanese tree.

Quentin Tarantino losing to an actual Asian director who directed an Asian movie in an Asian language @ an American awards show after spending DECADES stealing from Asian movies n directors is just so funny to me.

Oh, I don't know. The Shape of Water was Best Picture two years ago and it was pretty unconventional and atypical for a Best Picture choice. Once the woke shit finally dies down, everyone is going to figure out how much of a jackass they acted around Joker. The movie has Classic written all over it, especially now that it's achieved meme status.

Unconventional and atypical? Yes. Controversial? Not particularly.

You didn’t have a bunch of press hacks talking about how you’re probably a terrible person if you liked that movie about a mute woman fucking a fishman, yet if you liked Joker, you’re apparently one bad day away from getting a thread in Shots Fired.

I absolutely agree that it’ll eventually be considered as a classic, once it’s not a “major player in the culture war” or whatever the fuck people think it is now.

Posted this in the main Joker thread buuuut

Heath and River are looking down at you with pride, you glorious vegan bastard.

Didn't watch the Oscars but I heard about Joaquin and Parasite. Good for Joaquin. From everything I've heard about Parasite it just sounds like some generic thriller movie with a boring "capitalism is BAD" message slapped onto it. Could be wrong though.

Parasite has reached the point for me where it’s so ridiculously overhyped that it makes me actively not want to watch it because it can never live up to the expectations that people have set it up for.

It certainly doesn’t help that the most glowing praise I see regarding it always comes from the most insufferable types of people.

The Irishman wasn't that great. Would've been better if it just focused on when the protag was an old man looking back on his life.

I'm in the same boat. I love the director's other movies that I've seen (especially Snowpiercer), but a lot of people whose opinion's I don't trust have raved about Parasite.

I'm definitely seeing it at some point ... But my enthusiasm for it has dwindled.

Let me clear the air on Parasite--it's funny, twisted, and ultimately delightful. Out of all the films I've seen, it had just as many legitimate talking points as Joker. It criticizes a lack of empathy in the rich but not in a way that is black and white. painting lower class people as just as flawed--but likable at the same time. It's beautiful to look at and has a real thriller edge to it. I would definitely call it a worthy Best Picture. Any of these nominated films were worthy contenders.
