Since the law came into effect last week, Ofcom, the UK’s online regulator, has written to several American firms ordering them to conform to the act, in letters seen by The Telegraph.
It has sparked outrage from US lawmakers and legal experts, who say the overreach is a threat by the UK to silence American companies and citizens.
Congressman Jim Jordan, chair of the House Judiciary GOP committee, said the law was an attack on American companies.
“Ask Apple and they would view it as a $500 million attack,” he told The Telegraph.

Now in a sane world most people would see it's completely unsustainable for the UK government to try to force people to dox themselves to see footage of protests on X but instead they use VPNs to get to the uncensored version, rather like people have been doing in China and other authoritarian hellholes for ages.

The problem is the people who run the UK, as well as being evil, are deeply stupid. They'd probably think it was fine if X is censored for UK IP addresses because they've all already moved to BlueSky which is massively censored for everyone regardless of where they live. And if X decides to not comply and blocks UK IP addresses or is blocked by ISPs they'd probably think that was even better because then people will get their news from the BBC, Guardian and Bluesky and won't see anything which challenges that narrative. So the protests won't happen regardless of how many migrants they house next to schools. It sounds insane, but unfortunately this is what they believe.

Another difference is that China can block US social media and then create their own versions which will do what the CCP tells them. Does anyone really think the UK could do this? Or any European country? Bluesky is a US based company. Just one which is aligned with the Democrats. Who think censorship is just fine. However it's still Americans running the sites because people in the UK and EU apparently can't start these sorts of businesses.
