The reason why bariatric surgeons ask patients to go on 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day is not only to lose weight before the surgery but also to see if they would be able to tolerate the smaller calory intake after the surgery during the maintenance phase. I believe the weight loss condition is insurance related while cardiac clearance is a way for the doctor to cover their ass if she dies on the table.
