This bitch has some balls. A quick Google search shows this guy does fanart of Coco Bandicoot, that is, a copyrighted character from the Crash Bandicoot series. In other words, the appropriated art he's bitching about is probably itself infringing.

Creating fanart of copyrighted characters is perfectly legal so long it is done as means of self promotion for the artist and posted freely online for everyone to see. Furthermore, commissioning an artist to draw such characters is also valid because the artist is not claiming ownership of said character nor producing physical merchandizing for sale with said intellectual property. It is a private transaction were one party is hiring another person's talent and time to create a new, original piece of fan art. If said artist were to produce a print with his art but it featured a copyrighted character then that would enter a sort of gray legal area, as long as said print is limited to private use and not produced in large numbers, then the copyright holder could let it slide if the profit of the material is not even worth pursuing in court.

As an example, Sakimichan, who is one of the most successful artist in Patreon earns tens of thousands every month and 90% of everything she produces is fan art.

As for Ben Hickling, he has every right to call out someone else outright plagiarizing his work. That other artist didn't simply saw his work and drew something similar or inspired by it from scratch, instead he just copy/pasted Ben's work, plastered it on a logo and charged money to a client for work that wasn't his. This is very much the same scummy behavior Dobson showcased in the infamous "Big Ben" fiasco.

Creating fanart of copyrighted .......

So that other guy got Dobson, I mean lazy, and did not bother to redraw the character, just photoshopped the posted one. That is the only difference I can see between that and commissioning fanatart. He got lazy, the Dobson method is spreading!

As a matter of fact there is, the scientific name of that condition is called: "You're a fat fuck, get some exercise and stop shoving food into your cake hole", Dobson should totally research into it from a gym and get some useful hints about his condition.

Why he's depressed?, probably backlash fron the shitty doodles he keeps posting:

Nothing like being selfaware that you're terribly lazy, don't make any effort to change it and even get mad when people point it out. Someone should make a comic of that pathetic jokeless loser life a person would live if he was like that... wait.

Ha, as if anyone cares enough about his comic to point out lesbian kick doesn't have skulls on her boots.

Yes Derp-face, there is. Mostly because your messed up brain chemistry is making someone unhinged enough they become lethargic to the point they may not even take care of themself. And lack of exercise obviously also affects then now your body weight. Funny how someone who takes medication against depression and anxiety doesn't seem to know this shit your psychologist and doctor should tell you about in an 101 the first time you ask what to do now. Although, there is also another thing you could do: Stop eating fast food. Eat a salad and some fruits.

Ha, ha, he drew himself with hair. And thinner. And with a job.
It's hilarious how he's still insecure with how he sees himself, inside and out. Oh, wait-- it's the bane of his entire "career"!

Actually, the legality of fan art is highly questionable. The only reason it isn't pursued more often is that it is rather stupid for a company to prosecute copyright infringement for something that isn't even costing them any money, and in the process, infuriates their most dedicated fans, that is, the very people who promote their actual IP and buy tons of it.

Fan art, like any other derivative work, has to pass the fair use test to be noninfringing, and that is whether it is commercial or it isn't. Whether a derivative work is commercial is only directly relevant to one of the four factors of the fair use test. The test balances these: "the purpose and character of your use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and the effect of the use upon the potential market." http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/four-factors/#sthash.iLQc2TaP.dpuf

Many fan works are, definitely, transformative enough, that is, they have enough original content, that they wouldn't fail on that part, but because fair use is a multi-factor balancing test, commercial exploitation of them would make it more likely that they wouldn't pass.

There isn't a bright line rule on it, though, and a minimally transformative "fan art" piece could easily be infringing with or without commercial motive.

It's more a matter of letting it slide than that there is any explicit protection of fan art.

In this case, with stuff grabbed from Google Images being used in a shopfront sign (a very bad practice by the way), both the original owners of Crash Bandicoot and the fan art guy have a legitimate legal claim against whoever made that sign and is using it for commercial purposes.

I just think it's kind of douchey actually to do it while being on somewhat questionable legal ground yourself. The damages in a copyright claim are generally monetary. That is, this guy would be claiming he would otherwise be making money off someone else's IP had it not been diverted into the pockets of this sign guy.

It's very similar to the Blue Balled Bear's whining about people using his own shitty art to criticize him and complaining about it being "stolen."

Days Of Future Past was great anyway, so I don't know what Dobby's talking about when he says 'Continuously'. Plus TYRION MUTHAFUCKIN LANNISTER
Game of Thrones is "problematic" cause the show about a medieval fantasy setting depicted a rape scene. Once.
Thank FemJesus for Feminists to point out to us where something goes "over the line". People getting burned alive, stabbed, their limbs cut off, poisoned, their manhoods lopped off, drowned, mauled by bears, tortured... that's all fine, but that one scene with Sansa and the show is suddenly "Shitlord scum" or whatever these clowns call shows that dare not being "PROGRESSIVE" enough.
And obviously, it's so bad that the magnificent performance Peter Dinklage put forth with his (spot- on) depiction of Tyrion Lannister completely vanishes and becomes irrelevant in light of the biggest of crimes the world has to offer: fictional violence (in a setting revolving around violence, no less) against fictional women.
It looks like a silly movie. Nothing world shaking, but its not horrible. Definately better than the stuff Dobbo likes.

Why does it trigger him? Are birds now a symbol of the patriarchy :) ?
I guess he developed a deep-seated hatred of them after the internet as a whole flipped him the bird and moved on a decade ago.

based on this:

Dat face.
Dat left hand.
Dat broken right wrist.
Dat Ronald-McDonald-Skirt.
Dat everything.
You know, those lines at the mouth corners should never be that huge on a character that's not meant to look old. Actually, with this style such thick lines just shouldn't be there at all. That might have just highlighted one of the biggest problems with Dobson's art.
I used to draw a bit when I was younger, but I never really got to a point where I'd confidently call my art "good". But even so, I realized pretty early on, that art often revolves around hinting and indicating things more than actually depicting them (at least when it comes to small details). When drawing something, it's sometimes just a difference of a hair's width that seperates a nice looking line from a line that looks 'off'. The difference is oftentimes really subtle but still remarkable. Just a tiny curve on a long line can make the whole image look more dynamic and vivid.
I dunno how to explain it, let's just say:
Dobson makes the huge mistake of always drawing lines that should only be very vaguely indicated. These lines shouldn't be seen, they should be noticed almost on a subconcious level.
Wrinkles around the eyes or mouth usually are used to indicate age, Dobs tries to use them to depict facial expressions. Even if these lines are present in a real-life face making that expression, you usually have to abstract and downplay them in images (as long as you don't use a fuckton of colors to make them look realistic), but Dobs apparently never learned that. During 20 years of being an artist. And going to an art college.

This.
First thing that went through my mind was "Dude, you claim you got your PTSD confirmed by a psychiatrist and you don't know how Depression affects your body?"

Well, some people don't quite understand themselves entirely, some are just not very good at figuring out their own emotions or how they feel towards things. Buuuuuut that'd probably mean something like 'not even really knowing why you're so anxious in public' as opposed to 'WATER GAVE ME PTSD'

Also maybe I should go through some of that Dobbart and tweak them a bit, mainly around those gigantic mouth lines and see if they look any less terrible for it. Probably will. Also do something about those creepy mouth curves when grinning... Still, good point on the lines and expressions bit. Just about any competent cartoonist would tell you that an exaggerated expressing is made through the shape of the face itself. Like a character who's teeth-gnashing enraged would probably get an exaggerated lower jaw.

Same with other expressions. It's probably why Dobson faces look even more off than usual when emoting. Just take our little pal in the corner of this thread, outside of slightly bigger eyes and smaller pupils it's pretty much the same bluebear face. I mean, memes aside, take a look at Dr Robotnik from the old AOSTH cartoon
the_many_faces_of_dr_robotnik_by_wolf54321-d367eez.jpg

The shape of his face changes with a lot of these expressions but the amount of lines used remains around the same giving them a comically exaggerated look (expressions of this severity are also an example of when it's actually good to go 'off model' in a sense) while not looking horrifically older.

Meanwhile Dobbear's face is practically the same with very slight alterations and an absolute ton of extra lines, so it looks less like a comically exaggerated face and more like he aged a few hundred years and may be turning into an undead husk.

Well, that was a bit long, sorry. It's just quite fun to talk at length about art. Also enlightening. Dobson really has a talent for highlighting big no-nos in art that likely would have gone unnoticed otherwise.
