....if this is true, I don't understand how a Mist ending would somehow be worse.

This is how I imagine the conversation went:
Editor: "You know, your manga is really popular in the West, we think the Mist ending is too depressing."
Isayama: "Ok, so you're saying incestous necrophilia instead with God watching approvingly?"
Editor: "No...what? Where the fuck did that come from."
Isayama: "Well, you said the Mist was too depressing, so Mikasa picking up Eren's decapitated head and saying 'See you later Eren' while she preserves it in a pickle jar would be heartwarming. She even puts it in a body pillow and cuddles with it. So cute."
Editor: "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Isayama: "Right, so God approved incestous necrophilia with a female Ed Gein then. Got it."
I think the yandere shtick was dropped many chapters ago. Most characters dropped some extreme emotions long ago and became doormats too in addition to Mikasa. Everyone became an emotional blob to bring forward the cringevengers.
Honestly Mikasa is the one character that from the beginning had been wasted since it feels like after the Trost Arc, Mikasa has been reduced to doing "cool" moments and protecting Eren. The only interesting thing with Mikasa IMO since was her role in the serumbowl and her character in the Paradis arc but then when Marley attacked the Island, she went back to just being a "cool" moments character.

It's hilarious how Levi stole her whole character arc. Imagine telling someone during S1/S2 that Isayama was going to introduce a villain named "Kenny Ackerman" but that the whole plot would be almost entirely about Levi.
