even after having people explain to me what attack on titan turned into, it doesn't make any fucking sense
why did you guys stay after eren turned into a titan?
it is the biggest and first red flag

It was back when mystery box storytelling was considered all the shit with the difference between that back when Isayama opened up the box extremely well in a way that seemed satisfactory to viewers.

I have a pathological hatred for any animes where the main character is the chosen special one that gets superpowers because fuck you and I thought the way it was handled on AoT is probably the golden standard for you should handle it, the show was focused on political intrigue and mystery instead of just flesh mechs punching one another.

The way it is handled on Attack on Titan ends up being just like any other series that implodes under the weight of its mystery boxes and horrible answers inside each box. You had royal bloodlines, curses, magic, infinite rebirth, time travel, the Paths, and all sorts of nonsense that all come out of nowhere and contradict each other. Attack on Titan just borrows a little bit of Naruto then Star Wars then Dune and mashes them up into an recognizable mess.

Let's make Eren like the God Emperor from Dune who can use the Paths to see the past and future. Or like Bran from Game of Thrones who uses his powers do just sit there and do nothing. No, let's make Titans some injected drug or serum, and the power comes from scientific experiments. Or maybe it's a curse. Or, maybe, it's a royal bloodline, that's maybe also a curse. Maybe it's a magic royal bloodline that transcends time. And has automatic reincarnation for Titan powers. And maybe an alien worm came from space. Whatever just go with it. Naruto can overcome anything through hard work. No wait, he's the son of the creator of the universe, and a living god. Whatever.

As childish as Harry Potter is his powers make sense. His parents put a spell on him to deflect a killing spell. Voldemort tries to kill him and it backfires and nearly kills hims intead. Part of Voldemort, the most powerful wizard, gets trapped inside of the child and leaves a scar on him (an inspiration for Naruto's whole demon possession and prominent scar backstory). The child now has some bond with Voldemort including his raw power. But where does wizard and spell power come from? Is it even answered in the books or movies? In Attack on Titan they literally not only explain why Eren has special powers, but they literally trace Titan powers back to their source, leaving no mystery but also leaving a terribly stupid explanation.

"Yes Harry.....you are a wizard....you see...billion of years ago an alien worm came from space......you get your powers from that worm who became a tree".

You had royal bloodlines, curses, magic, infinite rebirth, time travel, the Paths, and all sorts of nonsense that all come out of nowhere and contradict each other.

Most of this shit came in season 4, everything upto season 3 is kino and more or less self contained as far as the lore and story goes.

I've seen the premise of "use your enemy's power against them" work before, and in that first arc they had shown Eren really fighting, scratching, and clawing for all his worth for every last bit of power he could acquire. The payoff seemed appropriate enough. I stopped enjoying it after the island. The story did not scale up well and the only reason I really bothered catching up was because the giant ribcage-centipede monster looked creepy as fuck and I wanted to see what was up with that.

We're not talking about Goku here. We're talking about someone who set events in motion that murdered 80% of the world population including his mother just to make his childhood waifu notice him by his own admission, the same waifu who did all but drag him to bed by force to give him a hint.

He was fully aware she liked him, but he was goal oriented. He originally wanted to wipe out the Titans or die trying, then obviously he'd be able to focus on everything else. I doubt Isayama was ever planning a basic ending like them getting together, but he clearly put the pieces there. There's zero way Eren didn't know, he just put it off.

If you disagree with Erens goal you would've dropped it after the first episode, you want the titans to be eradicated and you want Eren to succeed in his goal, this makes him charismatic. Because you want to follow his journey. A frequent issue with harem anime is that the protagonist himself doesn't have any goal but the women who lusts after him does (I.E getting with the protagonist)

She looks like an anime character with black hair and gray eyes. You make strange assumptions. There are plenty to dislike about AoT but none of the things you say makes a lot of sense. He didn't exterminate all the marleyans, the ending probably would've made more sense if he did, the author did a "lets talk it out" kind of ending and had Eren talk with god to remove their titan shifting powers, the source of fear for the world.
If the author wanted to exterminate the marleyans he would've done so, instead of bending backwards with all these twists and turns to make a non-genocide ending possible.

Hell even before the timeskip he was an angry guy who wanted to do his best to protect those close to him, and had self loathing issues once he knows the truth.

The average harem protagonist is some dipshit whose entire personality is that he has basic human decency which makes women fall in love with him because basic kindness.

Mikasa literally chooses to outright kill Eren and actively went against him in the finale. The average harem girl would’ve enabled Eren’s bullshit and helped out in killing people. Even then, Mikasa had a strong relationship with Eren so even when she went against him, of course she’d feel fondness. But this also applies to Eren’s other friends, not just Mikasa.
