Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I wouldn’t hate Obsidian so much if every single one of their games wasn’t so “self fart sniffy” if you get what I mean and the fact that they feel the need to insert their bullshit “subverting expectations” and purposely make something not what it is to be “different” (KOTOR 2 being the least Star Wars shit I’ve ever seen pre Disney.) and also for their fans acting like their games are God’s gift to humanity.

Subverting conventions or expectations is not fun or interesting anymore, and it is kind of fair that Obsidian was big on doing that.

It's late and I'm a little tipsy but a thought occurred to me while lamenting over the state of fantasy games I want to play and that I desperately want to be good.

I remember the first Gamergate. It was a ragtag group of retards who were mad about a whore getting a good review because she got fucked by five guys. I remember when it took off too, when nobodies first learned to grift off of people liking video games. It's what really gave Ethan Ralph his excuse to not ever get a job after all. List goes on and on.

These new people are saying the same shit aren't they? But they're cleaner, articulate, organized. I don't think I trust them. This Grumms guy is getting comments from the richest man in the world who has an ear to the president elect. We've seen multiple campaigns pointing out retarded shit in these new titles and as a result they tank hard. I can't go on youtube without seeing some fucker pointing out the smallest slight a game studio has done to them and a reason to not play a game. It feels coordinated, it feels like the same shit the journoscum that I hate has done to us for years. It makes my addled mind wonder... is some has-been dev for WoW the leader of a new grassroots movement or is the richest man in the world running a media campaign saying things that I want to hear?

I don't like it. I get that you want to stomp those faggots into the dirt and laugh at them. They've destroyed a ton of shit I really like. I don't like this either though but the monsters it creates could very well be worse than the ones we're dealing with now.

Happy Thanksgiving!

You raise some good points. I remember Grummz posting a lot back when GG first popped off 10 years ago and thought something was off about the dude THEN, that was more retarded younger me. I think it really comes down to what you said, these people see a burgeoning market in anti-pozz grifting in games and now that bigger more mainstream kahntent creators are hopping on the bandwagon, particularly Asmongold and the like we're going to see it get a lot more obnoxious and the pendulum will once again swing. You're already starting to see the over correction with those 2nd wave DEI detected steam groups listing off any and every game as le ebil SJW slop if it has anything even remotely non-vanilla in it. In a perfect world people would just shut up and artists/devs would be left alone to make whatever it is they want to make without being held to any sort of globohomo corporate standards or bend to the whims of busybody homosexuals screeching online. Idk shit's gay that's all I got, I just wanted to play video games.

I just wanted to play video games.
So do we all. My point is that it's not just the grift anymore. I think there's actual money being pumped into these retards to complain about a pronoun selector that I would assume gets ignored for the rest of the game.

Again, I'm a little addled right now, but it's strange to me that there's this big push to immediately shit on some large budget project a large studio is about to release. It worked on Dragon Age pretty well but I have a friend on steam who has fairly good taste that I see playing it a lot. Obviously there's something good about it if he likes it, might be that there's some things there worth exploring. Not worth buying at release but maybe worth taking a look at later on. Really feels like there's some engine out there looking for the next win and circling "he/him" in MS Paint is a big win and now all the usual suspects are telling me, "YES, YES IT IS A WIN AND ALSO THIS FAG IN THE ART DEPARTMENT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STORY IS BEING A RETARD ON BLUESKY IS HERE TOO".

I don't know what the conventional term for it is, but there's something all journoscum and political faggots do that I call "retard pointing". You find a group of people that are interested in a topic. Then you pick out the most retarded person on a side of that topic and point at him and say "See, look at that retard! They're all like that retard!".

You can see it all the time on the left, just look at any reaction Nick Fuentes generates. Find a retard, point at them, make them the face of the thing that you don't like. As someone who is very fond of mocking retards I find this practice very offensive.

TLDR; I think there's a conspiracy afoot where politicos are using mid level youtubers to point out specific idiots to mock in order to influence public opinion, and I don't like it.

But it is genuinely well written and it has all the "diversity" without even once uttering the accursed word,
A lot of that has to do with the time it was written as trek writer's later outputs shows. Trek as a universe outside of TOS is extremely 90s centric, even its progressivism and diversity is 90s. Very Civic Nationalism style, everyone from all races is mostly the same or wants the same goals, outside of random bad apples. DS9 challenged that a bit and is why its a bit more well respected today, but overall the reason we can't go back to that era of diversity is that the last dozen years or so intersectionality replaced that "melting pot" style diversity idea in college campuses and media and people overall.
Little wonder that Obsidian has gotten so mediocre when Chris and Tim can barely get anything done
its the peter principal in action, because the reward for being great in your field is management instead of dividing up management and quality workers the way militarys have done with officers and warrant officers you end up with people like Chris and Tim who get moved up the ladder and are fucked because of it and leave less and less of their signature touches on things as the scope expands.

its why so many games in the ps2 era with dev teams of under 50 people seem to be beloved with numerous cult classics whereas now every game in the west is made by teams of over 500 people and they all suck. This is why i'm optimistic for Larian Studios, the guy in charge seems confident in being able to control 480 employees and force them to make a great video game.
Legendaries/Unique Weapons also had tiers,
are you sure? maybe they fixed that in the remaster, but i remember them being the few weapons in game that weren't tiered locked and why they became my go to during a low level run.
I legit cannot think of a single game Obsidian has made since New Vegas that was actually worth playing.
how many AAA video games made in the last decade can you say are worth playing?

Sawyer being a leftoid isn't a shock, he's a continuing Something Awful goon. He still posts there in the Games subforum, and seems to be into wristwatches.
Absolute lunacy.
I haven't been back to something awful since 2016, but I can only imagine its become more of an echo chamber of liberalism.
If you had asked me back in 2001 if something awful would be some hugbox faggotry I'd call you a madman. Its kind of depressing how many devs came out of there and how most of them are just absolutely awful.

Sawyer is one of the few devs that are extremely leftarded while still being very talented.

Someone like that results in other loonies to get into high positions though, as the self-hating artfag with MDS shows.

I fear that the "mid" arc of Obsidian that started with PoE is over, and that we are entering the "trash to crash" saga.

Yes there are. Most uniques in the base games are only MK1, for MK2 and MK3 legendaries you have to actually buy the DLCs. It is very annoying, take something like a sawed off shotgun called "Peacekeeper" you find in Emerald Vale for instance. It has less pellets but higher damage per pellet, a genuine difference over the average shotgun. This is the only Sawed Off unique in the base game, and since it's found right at the very beginning, it will always be worse than even the base MK1 Tactical Shotgun or MK2 Sawed Offs that start appearing not long after you leave tutorial planet. In order to actually main this weapon with any degree of success, you need to buy the DLC and get one of the uniques there or the regular MK3 variant. The catch here is that only Peacekeeper, the useless MK1 shotgun, has this unique effect, all the others have some generic integrated elemental type that is the equivalent of having a free mod installed rather than something truly unique. This varies greatly from weapon to weapon it is a very poorly implemented system and first time players will not know that you're only supposed to tinker with late game legendaries and MK3 weapons, and will spend a fortune installing minor upgrades on weapons they will abandon on the next planet when they find something superior in the generic vending machine or off a raider corpse. Something tells me that Avowed will not be different in this regard, which might make magic builds more rewarding since I assume the spells work differently than random trashy weapons you have to keep replacing.

Absolute lunacy.

I'm not surprised, it's often the edgiest boys who end up being the biggest faggots around. Never liked SA and I'm glad I was right on the money.

Yes there are.
oh i understand what you mean now, yeah the uniques are gated, i was talking about the "science" weapons. particularly the Spectrum Gatling which you unlock through a small fetch quest but is meant to be an end game level weapon. thats the closest way to get an end game level weapon and cheese your way through the game. although actually reaching it is a massive bitch, but once you do you're golden.

Science Weapons are a completely different thing altogether, and a neat idea. Shame that most of them are useless or gimmick weapons in the base game, aside from the Spectrum Hammer which I think is bugged and does way more damage than it should. The ranged equivalent of it is the Spectrum Gatling which is indeed the most powerful weapon in the game and not that hard to unlock. I wonder if Science Weapons will return in some way in Avowed, maybe as enchanted weapons or something. There is only so much you can do with melee weapons in a setting like this.

This is why i'm optimistic for Larian Studios
There's actually a lot to compare between something like Dragon Age: Veilguard Deadname and Baldur's Gate 3. Neither are representative or even good sequels to their previous titles, neither are really made by the same company who made the previous ones (there is nothing left of old Bioware, or anything good left of Obsidian) yet one has actually made a good albeit flawed game while the other has made an abomination with which you really, really need to cherry pick its positives. As long as Larian doesn't get further subverted by external actors, they might keep up some manner of quality. Might.

Setting aside the woke fuckshit mess that the game apparently is...

I look at the gameplay previews, and all I can think, every time I see it, is "How do you take what Skyrim did almost fifteen years ago now, or what Dark Messiah of Might and Magic perfected almost twenty years ago now, and make it look that boring, stiff, slow, and unresponsive?

Am I alone in this? Just me? Even if the game wasn't a woke disaster, it just looks bad. I mean, not visually, visually it's pretty enough, although kind of oddly washed out, but the gameplay looks really, really un-fun.

So do we all. My point is that it's not just the grift anymore. I think there's actual money being pumped into these retards to complain about a pronoun selector that I would assume gets ignored for the rest of the game.
making money off public opinion isn't a grift, unless you're some discord-troon. people get exactly what they pay for.
as for who pumps money into it, I highly doubt there's a secret anti-sjw blackrock silently funding a countermesssage. it's more likely people are so sick of it all they're willingly giving someone a platform (and monetary support) for saying what they can't, and no one would probably listen anyway. heck that how politics work in general.

or look at it this way: if everything was peachy, they would have nothing to scream about. they might exploit some current of the zeitgeist, but that doesn't make them wrong.
it's easy to shit on games like veilguard and dustborn because they ARE that shit, thus there is a lot of stuff to criticize on it. I wouldn't go as far and claim their goal is altruistic for videogames "to become good again" (although everybody benefits from good entertainment), especially when there's money and fame involved, but that doesn't mean they don't have a point and raise a stink that's long overdue.

another thing, if the pronoun selector is such a minimal thing, why is it even there in the first place? it's either empty pandering to certain demographics (and then what else in the game is?), or the symptom of bigger rot below the surface. sure, some woke artist might not influence the game direction at large, but they usually don't work in environments that questions their believes or "agrees to disagree", even less with all the shit they spout on social media as a true believer. if they're woke, publicly, you can bet your ass the company is as well.
and besides, if you behave like a twat it directly affects my willingness to give you money for your product, whatever your politics are. there's plenty of other games to play...

As long as Larian doesn't get further subverted by external actors, they might keep up some manner of quality. Might.
For now it's unlikely, given how they just walked away from any possibility of even making DLC for BG3 (and you'd know WOTC and/or Hasbro would have showered money on them to do so). So they're not beholden to anyone but the whims of the CEO atm, who himself comes off as a 90s nerd who just want to make bad jokes and cool games.

But with how fast they been taking on new employees, it's probably just a matter of time.

The thing that gets me about the pronoun selector shit...

It's already a character creator. If you want to play a woman, play a fucking woman. If you want to play a guy, play Dudey McDuderson. The only point of the pronoun selector is basically "I can have a butch woman who calls herself a man" or "lawl, my Arnold Schwarzenegger-knockoff calls himself a girl".

And don't get me started on "top scar" as a character option. If you want to play a guy, PLAY A GUY. Here's your chance! Guilt free!

It feeds into something I've said before - for a lot, hell I'd venture most, of these people, they don't "want to be a woman/man". It's very specifically, "they want to be a trans woman/man". It's some combination of fetish and desire to score persecution points or something, and they should be locked up and the problem studied by Top Men.

this. I'd go as far and say most people don't even have an issue with a gay or "queer" characters - if written well.
in the 90's no one gave a flying fuck about it and people understood as a character there has to be wants/needs and some kind of arc to actually be a character, so when the token gay has a happy end with another dude most people were emphatic enough to understand it.

we have the whole rainbow shit to thank for pushing it so far acceptance of that has actually go down. gg fagets...

I would argue they don't even have to be written well. They just have to not be one note mouth pieces for the creator's thinly veiled political opinions/fetish.

For me, I don't dislike it if they are just characters that happen to be queer. To be honest, I would even argue that depending on the setting, it makes sense to have them.

A while back I remember the whole "Spiderman Pride flag removal mod" controversy, where there was a mod that removed Pride flags from New York City. The thing is, have you ever been to NYC? IMO, It's Infinitely less believable if there are none.

My issue is when that's a whole character - when the first thing you can use to describe a character is "Gay".

In regards to the whole "so when the token gay has a happy end with another dude most people were emphatic enough to understand it.", I despise it when the "protected classes" can never be wrong, have anything bad happen, or have negative traits.

So from this we know senior directors at Obsidian don't want anything to do with Avowed. We also know the Avowed director is the central focus of negativity at the studio. Chris also thinks Obsidian us going to get hit with many discriminatory hiring practices lawsuits which we know takes place from what we saw from the deleted self hating white people post.
