Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
An old sacred cow of the industry, now a puppet of a publishing juggernaut, develops a new game after several progressively disappointing releases. Some rogue team member proceeds to shit on its main audience, and proudly announces how deliberately and utterly pozzed it is before the pre-launch marketing push even starts. The cursed "don't like it don't buy it" mantra joins the discourse. The worst scum of the games journalism clique immediately starts forming a defense force around it.

Where have I heard this tale before? How will it end, I wonder?

I was the biggest stan of Obsidian back in the day, but the painfully mediocre Outer Worlds was the last straw for me, Avowed looked like absolute shit to me from the first reveal and the fact it shares a setting with the PoE games killed any chance of redemption it could probably have. It's completely incomprehensible how those fuckers seemingly can't learn a fucking lesson. At least wait for the game to be released to start your gay little crusade; NDAs for devs should include sperging on social media about any aspect of the game.

I can’t wait for more progressive libertarian virtue signalling in another “fantasy” rpg game next to my obviously sexless asexual but lesbian companion. I really feel escapism when I’m sent on my next fetch quest for my companions dilator. Thanks obsidian!

I remember someone somewhere making the point that triple A is dead and corrupted and that the only hope for good quality games that can eventually branch out is in indie development. Hopefully this corporate trend of progressive pandering will end when Ubisoft and co reach the point of no return in bankruptcy. Cautionary tales/case studies are the only way these “things” will learn.

Imagine alienating the entire market just by adding pronouns, these retards believe this moral crusade is going to change people's opinions. Jokes on them because I've got a backlog of unfinished games! And the market is saturated with slop.
They honestly think the woke shit is legitimate activism but it's got a unnatural feeling to almost everyone.

Don't forget that veilguard actually lost money. Only reason it even ranked on charts was that it had no competition, and Half Life 2 blew past it. Even with napkin math it's in the red.

The disney's of the world love lighting money on fire. somehow netflix keeps pulling dei bs and it hasn't stuck and everyone wants to be as niggerloving as tim apple. yet the momentum the netflixes and apples have are not something the veilguards have.

the seething is always absolutely extraordinary when it inevitably fails. here's to more concords until all faggots get btfo of shuttered game studios. let them die.

a god takes over a giant statue, stomps around a couple of islands, you follow the aftermath, have a conversation with him, the end

PoE2: Deadfire has one of the worst main plots in a RPG, it could probably be finished in under a hour. Funniest thing is probably that Durance's (the based priest) in PoE1's backstory is essentially the same plot (stop a god; the same god, even) but infinitely more interesting -- he got to build a magical nuclear bomb and actually stop the god.
I agree, Deadfire has by far the worst story I've ever seen or heard of in a video game.
I legit cannot think of a single game Obsidian has made since New Vegas that was actually worth playing.
I did enjoy the first Pillars of Eternity and it's DLC. Tyranny also had a very fun magic system.

It worked on Dragon Age pretty well but I have a friend on steam who has fairly good taste that I see playing it a lot. Obviously there's something good about it if he likes it, might be that there's some things there worth exploring.
As someone who frequents the Troonguard thread, the game genuinely seems dreadful. Not only are most companions insufferable, you cannot give them the boot. It's asinine. And if that wasn't bad enough, you need to coddle and validate them by completing everyone's personal quests or you'll fail the final confrontation at the end. No joke. And the writing quality is beyond trash.

Wokeslop? DEI? You must have hit your head pretty bad back there, women have always looked like this! Come on, let's go queue up for some Concord, it's the top game on steam!

Did Kamala Harris also win the 2024 Presidential Election in this timeline, and then promised to start The Ultimate Solution to get rid of MAGA, Based, and Chuds, permanently?

That's nightmare fuel. There's no way they did this on purpose right? This has to be a botched 3D asset editing job right? How could you make this and think "This looks good."?

You know...can I just have a fantasy game that isn't completely gay? Can I just have some fantasy that is me and my bros hitting orcs with various sharp implements and nary a sodomite in sight? I know that's problematic because orcs are now black people for some reason, but I just want something that is just normal for 2008. No vitiligo, no bear sex, no genderfluid shit, no pronoun shit, just something free from current year.

I was kind of interested and now I'm not. If they do the pronoun thing, then there is going to be tons of other things that have slipped in, that will just irritate me and take me right out of the setting.
Bruh, just play some Spiderweb Software games. I don't think Jeff Vogel has gone full retard yet.

The studio must follow Microsoft's Product Inclusion Framework which is a guideline of DEI and wokeness at its worst.
You are right, some MS decisionmaker wants MS to make less money.
unless the unique has some rad effect you like, in which case you can spend a ridiculous amount of money to tinker with it to raise it's damage
Yes, that's why the science weapons were the only uniques worth keeping, as the upgrade costs didn't ramp up.
The increase of visual fidelity lead to a decrease in the necessity of art direction.
Yes, compare the DA2 Oxmen and Elves to Veilguards humans with weird ears/horns.

Seemingly the only woman in Halcyon without cropped hair.
Outer Worlds Part 2, a functional open world vanilla paste title. Doesn't help that usually anything Pillars-related ends up being boring anyway. Functional to play, but extremely milquetoast/boring
I liked Outer Worlds, but felt its rough edges and significant woke tropes. No one sane would pay a US$20 premium for it over Kingdom Come. I'll probably end up buying it at 75% off.

The only good thing about the Pillars of Eternity series was the graphics, which I really liked. The gameplay was mediocre, the story completely forgettable, and I don't think I even finished the second one.

Avowed looks like a homosexual, soy-fueled Oblivion without any charm. That's why I'm pre-ordering the premium edition.

They still do unless you have high enough Science skill, hence the name of the weapon group. These are weapons aimed at geeky characters.
I would have to run thru a list of unique weapons the game has to confirm this and I can't be bothered right now, but I will tell you that there is a few unique MK1 and MK2 weapons that have pretty good effects. Problem is, do you want these effects so bad that you're willing to nerf your damage output? Frankly, the combat isn't in-depth enough to warrant asking this question in Outer Worlds and I fear it will be the same in Avowed: People will overlook the fun options and just go for the biggest numbers to make combat as brief as possible.

Here is a(partial) list of unique weapons in OW to give you a taste of what might be coming

As you can see, it's absolutely all over the place. Not pretty.

genuinely hope Elon is also petty enough to just buy some game developer like Bioware, Bethesda or Obsidian at this point and stand at the entrance of the offices to just watch them walk out.
He is apparently considering buying Hasbro so there's a non-zero chance of that happening.
Thought Obsidian would've changed direction somewhat after the middling reception of The Outer Worlds but it seems that isn't the case.
Their crippling laziness got to them and they decided Outer Worlds style games were 'good enough' and 'what we are really good at'.

Avowed was originally going to be a fairly grim take on their Pillars setting, similar to Skyrim in design as a fully open world, then they decided that was too much work and rebooted development halfway through.
