Bad/mediocre anime with good openings

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Yosuga no Sora was about incest or something. It was a weird series for adolescent weaboo me to stumble across. The brother basically went around banging like the entire female cast at some point. It was based on a VN from what I remember, and it was only twelve episodes long or so. Pretty cringe, but I got a kick out of making fun of it.

The OP slaps, though. I like the strings. There's a violin background track from that show that's also burnt into my memory over a decade later.

Oh, also, Bamboo Beat is a bop. I don't remember much of the anime or manga aside from it being about a down-on-his-luck teacher who gets a bunch of girls into Kendo, though. It was one of the first anime series that I ever saw, back when Funimation just had full series on YouTube for free. It's one of those series that only I know about, it seems.

I like to think Aquarion is what Eva looks like through the eyes of those who hate it with a white-hot passion.
I'm a fan of the first OP, myself. And yeah, that sounds like a pretty apt description of Aquarion.

I think Shin Mazinger Z would fit here, very flawed mecha anime with two really good OPs. It was the first actual mecha show I decided to watch since I've been on a mecha binge as of lately. Its a shame, because The Guardian is such a good OP.

I think the show tries too hard to tell a story when it comes off as a very convoluted mess, as well as being left off on a cliffhanger ending (due to low sales, as I've read. sad no shin great mazinger). Go Nagai stuff is at its best when its being weird or batshit insane, for as good as the action and other aspects are I think the flaws of it are too glaring to not ignore and it puts a damper on my overall enjoyment of the show since it is probably the "best" mazinger related thing that isn't the old 70s mecha cartoon. Personally, I much prefer Mazinkaiser SKL.

This is more due to the visuals(and soundtrack of the actual anime) but presenting this with the premise that a political officer is unwittingly being set up as the leader of a political conspiracy turned military coup and then wasting it on a mediocre bubbly slice of life that's the author's thinly veiled fetish for cakes, sweets and different flavors of toast for all things was an absolute crime

Some wily nip included an instrumental snippet of this shit in some sorta "automario does nico nico douga mashup" 15 years ago and I still think about several of the songs I heard there to this day despite never watching any of the shows.
I remember hearing this song in a NicoNico Douga medley too.

Oh boy. Here we go.

Re:creators. remember that show? Yeah, probably not. I sat through two cours of that shit for the openings. And the meta shit. Show was terrible, but fun fuck the haters.

(OP1)

(OP2)

Bakuon!! K-On but WITH MOTORCYCLES. Show is poorly animated garbaggio (the motorcycles are autistically drawn and sound correct, which is the only other thing that matters), however I have a thing for funky bass lines.

Ginban Kaleidoscope. Holy barely-watchable shoujou (i guess some people love it). But the fucking glockenspiel/brass combo just gets me.

Overlord. Face it, it's generic isekai mcgenericsson. But man, the openings were absolutely killer.

OP3

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Kiznaiver yet as this was the swan song by Boom Boom Satellites before Michiyuki Kawashima passed away. And holy shit, the show needed to be a two-cour.

The openings for GATE make me wish that we got an actual anime about the JSDF in an fantasy setting instead of another anime about a cringe self-insert harem owner

I still come back to jam to the Air Gear OP every once in a while even years later. It had an interesting premise (youth gangs use jet powered roller blades to fight turf wars) but then it devolves into government genetic testing, mystical powers, and nonsensical betrayals. Plus MC chooses the worst girl in the end.

Saying this could get me lynched anywhere in the spanish speaking world but Saint Seiya is like the lowest baseline of mediocre shonen anime.

The intro and outro songs slap though

the funny part is that the best part of the anime was cut from the hispanic version and was replace with this garbage. This is the intro kids my generation grew up with

Even if the show is awful, you can always count on Takara to get a good OP for it:

Likewise, almost any song JAM Project sings will be good:

Misc. songs:

Besides being the same cringe-edge factor as Gantz, did this show ever have a plot.
The plot is in the original manga not so much in the anime. Hence one of the reasons why the anime was canceled.

Tanjou Debut OVA opening and ending while not as good as the others here in this thread. They do somehow time managed the test of time to be remembered and kept in online circulation all these decades. As opposed to the OVA itself where it is mostly forgotten.

The Jap intro being so good, that former Angra singer Edu covered it:

As well as a swedish metal band:

I'm aware DEEN Stay Night is hit or miss, but it does hold a special place in my heart. And the OST is great.
