Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

I mean, if it weren't for their stranglehold on communications they'd be dead to a man the moment anyone realized the level of fuckery they pull. Someone might try it ANYWAY.
The only thing the Davions and Kuritans could ever see eye to eye on: that ComStar were the biggest assholes in the Inner Sphere, even more than the other guys.
But pretty much everyone seemed to recover from the shock of seeing randos show up with stuff that would embarrass a lot of Great House military units long enough to hire them and have them go stomp someone else. Except the Kuritans and Wayne Waco maybe, but the Kuritans are nuts anyway and so's Waco.
I mean, when it comes to the WD, given the state of the IS, "Shut up and take my money!" was pretty much the order of the day when it came to any military contracting, and the fact the Dragoons had enough firepower to single-handedly turn the tide of any conflict up until the return to full-scale war that was the Fourth Succession War meant the Successor States were practically offering their daughters to them... and Candace Liao actually did try to get in Jaime's pants for her own gain. Thank God he was already married at the time.
Let's just say the Inner Sphere was doing a pretty shitty job of proving Nicholas Kerensky wrong and leave it at that.
Isn't like Nicholas was doing a good job of proving his old man's fears wrong though.
To all citizens of the Inner Sphere do I, Aleksandr Kerensky, send greetings.
Know that I have taken the remnant of the Star League Defense Force which has remained true to its purpose beyond the boundaries of the Inner Sphere, beyond the Periphery. I have done this, neither out of disappointment with those whom we leave behind, nor out of spite or disdain, as some will say. No, we have left the Inner Sphere because we love it too much to see it destroyed. In the wake of the Usurper's coup, and the long, bitter fighting that came with it, I fear that my forces would do incalculable, possibly irreparable, harm to our society. We are sworn to ward the Star League and its subjects, not destroy it.
Thus, we have left the only homes we have ever known to place the destructive capability of this armada beyond the reach of those who would use it, not for defense, but for conquest. Perhaps, with the might of our 'Mechs and ships out of reach, the leaders who now grapple with one another will relinquish their dreams of subjugating their neighbors and learn to live in peace with them.
Perhaps, one day, should mankind step back from the brink of the abyss, we, our children, or our children's children will return, to once more serve and protect and guide the Star League in mankind's quest for the stars.
Farewell.
Clans did real well with that whole "not conquering and wrecking everything in sight" bit he wished to avoid by taking the remnants of the SLDF with him. He's spinning so fast in that glass coffin of his the whole McKenna's Pride is one giant gravity deck. And it ain't easy to spin something that masses almost 2 million tons.

Something about sticking your dick in crazy goes here. Though I guess even Candace looks pretty sane next to Maximilian.

You're thinking about Romano. Candace was the sane one.

To be fair to him, its easy to get Liaos mixed up because they're all some sort of crazy. After all, Candace was crazy enough to shack up with a FedSuns spy by the name of Justin Allard and found the St. Ives Compact if that was what it took to get the hell off Sian and away from the rest of her family.

That cybernetic arm of Allard's probably had a few tricks that helped convince her.

Yeah, but literally no one outside of ComStar knew about the ComGuards until 3029, when Myndo Waterly officially "created" them.

And even then they played their cards close to their chest and didn't deploy a lot of Star League-era tech. It was only during Tukayyid that they really dusted off the fancy toys.
Yes and no.

During Hanse Davion's wedding to Melissa Steiner, Akira Brahe (the son of Yorinaga Kurita) had cottoned onto something odd about some Comstar acolytes. So he went exploring after hours and discovered where Comstar was hiding one of its Mech caches. He got ambushed by Comstar security (which evidently was recruited from mentally retarded thugs because holy shit were they stupid), who were then mugged by Yorinaga, Jaime Wolf, and Morgan Kell.

Brahe and Kurita opted to sit on the info, especially when the Fourth Succession War kicked off. They were worried Takashi Kurita would do something stupid like try to seize any Comstar Mech assets in Combine space. The LAST thing the Combine needed was to get whacked with an Interdiction while they were battling Houses Davion and Steiner. I believe that the info did make its way to Theodore Kurita who, let's be honest, was a lot sneakier than his old man and knew how to play his cards better.

IIRC ComStar was inducting a bunch of ex cons into their nascent ComGuards or ROM at the time because they lacked compunction and had no issues killing on a whim, hence the discussion on which one of them would get to murder Akira.

That's fair. Still, the final outcome is the same: the Com Guards were a very closely-guarded secret until their official announcement two years later, and the people who knew about them outside of ComStar couldn't do anything about it.

Besides, knowing that ComStar had a 'mech cache and military assets was one thing. Extrapolating that to realizing that the Com Guards had the equivalent to ~150 regiments equipped with the best gear in the Inner Sphere until the Clans arrived was a whole different kettle of fish. I don't think anyone had made that leap of logic, and Freddie S. Anastasius Focht must have raised a few eyebrows when he brought all those dudes to the tussle at Tukayyid in 3052.

Not even ex-cons, but the sort of really amoral and vicious guys who usually end their days behind bars, either via execution or general prison violence. A few dead ROM agents every so often from internal disputes was an acceptable cost to ComStar of having guys who wouldn't show any moral qualms when it came to the sorts of wetwork ROM frequently did, which is why they didn't look too hard into the circumstances of the ComStar guards getting shivved by Akira while he snuck around.

Which brings up an interesting question:

Best mercenary company and why?

I got a soft spot for Snord's Irregulars, cause their ridiculous treasure hunting hijinks are just kinda cool.

Also, on an unrelated note. I ordered the new plastic Battle Lance and Command Lance packs in November, they now hit the store and have gone out of stock, so I clearly wasn't part of the first batch. God damnit, I hope there is going to hit a second shipment soon...

Snord's Irregulars, definitely. Followed closely by the Grey Death Legion. Any merc company that flipped the bird that hard at ComStar gets my vote. Also, I like their BattleArmor.

If you like flamboyant Mercs you should have a look at Greenburg Godzillas. At first "live action documentary" then full-time Merc unit. Gave the Falcons the finger during the Jihad by mocking up their Battlemechs to look like an elite Steel Viper unit and the Falcons fell for the ruse and withdrew.

Reed's Brew. Started out as a standard merc auxiliary, branched out into beer brewing, went BACK to merc work to help pay the bills. Had some of their support vehicles refitted to supply them with beer in the field. And -- thankfully -- avoided getting turfed during the Jihad.

fml, the boxes are now available in Germany and the shop I ordered from has a large stock... but a Thunderbolt that I ordered alongside those things went out of stock and they failed to put one aside for my order, so I now need to wait until that thing is back in stock, too.

Edit: Crisis averted, the shop just took its sweet time to package all my shit together, with a bit of luck, I might have it come weekend.
