Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

The AC20 version might be a VW Beetle with a Porsche engine.

Orion is poor man's Atlas, Atlas is a big honkin' Power Wagon, so Orion = Hilux works.
Did you just call Alexandr Kerensky a poor man? That's turbo dezgra of you.
But all joking aside, I put together a lance with an Atlas and an Orion, and when they stand next to each other, it just looks perfect.
I don't know what it is about those two Mechs, but it just *fits* when they are teamed up. I wonder if adding a Cyclops and a Highlander will enhance this.

I just noticed Mechwarrior 5 is a thing.

Is it any good? Is it worth spending money on? I was pretty disappointed with the Battletech PC game, and while I can't imagine Mechwarrior being as much of a letdown, I figure I should ask.

No.

It's made by PGI, stay far the fuck away.

I'd wait for a 75-85% discount Steam sale in about... five months or so. Even if it's made by PGI and plays like MWO, for 5 bucks it'll be a good 4-hour distraction before you get bored.

I own it and regret missing the refund window. Mods are needed to make it not a crashing bore and there's no way I will bother with the DLC until/unless it is dirt cheap and the modding scene has caught up to it.

What are the biggest issues with it?

I never played MWO, and I haven't actually played ANYTHING in the Battletech universe in over a decade now (I'm going to ignore PC Battletech for purposes of this question). However, I really liked MW4 and earlier, and I spent a good chunk of my tweens and teens playing tabletop Battletech and pnp Mechwarrior. I've got brand nostalgia, but I'm not current by any means, and I'd probably be willing to play something at least as functional as a twenty year-old game, especially if there are any plans for adding VR support (are there?).

Also, am I correct in assuming there is no Clan presence in the game? I am a basic bitch who loves his Timber Wolves, but I'm happy to settle for a Warhammer if Clantech is not present.

No clantech. If my graphics card wasn’t rendering everything in potatovision I’d play more of it. It’s not a bad game so far.

Pretty much that. If you've got an itch that needs scratching badly its the only thing that can fix it. Its not bad, but could be better. I'd wait and see what dropped with the new DLC before you buy it though.

Poor optimization. RNG market system that makes little sense. Excessive reliance on procedural generation. Worst MechLab in the series to date. Awful AI. Poor implementation of numerous weapons systems. Atrocious graphics for a UE4 game at times. Shits on canon.

And the MW5 timeline precedes the Clan Invasion, so no vatbaby toys yet.

Will agree on the RNG market being an absolute disaster. Especially since it also appears to have a weird-ass progression system with the worst stuff being in Davion space and the best in Kurita territory. My biggest issue is that its hard to find the actual equipment used by the Houses in their hub areas. But while browsing Sarna to look up the new Mech variants they added with the DLC, ran into these little gems on the Rifleman page:
  • RFL-7N2 Rifleman Habeas Corpus
Named as a nod to his initial ambitions of becoming a barrister, originally a stock RFL-7N2 gifted by his uncle, Trenton Marik removed its lasers for additional armor and a larger autocannon magazine, retaining the Oriente Model O LBX 10-X autocannons and Ceres Arms Striker Light PPCs.
Kinda odd to name a BattleMech habeus corpus. "I hereby order you released. From life!"
  • RFL-3N Rifleman Sneed
The personally built 'Mech of Cranston Snord's Irregulars member "Shorty" Sneede, his Rifleman is a FrankenMech featuring a Phoenix Hawk head, Warhammer right arm and the left torso and arm from an Archer, with only the center and right torsos and both legs left from the parent design. Built around the 3N's standard 240 rated engine, much of the weapons and ammunition from the donor 'Mechs was retained, Sneede's custom being armed with a right-arm mounted PPC, left-torso mounted LRM-20 with two tons of ammo, and three Medium Lasers - one fitted to the right torso and two to the left arm. Carrying a total of fourteen single heat sinks, Sneede's patchwork Rifleman is clad in nine tons of armor.
COPE AND SNEED(E).

It's actually worse than that. I'm not going to spoil some things for anyone but suffice it to say that PGI didn't think shit out at all. There's also the hilarity of the "Rare Weapon" system in markets, where you'll see a "Rare" T3-T4 Medium Laser in a market, right next to another identical Medium Laser, except the Rare costs anywhere from 3 to 5 times as much. And you won't know that the Rare Weapon flag utterly wasted your time and a jump that cost you money until you get to the system and look at the market. You were hoping for a rare Lostech weapon? Maybe a Large Pulse Laser or a Gauss Rifle or an LB10X autocannon? Fuck you, here's a rare Flamer.
