It's not just his irrational fear of death, it's also his irrational fear of fading away into obscurity. Bob has talked many times about not wanting to be "normal," about wanting to stand out from the herd and be remembered forever. He wants to be one of the Great Men of History, someone who helped build the Superior Future, someone whose name will be spoken in reverence by generations to come.

But the reality is that he is a nobody. He's firmly in middle age with nothing to show for it. He has no relationships outside of familial ones. No wife, no kids, not even a girlfriend (and it's unlikely he ever has, or at least anything that lasted longer than one date). He has no career, at least not one that most people would consider legitimate. Sure, he has a presence thanks to the internet, but that's ephemeral at best, and his reputation is more bad than good. If he were as mature as he claims to be, he'd recognize this as something that happens to everyone, that the odds of any particular individual being especially noteworthy in a planet of eight billion are slim at best. He'd realize that his lofty dreams are likely long past and he should do what he can with the time he has left.
