Borderlands (1, 2, 3, The Pre-Sequel, TftB)

The wonderlands leak was real and they got a bunch of celebrities as the VAs
Looks mediocre but I have some minor optimism because the Calypso twins were so bad it would be somewhat difficult to write even worse villains without considerable effort.

Tried going back to playing 2 on the Xbox after playing it on Switch with the motion controls and it was a non starter

Im starting to notice a patern here with these DLCs....Getting some "Force Awakens"-"Jurassic World" vibes...is it just me?

I don't know why you're expecting originality from Gearbox considering the dumpster fire that was BL3.

Can someone summarize why the story in BL3 was bad (I haven't played it yet)? The overall consensus is that it was bad, but can someone just give the finer points on what was bad about it.

Google Calypso twins and watch the first few YouTube videos that pop up. You'll get it pretty quick.

The dialogue sounded like pre-pubescent version of Handsome Jack.

Now that I think of it, I could see Zer0 turning evil and being a better boss than what was in BL3 (which to me seems like it was just an attempt to rehash Handsome Jack)- his mysterious personality and haiku quips would make for an interesting villain)

- The BL3 heroes aren't important
- The BL2 heroes aren't important and mostly aren't in the game at all. The one that is included gets done incredibly dirty.
- There's another, more insufferable, child NPC that's forced into the story.
- The antagonists are awful.
- It goes on forever
- There are several times where the script just goes "hey the bad guys win with no fight and do a thing unopposed while you watch"
- I'm not joking in saying that Penn and Teller's cameo (which is a joke in and of itself) has more story importance than some of the BL2 cast.
- You spend more time with Hammerlock (who is Gay, now, btw, prepare to hear that a million times).
- The ending is unbelievably bad and I still laugh about it when I think about it.

This is on top of (non story)
- The game isn't remarkably interesting from a gameplay standpoint - there's not much in the way of major innovation from BL2/TPS in terms of mechanics. It felt (to me, at least) another spinoff or "big" DLC to BL2/TPS. The "major" changes are vaulting and sliding, more "active" skills.
- The game still has all of the same "rough areas" in terms of player power and scaling that BL1/2/TPS did, which is less charming after a decade.
- The game (might be different now with patches) was also pretty buggy on release, there were a decent amount of hitbox issues around crouching and cover.
- Gearbox having the gigantic pair of balls to release a $120 version.
- Gearbox pulling support from the Steam version in order to go Epic Exclusive for a period of 6 months.

They tried to do the Handsome Jack thing but split him up into two characters and ramped up the obnoxious level. You also have a story that hinges on The Force problem with Star Wars of people using what was a mysterious mechanic as a way to write themselves out of a corner. The Vault Hunter in this game is just a grunt that does the leg work of characters that stand around whining about their problems and bitching at each other.

It's something I don't remember thinking so much in 2 but many times in 3 I thought "your character doesn't mean dick in this game."

Also don't remember Lilith being the most important character in the Borderlands universe. I liked Lilith in 1 and 2, as much as you can like a Borderlands "character" anyway, but the pedestal they put her on in 3 is ridiculous. Remember when Lilith was kidnapped and you killed the warrior and stopped Handsome Jack to rescue her? Well that must have been a fever dream because Lilith got all the credit. I had a very low bar for Borderlands "storytelling" and hearing issues with 3 lowered that bar even more and they still managed to limbo underneath with ease.

Lilith's role is more of a BL2 thing she took over where Roland left off after he got killed by Handsome Jack considering they're still doing this corny Crimson Raiders thing. As for storytelling in general people look at BL2 as the best story but as a person who has played nearly all the games and the dlc (except TFTB) BL2 has a solid story but it's not a masterpiece. I like it because at least gives the player character some slot to fit into as you are directly involved with the "good" guys and they even help you do things during certain quests it makes the VH feel more like part of the narrative and less than a gameplay element you play as.

The irony in BL3 is that the VH runs their mouths the most they played around with this in The Pre-sequel but it's still has the same issue as Pre-sequel where it's just little quips the player character says and NPCs react with a neutral response.

I've actually been debating whether or not to get this cheap and after reading this I'm gonna give it a miss. Thanks for this incredibly informative post man.

"Cheap"

B3 is a lot of things but cheap (even on sale) aint one of them. Its cheap maybe if you want to get the bare bones game but Gearbox has cut up so much of this game its psychotic.

TWO season passes! And for stuff that should have been in the main game! Like, legit, they aparently witheld on an skill tree for each VH in 3 so they can be added later on as DLC...what a fucking greedy move! I mean, how else will Randy's third beach house get paid? Dont even get me started on how this skill tree fiasco seems to be their excuse to not add new VHs...despite 2 and TPS having 6 each! 3? Just 4 and I think we should be glad they didnt held one for ransom so we would only get 3 and get the last one through DLC.

Gearbox is pathetically and shamelessly greedy with B3. We get LESS content that we got previous two games and we gotta pay even more! Its no wonder people prefer pirating this game ! Because Gearbox legit doesnt deserve it.

Dont even get me started on the insane price they gave Tales from the borderlands, that shit was gone for a while and people thought they would be able to finally properly enjoy it now that its back but oops! It has an absurd price compared to other Telltale titles...Gearbox just feels really desperated for cash so they are over pricing the Borderlands brand for all its worth AND beyond that.

I legit wonder how Randy can keep his position after all of these stunts. You would think that he would get kicked out because of the bad PR alone, let alone the lawsuits and charges against him.
Because he knows his audience and as far as "being a scumbag" goes - he's brilliant at it.

People bitch and moan all day about the $120 "LIMITED TIME ONLY SUPER DEULUXE VERSION" but it probably sold like fucking hotcakes.
The players bitched about the Epic exclusivity, but that was a free $115,000,000 dollars for Gearbox which let them sell the game again 6 months later and was a clever loophole to not pay out a whole bunch of performance/sales bonuses.
Releasing a DLC pass that wasn't included in the $120 version? Brilliant!

Randy is clearly a grimy dude, but sometimes to be a business leader you have to be a grimy dude. He leveraged Borderlands 3 a whole lot and made a gigantic pile of money for it, which the shareholders love to no end. The only "time will tell" thing will be is if all of this bad taste around BL3 will affect future Borderlands projects (BL4, whatever the other spinoff is) but honestly? Probably not. "Gamers" have a pretty short memory for this stuff and if BL4 looks good, it will sell well.

The only thing Gearbox's parent company/board of directors is wondering is how they can promote Randy to something even higher than CEO/President and how fast can they do it.

Yeah, you are right...At this point Randy can legit kill someone and violate the body on camera and he will still get to keep his job with only maybe a Twitter post about how he is sorry and "muh mental health".

General "Gamers" are seen as the biggest idiots on the planet and are the main reason why you see games like Cyberpunk 2077 releaseing and getting the reputation it has gotten despite the feverish attempts to make the game actually work on everything it promised. BL4 could be another exclusive and it would still sell thanks to now they know their dlc tactic is actually working on people.
